Pediculosis (Body) Lice
What is pediculosis?
Pediculosis is an infestation of lice. Body lice infestations occur primarily on clothing, especially along the seams of inner surfaces and the adjacent area of the skin. Pubic/crab lice infest hairy parts of the body including the groin, eyebrows, eyelashes and facial hair. Both body lice and pubic/crab lice feed on human blood and can cause severe local itching. Who gets pediculosis? Anyone can become infested with body lice or pubic/crab lice, regardless of age, sex, race, or standards of personal hygiene. Body lice infestation are usually found in people living in crowded, unsanitary conditions where clothing is infrequently changed or laundered. Pubic/crab lice infestations are mainly found among sexually active individuals. How are body lice and pubic/crab lice spread?

Pediculosis (Head Lice)
What is pediculosis (head lice)? Pediculosis is an infestation of head lice on the hair of the head. The lice feed on human blood which can cause severe local itching. Who gets pediculosis? Anyone may become infested with head lice, regardless of age, sex, race, or standards of personal hygiene. Head lice are frequently found in schools and day care centers, and are easily spread from person-to-person. How are head lice spread? Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact with an infested person or indirect contact with lice-carrying objects such as combs, brushes, hats or scarves. Since nits (louse eggs) must be laid by adult lice, the chances of nits being spread from person-to-person are minimal. Do animals spread head lice?

Pediculosis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pediculosis is an infestation of lice which are parasitic insects on the bodies of humans. The condition is more commonly known as head lice body lice or pubic lice Head lice Pediculus capitis ) infestation is most frequent on children aged 3-10 and their families. Females get head lice more often than males, and in the United States African-Americans have head lice less often. The reasons for these two facts are not known. Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact with an infested person. Body lice are spread through direct contact with the body, clothing or other personal items of a person already carrying lice. Pubic lice are most often spread by intimate contact with an infested person. Head lice occur on the head hair, body lice on the clothing, and pubic lice mainly on the hair near the groin. Human lice do not occur on pets or other animals. Lice do not have wings and cannot jump. From each egg or "nit" may hatch one nymph that will grow and develop to the adult louse. Full-grown lice are about the size of a sesame seed. Lice feed on blood once or more often each day by piercing the skin with their tiny needle-like mouthparts. Lice cannot burrow into the skin.

Lice, crabs or Cooties
  • This is an infestation of tiny, parasitic insects (singular louse) that attack the skin of the scalp, trunk, and pubic areas. Lice infestation is transmitted person-to-person and via intimate objects that tend to be shared (brushes, combs, towels, hats, etc.). Lice are 3-4 mm long, making them barely visible to the naked eye. Body lice are usually found in the seams of underclothing, and generally go to the body only to feed. Hair and pubic lice are located in these areas.

Clinical Manifestations
An infestation of head hair, the hairy parts of the body, or clothing, with adult lice, nymphs, or nits (eggs). Pubic, or "crab" lice, usually infest the pubic area, eyelashes, or armpits; Head lice infest the scalp. Body lice infest the body and can be identified clinging to the seams of clothing. The head louse is a wingless insect 2mm in length. The parasite lives close to the scalp, and is dependent upon human blood to exist. Lice can only survive up to two days, but usually only a few hours, away from the scalp. The main symptom is itching. Transmission occurs by direct contact with a person with a live infestation, or direct contact with their personal belongings that are harboring lice.
Incubation Period
Optimally, eggs hatch in a week, and the resultant lice are capable of multiplying in 8-10 days. The typical adult louse lives 20-30 days, laying 4-5 eggs a day.
Period of Communicability
As long as live lice remain on an infested person and/or eggs (nits) in hair are within a ¼" from the scalp.
