Pectus excavatum or "sunken chest" is an anterior chest wall deformity that occurs in one out of 1,000 children. Boys are born with this deformity more often than girls (ie, four to one). (1) The deformity becomes noticeably worse with each growth spurt but usually reaches its maximum depression by the mid-teenage years. Ideally, it is easier to correct pectus excavatum before the child reaches puberty because the rib and cartilage structures are more malleable. Surgical intervention is best performed before the age of 14, but it has been performed successfully on older children and adults (ie, people 17 to 30 years of age). (2)

Pectus excavatum is a condition in which the "breast bone" (sternum) appears sunken and the chest concave. It is sometimes called "funnel chest". The majority of these cases are not associated with any other condition (isolated findings). However, some syndromes include pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum repair
Definition
Surgery to correct pectus excavatum , a deformity of the front of the chest wall with depressed breastbone (sternum) and ribs.
Alternative Names
Funnel chest repair; Chest deformity repair
Description
There are various surgical approaches for treating this condition. In the most commonly used approach, while the child is deep asleep and pain-free (using general anesthesia), an incision is made over the sternum. The deformed cartilages are removed and the rib lining is left in place to allow the cartilages to regrow. An incision is made in the sternum and it is repositioned. A rib or metal strut may be used to stabilize the sternum in normal position until healing occurs in 3 to 6 months. A temporary chest tube may be placed to reexpand the lung if the lining of the lung is entered. Metal struts are removed 6 months later through a small skin incision under the arm. This procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis. Most repairs are done between 18 months and 5 years of age, although there has been debate about the best age for the procedure. A newer, less invasive approach involves the placement of a curved steel bar beneath the sternum to elevate the deformed sternum and cartilages without removal of any bone or cartilage. The bar is later removed, after two to four years. There are advantages and disadvantages compared to the more invasive approaches, and long-term results with this approach are not yet available.

Swimmer Puppies (Pectus Excavatum) INTRODUCTION After being present at the birth of thousands of puppies, there are certain observations made, one is the syndrome of swimmer puppies (pectus excavatum). This is a condition of 'so called' flat chested puppies. They usually die anywhere from two days to four weeks of age. More often, sooner than later. DESCRIPTION A swimmer puppy moves about with both front legs out to the side of the chest, in a paddling motion. They appear to be swimming when they move, hence the name "swimmer puppy". The hind legs trail out behind with little or no movement. The description of the puppy is flat chested, flat abdomen, the front legs become warped, moving outward and upward, the hind legs become splayed. When nursing, the puppy usually arches its back extremely in a backward movement. They do not flex at the neck anymore. PAST THEORY Genetics: that the puppy inherited the problem from the parents and that if you had a bitch that produced a swimmer puppy, she should be removed from your breeding program.

Pectus Excavatum What is Pectus Excavatum?
    Pectus Excavatum
, or funnel chest, is a deformity that occurs in approximately 1 in 500 to 1,000 children, and is often referred to as "sunken" or "funnel" chest. In this condition, the lower half of the breastbone, or sternum, and the cartilages become deformed, creating a depression in the chest. The depression can be in the center of the chest, or off to one side. It can be mild or deep. It often is mild or does not exist in very young children, and develops or deepens with growth.
The deformity is not purely cosmetic. When moderate or severe it can cause abnormalities of the heart or lungs. It can lead to serious problems with breathing. It can cause difficulty during exercise due to an inability to get enough oxygen into the body. It can cause the individual to tire easily. It can cause asthma, or an increase in infections of the lungs. In approximately 15% of people scoliosis is present. Spontaneous improvement does not occur. Minimally Invasive Procedure
The deformity may be surgically corrected with a minimally invasive procedure. Traditional surgery for Pectus Excavatum involves dividing the breastbone and the ribs or connecting cartilages. It can be painful, and may leave a very large scar on the chest. Minimally invasive surgery results in less blood loss compared to the traditional or standard surgery. A minimally invasive procedure has been developed to reduce many of these complications. This procedure involves inserting a small scope into the chest. A metal bar, which has been prebent to the desired corrective position, is then inserted across the chest. No bone or cartilage is cut. Three small
