Pediculosis, or the affliction of head lice, results from tiny, wingless bugs of 2 - 3mm , in length, with flat, elongated bodies infesting the scalp hair of a human victim. The lice have six legs with tiny claws and live only on human scalps. They can range in colour from light brown to grey. Contrary to popular conception , head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness. Anyone can get head lice under the right conditions, but they are most commonly found in primary school aged children. Lice can infest anyone: young, old, rich, poor, clean or dirty. Lice like to lay their eggs, or nits, behind the ears, on the back of the head above the neck, and on the top of the head. Adult lice may be found anywhere on the head. There are several ways you can know the tiny specks on your head are nits:-
  • Nits are hard to remove from your hair, and they feel like little grains of sand.

Treatment of Pediculosis Capitis (Head Lice)
by Mark B. Levin, M.D.

This is the twentieth article in a series written for Princeton Online . Click here for an archive of other articles Now that school has begun, children will be sharing their ideas, their pencils, their germs and their head lice. We hope sharing of these last two items is minimal during the year, but in case you encounter head lice, the following outline provides useful information for treatment. A. Background:
1.Humans are the only host for this infestation.
    2. Head lice are different from scabies and from pubic lice.
    3. The time from egg to egg-laying adult is about one week.
    4. The eggs (nits) are laid glued to the base of a hair shaft, typically around the back of the head first, but spreading to the top and front as the infestation increases.
    5. Although a source of social disruption, head lice cause no human disease.
    6. Head lice have existed for as long as civilization has been around (maybe longer). We know of a professional nit-picker in Brooklyn, although we cannot vouch for her effectiveness. Folk treatments include slathering shortening (butter or lard) into the hair, leaving it on for one to three days, then washing it out (I am not sure how to get it all out!).

87. Pediculosis (Lice)
pediculosis. General Characteristics. Lice are wingless parasitic insects thatfeed on blood and infest the hairy parts of the human body.
http://www.purdue.edu/rem/eh/pedicul.htm
General Characteristics: This picture represents adult head lice, male and female, and their nits, or eggs. The nits are attached to a human hair. The picture is of course substantially enlarged compared to the real organisms, which are described as being "the size of a sesame seed" in some publications. Pubic lice are somewhat smaller. Control and Prevention:
  • Head lice (2-3mm with a flat elongated body) are spread by the communal use of combs, brushes, hats, or personal contact. Control is achieved by washing the hair with a shampoo that contains a pesticide. There are many brands of lice control shampoos that can be obtained over the counter at most pharmacies. Combs, brushes, clothing, and bedding should be washed in hot water and dried normally. Pubic lice (1.5 to 2mm with a crab like body) are usually spread by sexual contact but crowding clothing together in lockers or dorms cannot be discounted. Control is achieved by washing the infested hair with a shampoo that contains a pesticide. Clothing and bedding should be washed in hot water and dried normally. Body lice (similar to Head lice but more robust) are spread by the sharing of unwashed clothing and in overcrowded living conditions. Control is achieved by washing the body with a shampoo or soap that contains a pesticide. Clothing and bedding should be washed in hot water and dried normally.

    Pediculosis.
Synonyms Definition lousiness There are three varieties of this parasite that are found in man, each selecting its own field of operation, and rarely invading any other territory, and that only by accident and is temporary. The pediculus capitis, or head louse, having for its field of operation the region of the scalp. The pediculus corporis, or body louse, has a larger field of operation and is on the general body surface, while the pediculus pubis has for its habitat the pubic region, though it may be found on other parts where the hairs are short and stiff, as the axillae, the eyebrows, the eyelashes, and the stiff hair of the breast. Pediculus Capitis The ova, or nits, are minute, dirty-white, pear-shaped bodies, glued to the hair by chitinous substance. They hatch out in from six to eight days, and are sexually mature in from twelve to sixteen days. The female lays from fifty to sixty eggs in a week, or, according to Kaposi, a progeny of five thousand can be reared in eight weeks from a single female. According to Crocker, the color, while generally gray, varies according to the color of its host, being gray with blackish margins on Europeans, white on the Esquimaux, black on the Negro, and yellowish-brown on the Chinese. Etiology Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment Pediculus Corporis This parasite inhabits the clothes, the seams being their hiding-place, as well as their breeding-grounds, though sometimes the ova may be found on the lanugo hairs. It thrives better in impoverished subjects, alcoholics, tramps, and the unwashed class. It is found more frequently in adults than in children.

Figure 1. A 14-year-old girl and her 6-year-old sister presented with pruritus in the postauricular area. Multiple small, white capsules were found firmly attached to their hair. Examination of the hair under a light microscope at a magnification of 100 showed unhatched, tulip-shaped eggs, or nits, on the hair shaft (Panel A). The patients were infested with Pediculus humanus subspecies capitis, or head lice, blood-sucking ectoparasites of the order Anoplura. A female head louse (Panel B) is about 4 mm in length and remains confined to the scalp, attached to the hair shaft with its pincer-like claws (arrow).

Although these conditions typically cause severe itching, they generally are benign. Pediculosis and scabies have similar treatments. Pediculosis The three lice species that infest humans are Pediculus humanus capitishead louse (Figure 1, left), Phthirus pubiscrab or pubic louse (Figure 1, right), and Pediculus humanus corpusbody louse. All three insects are obligate human parasites. Contrary to popular belief, these insects do not hop, jump, or fly. Rather, they are transmitted by person-to-person contact.
