Introduction to Scott's Plantar Fasciitis Booklet
Plantar fasciitis (pronounced PLAN-tar fashee-EYE-tiss) is an inflammation of the plantar fascia. "Plantar" means the bottom of the foot, "fascia" is a type of connective tissue, and "itis" means "inflammation". Heel spurs are soft, bendable deposits of calcium that are the result of tension and inflammation in the plantar fascia attachment to the heel. Heel spurs do not cause pain. They are only evidence (not proof) that a patient may have plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia encapsulates muscles in the sole of the foot. It supports the arch of the foot by acting as a bowstring to connect the ball of the foot to the heel. When walking and at the moment the heel of the trailing leg begins to lift off the ground, the plantar fascia endures tension that is approximately two times body weight. This moment of maximum tension is increased and "sharpened" (it increases suddenly) if there is lack of flexibility in the calf muscles. A percentage increase in body weight causes the same percentage increase in tension in the fascia. Due to the repetitive nature of walking, plantar fasciitis may be a repetitive stress disorder (RSD) similar to tennis elbow. Both conditions benefit greatly from

Back pain
Back pain is an extremely common complaint –an estimated 60 to 80% of people in the UK are affected at some time in their lives. It’s also one of the main reasons for sickness absence. Each year, close to 120 million working days are lost due to back pain.
Acute and chronic back pain
Back pain can strike anyone at any age, although studies show people are most vulnerable between the ages of 45 and 59. If the pain lasts for less than three months, it is called acute back pain, where acute refers to the duration rather than the severity of the symptoms. If the problem goes on for longer, this is known as chronic back pain.
How the back works
The spine is made up of many small bones called vertebrae. These are separated by discs, which allow the spine to bend (see illustration below). This structure of vertebrae and discs is supported along its length by muscles and ligaments. The spinal cord threads through the centre of each vertebra, carrying nerves from the brain to the rest of the body.

Anterior Hip Pain
JOHN W. O'KANE, M.D.
University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington
A nterior hip pain is a common problem that is frequently difficult to diagnose and treat. Determining the exact cause of hip pain can be difficult for several reasons. The multiple structures in the hip have the potential to produce similar pain syndromes; in addition, pain in the hip region may come from deep structures that are not palpable. Pathologic conditions ranging from a benign muscle or tendon strain to a potentially catastrophic femoral neck stress fracture can have similar clinical presentations. This article reviews many of the hip problems in adolescents and adults that present with anterior pain ( Table 1 ). Conditions of the lumbar spine that radiate pain to the anterior hip are not discussed. A brief review of hip pain in adolescents is included. TABLE 1

Low Back Pain: Tips on Pain Relief and Prevention
Printer-friendly version Email this article
What can cause low back injuries?
Many things can cause low back injuriesmuscle strain or spasm, sprains of ligaments (which attach bone to bone), joint problems or a "slipped disk." The most common cause is using your back muscles in activities you're not used to, like lifting heavy furniture or doing yard work. A slipped disk happens when the disk between the bones bulges and presses on nerves. This is often caused by twisting while lifting. But many people won't know what caused their slipped disk. Return to top
What can I do for relief when I've hurt my lower back?
The best position for relief when your back hurts is to lie on your back on the floor with pillows under your knees, with your hips and knees bent and your feet on a chair, or just with your hips and knees bent. This takes the pressure and weight off your back. If you're resting a hurt back, you may need 1 to 2 days of this sort of rest. Resting longer than this can cause your muscles to weaken, which can slow your recovery. Even if it hurts, walk around for a few minutes every hour.
