The Downside: Problem and Pathological Gambling
Edited by Jeffrey J. Marotta, Judy A. Cornelius, and William R. Eadington Gambling over the past thirty years has dramatically increased in availability, acceptance, legitimization, and legalization throughout the world. Accompanying this growth has been an increase in the incidence and visibility of destructive gambling behavior the downside. Well-known researchers and academics from around the world have contributed articles on the topic of problem and pathological gambling for this publication. They range from the philosophic, such as Steven Graybar and Duane Varble's perspective on pathological gamblers and pathological warriors, to the pragmatic, such as Lynn Wallisch's article on Texas before and after the State lottery and her observations on the under-served Hispanic population. The articles are informative and instructive. Order Information You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see the Order Form. Click on the link below to download it.

Pathological Gambling : Etiology, Comorbidity, and Treatment "Nancy M. Petry, PhD" November 2004
Hardcover
384 Pages
Pathological Gambling: Etiology, Comorbidity, and Treatment examines the prevalence and consequences of problem gambling as well as approaches to treatment. In this comprehensive book, Petry clarifies the current understanding of gambling as a disorder, including its levels of intensity; possible origins in biological, neurological, developmental, and environmental spheres; and special issues surrounding populations that seem to be more susceptible to problem gambling, including youth, ethnic minorities, and those with comorbid affective disorders such as depression. The author reviews treatments commonly used for pathological gambling as well as nonprofessionally guided interventions such as Gamblers Anonymous. Petry then presents her own brief cognitive-behavioral approach, whose success is empirically proven in the largest known study of psychosocial treatments of problem gamblers. This book represents a review of everything currently known about problem gambling as well as promising treatment approaches, making it an invaluable, comprehensive resource for both therapists and researchers in the field of pathological gambling.

Pathological Gambling Should be Viewed as Chronic Medical Condition, Say Yale Researchers
New Haven, Conn. - Like drug and alcohol abuse, pathological gambling should be viewed as a chronic medical condition, Yale researchers assert in an article published in the July 11 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) "Pathological gambling should be conceptualized as a chronic medical illness so that we can gain better understanding of the biological, genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the problem, develop better treatment strategies and treat individuals with the disorder within a medical context," said principal investigator, Marc Potenza, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale. Potenza, who is also director of the Problem Gambling Clinic and the Women and Addictive Disorders Core of Women's Health Research at Yale, said that as a nation, America has seen a robust increase in gambling. Studies show that with the rapid increase and availability of legalized gambling, there are a growing number of problem and pathological gamblers. In 1998, 86 percent of the general adult population was estimated to have gambled at some time in their lives, up from 68 percent in 1975. Traditional forms of gambling include wagering in casinos or on lotteries or horse racing. Potenza said new gambling forms, such as video poker and Internet gambling, may be more habit-forming than traditional gambling, given their greater rapidity of action and ability to be used in isolation.

This protocol will look to measure differences in the acoustic startle response of pathological gamblers as compared to non-gambling controls. The acoustic startle response, as measured by the pre-pulse inhibition task may serve as an objective measure of dopaminergic tone and functioning. Characterizing the effect of context on a measure of impulsivity among pathological gamblers (May 2003 - Current)
This protocol will characterize the effect of the environmental setting on decision-making. Pathological gamblers will be administered a behavioral task, called delay discounting, that can measure one aspect of impulsive decision making. This task will be given in a laboratory setting and then a casino setting to demonstrate the impact of the context of decision making.

Study finds more than 5 million pathological or problem gamblers
    March 18, 1999

Web posted at: 12:18 a.m. EST (0518 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) More than 20 million Americans have or could develop gambling problems, but the economic impact of that is "relatively small," concludes a study likely to further enflame the debate over legalized wagering. The survey conducted for the National Gambling Impact Study Commission found that more than 5 million Americans are pathological or problem gamblers and an additional 15 million are at risk. A second report, also released Thursday as the commission began two days of meetings in Washington, estimated that 1.8 million American adults as well as up to 1.1 million American adolescents age 12 through 17 engage in severe "pathological" gambling each year. The commission has three months to finish a wide-ranging report on gambling for Congress, and the extent of compulsive gambling in the country is just one of several open issues. Yet gambling addiction is the most contentious topic, and the report on the survey conducted for the commission only widened the chasm between the two sides.
