Frequently Asked Questions About Scabies W
hat is the most common symptom of scabies?
The most typical symptom of scabies is intense itching, particularly at night. Scabies and its associated itching occur most often between the folds of the skin, such as at the wrists and elbows, between the fingers, and in the general area of the navel and beltline. Infants and children sometimes get scabies on the head and scalp, or on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet.
How do you get scabies?
Scabies is mainly transmitted from one person to another through close contact with an infested person, or by sharing his or her personal articles, such as clothing or bed linen. If you think you may have been exposed, or if you experience intense itching, consult your physician.
Can you get scabies from pets?

GENERAL APPROACH TO DEALING WITH HEAD LICE
Because of their high mobility, head lice are most sensibly dealt with at the level of the individual and of the community simultaneously, when the treatments reinforce one another in terms of eradication and prevention of re-infestation. The activities of detection, treatment and prevention are today shared in differing degrees between public health authorities and individuals.
It is acknowledged that early detection is crucial to the treatment of infection by head lice, as only early treatment can contain it.
TREATMENT OF HEAD LICE
The objective in treating a case of head louse infestation must be to free the host of eggs, nymphs and lice, as well as of nits or empty shells, for the continued presence of the latter can only serve to confuse later diagnosis. Further requirements are that the treatment be easy to carry out, be inexpensive, and that side-effects be kept to a minimum.
Early treatments for head lice were mostly manual, and involved clipping the hair short and removing lice, eggs and nits or empty egg-shells with fine tooth combs. Earlier chemical means achieved suffocation of lice and eggs with various oils, fats and greases. Combinations of vinegar, kerosene, oils, shampooing and combing have been employed.

P ediculosis and scabies are closely related skin conditions caused by arthropods. Although these conditions typically cause severe itching, they generally are benign. Pediculosis and scabies have similar treatments. Pediculosis The three lice species that infest humans are Pediculus humanus capitis head louse (Figure 1, left), Phthirus pubis crab or pubic louse (Figure 1, right), and Pediculus humanus corpus body louse. All three insects are obligate human parasites. Contrary to popular belief, these insects do not hop, jump, or fly. Rather, they are transmitted by person-to-person contact.

What are body lice?
Body lice are parasitic insects that live on the body and in the clothing or bedding of infested humans. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races. Body lice infestations spread rapidly under crowded conditions where hygiene is poor and there is frequent contact among people. Are body lice infestations common in the United States? Body lice are found only in homeless, transient populations who don't have access to changes of clothes or bath. Infestation is unlikely to persist on anyone who bathes regularly and who regularly has access to freshly laundered clothing and bedding.
Where are body lice found?
Body lice are found on the body and on clothing or bedding used by infested people; lice eggs are lain in the seams of clothing or on bedding. Occasionally eggs are attached to body hair. Lice found on the hair and head are not body lice; they are head lice.
