The functions include basic and operational research, training and supervision of health staff and implementing, monitoring and evaluating disease control programs. CNM co-ordinates four main programmes; malaria, dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), filariasis and schistosomiasis and intestinal parasitic infections.
Major projects currently implemented include partnership with WHO, World Bank, European Commission, USAID, JICA, IFRC and a host of national and international NGOs in addition to Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Education, etc.

Introduction
Plasmodium falciparum , the organism responsible for the most lethal form of malaria. New therapeutic agents are therefore urgently needed.
Ongoing Research and Objectives
(See also: DMID's Malaria Research Program DMID-supported research is targeted at developing more effective prevention approaches, diagnostics and treatments for tropical infectious diseases and parasitic infections. Major areas of the Division's Parasitic Diseases Research Program include:
Diagnosis : New technologies are being applied to develop cost effective, sensitive and specific diagnostics, applicable to field situations in the tropics, to test for disease pathology, infectious agents, and response to drugs and vaccines. Such tests allow for determination of disease epidemiology as well as for identifying the risk of disease. Improved diagnostics are also being developed for detecting drug resistant pathogens to improve treatment regimens and to inform national and regional control policies. Drug Discovery and Development : Basic biochemical and molecular studies are being carried out to identify enzymes, metabolic pathways and structures in pathogens that are targets for intervention. Funding of genome initiatives and databases has also expanded the number of chemotherapeutic and vaccine targets. Studies are also conducted to determine the mode of action of existing drugs and the mechanisms of drug resistance. Further development requires studies in animal models and in field and clinic settings to assess efficacy and safety.

Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) May 13, 2005 Sponsored by: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose This protocol offers diagnosis and standard medical treatment for various parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Gastrointestinal parasites are either worms (helminths) or one-celled animals called protozoans which live in the human intestines. Often, parasitic infections do not cause illness. In these cases, drug treatment is not indicated, because treatment can have adverse side effects. Patients will be examined for their immune responses, correlation between the number of parasites and disease, and other studies. Individuals with known or suspected parasitic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including amebiasis, giardiasis, hookworm, strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, pinworm, tapeworm, trichinosis, clonorchis, opisthorchis, coccidiosis, paragonimiasis, and echinococcus may be eligible for this study. Patient evaluations may include blood and urine tests, stool examination, X-rays, ultrasound studies and, uncommonly, duodenal aspiration for examination of fluid from the duodenum (first part of the small intestine). Other tests may be required, depending on the parasite and disease. Direct examination of the tissues of the intestines may be required to rule out certain infections.
