But convincing customers who've been scared silly by doomsday reports is a whole different matter. Many companies are reacting to such concerns. Others, from banks to utilities, have launched offensives to see just how alarmed their customers are and to reassure them that it will be all systems go next New Year's Day. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, for instance, is surveying customers to determine if they're "ill-informed" or "panicked" about year 2000, said John Burns, a vice president at the Toronto bank. The bank wants to figure out if depositors plan to withdraw significant portions of their savings toward year's end so it can decide how much cash to stock in its automated teller machines during the latter part of December.

The pregnancy panic attack
What don't moms-to-be have to worry about these days?
Kim Carney / MSNBC.com
Victoria Clayton MSNBC contributor Victoria Clayton document.write('') E-mail document.write(''); A few years ago when I was blissfully naive about such things as the one-hour post-glucose check or a Britax car seat, I also was clueless about the level of anxiety lurking in the hearts and minds of pregnant women. Of course, it only took two little pink lines on the home pregnancy test and, like magic, I'd joined the sisterhood. That is, Our Sisters of the Anxious Pregnancy.
Check out any pregnancy chat room and you'll immediately get what I'm talking about. Moms-to-be - including me when I was expecting - seem to worry about everything. And how can they help it? Impetus for anxiety abounds. I couldn't walk into my doctor's office and pick up a magazine without reading the bad news that awaited my unborn child and me. Words like "ectopic pregnancy," "blighted ovum," "gestational diabetes" and, of course, the most dreaded word of all "miscarriage" popped out at me from magazines. Amniocentesis had barely entered my vocabulary before I was informed by a (well-meaning, I'm sure) woman about the hazards of having one - no, not the fear of that long needle that everyone else talks about; she was referring to the risk of miscarriage due to having an invasive test. (The risk, I was later informed by my doctor, is less than minuscule. There's something like a .03 percent chance that anything negative could happen.)

P ANIC D ISORDER IN C HILDREN AND A DOLESCENTS No. 50 Panic disorder is a common and treatable disorder. Children and adolescents with panic disorder have unexpected and repeated periods of intense fear or discomfort, along with other symptoms such as a racing heartbeat or feeling short of breath. These periods are called "panic attacks" and last minutes to hours. Panic attacks frequently develop without warning. Symptoms of a panic attack include:
  • Intense fearfulness (a sense that something terrible is happening)
  • Racing or pounding heartbeat
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Shortness of breath or a feeling of being smothered
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Sense of unreality
  • Fear of dying, losing control, or losing your mind
More than 3 million Americans will experience panic disorder during their lifetime. Panic disorder often begins during adolescence, although it may start during childhood, and sometimes runs in families. If not recognized and treated, panic disorder and its complications can be devastating. Panic attacks can interfere with a child's or adolescent's relationships, schoolwork, and normal development. Children and adolescents with panic disorder may begin to feel anxious most of the time, even when they are not having panic attacks. Some begin to avoid situations where they fear a panic attack may occur, or situations where help may not be available. For example, a child may be reluctant to go to school or be separated from his or her parents. In severe cases, the child or adolescent may be afraid to leave home. This pattern of avoiding certain places or situations is called "agoraphobia." Some children and adolescents with panic disorder can develop severe depression and may be at risk of suicidal behavior. As an attempt to decrease anxiety, some adolescents with panic disorder will use alcohol or drugs.

70. NAMI PRESENTATION
Dr. Michael Menaster, a San Francisco psychiatrist, on panic disorder ; symptoms, possible causes and treatments.
http://www.geocities.com/menaster/panic.html
PANIC DISORDER
Michael Menaster, MD Jane Doe is a healthy woman who has never suffered from a mental illness. One day, she suddenly experiences episodes of shortness of breath, sweating, chest pain, dizziness, nausea, and stomach pain. Fearful that she's having a heart attack, Jane goes to the emergency room. The physician evaluates Jane, reassures her that she's healthy and that "nothing is wrong," and sends her home. Nevertheless, episodes of these symptoms continue and become more and more frequent. Jane even becomes afraid to leave her house out of a fear of having another attack. Finally, Jane sees a mental health professional and receives psychotherapy and medications that resolve these symptoms. Jane suffers from panic disorder, a condition of recurring anxiety attacks that affect one out of ten people. An anxiety attack, also known as a panic attack, involves four of the following symptoms simultaneously: sweating; shaking; shortness of breath; feelings of choking; chest pain; nausea or stomach upset; dizziness or fainting; feeling that oneself or reality is not real (derealization or depersonalization); a fear of dying; a fear of losing control; numbness or tingling in the arms or legs; chills or hot flushes (DSM IV, American Psychiatric Association Press, Washington, DC, 1994). Non-psychiatric conditions, such as alcohol consumptions, thyroid disorders, and diabetes, can cause panic attacks. Heavy exercise, caffeine, tobacco, and hyperventilation can also bring about panic attacks. Absent physical factors that cause panic attacks and without another psychiatric condition such as depression, the diagnosis of panic disorder can be made.

SANTA PANIC
Ho Ho Holy Smokes , boys and girls! Christmas sure is a busy time for your pal Santa. All the toys to make and reindeer to feed. Why, I'd lose my head if it weren't screwed on tight. Come to think of it ... oh, Jiminey Christmas! Of all the days to misplace my noggin! Where'd that ol' melon git off to? I can't very well drive the sled without my head! How am I going to call out orders to the reindeer? Hand signals? How can I eat all your yummy milk and cookies? I don't imagine many of your mommies and daddies have a spare IV drip laying around the house. Gosh almighty boys and girls, I sure am in a pickle. Can you help me? Can you, huh? How to help return Santa's head back to his sleigh: Keys:
Left Arrow: Move left
Right Arrow: Move right
Up Arrow: Jump
Spacebar: Shoot Move up the ramps, being careful to avoid the pack of Easter Egg hitmen sent to rub Santa out. If you bump into one, it's back to the bottom for you (fortunately, Santa can't be killed). Each head has four projectiles located in Santa's nose that can be shot at the eggs with your spacebar; removing them from your path. The up arrow also allows you to avoid the eggs, by leaping over them. To move up to the next ramp, simply go to the end of the previous ramp and switch directions. The finish line is directly under Santa's sleigh on the top ramp. Whereupon his head will magically leap up to its rightful location and Christmas will be saved.

Anxiety is a normal experience. Moderate or high levels of anxiety can increase alertness and performance in particular situations. However, people who experience continuous or recurring fears, or episodes of intense fear can feel powerless to manage their symptoms and their lives can become severely restricted. Anxiety Disorders affect at least 12% of Australians at some time in their lives. The increasing demands and stress of everyday life means that anxiety has become a problem in our society. All indications are that stress related mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders and depression, will represent a growing area of need in Mental Health resources within the next few years. The five major anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety (sometimes referred to as Social Phobia), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other types of disorders are Specific Phobia and Separation Anxiety.
