Health education or patient education is important aspect of disease management program. Even some programs, especially some chronic disease management can go further and introduced self-management for some aspect of illness. Good example is management of arthritis. There are a variety of models for both formal and informal self-management. However, the core concepts involve engagement in self-care, improved self-monitoring, interactions with healthcare professionals and coping with disease. Self-management programs are mostly provided to people with chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, and some skin diseases. Patient education and self-management programs are aim to improve the efficiency and quality of the healthcare process and overall improve quality of life. It is not really about reduction in doctor visits or clinic attendances. Even sometime, an improved healthcare process can include more frequent use of services because of improved compliance. In this website, you can find resources for articles about common health topics and news. New findings in the field are included some articles. Topics are categories in the alphabetical order and you can use Health Article Search Box to search the topic you want.

Hi, Welcome To Mona's OI Page.
We are very sad to say that Mona passed on November 3, 2003.
These pages will stay online in her honor and hopefully help others
My name is Mona and I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta or "Brittle bone disease"I was born in Germany in 1971 and at the time of my birth I had 136 broken bones, some inuerto (inside my mom) and some as I was born. I wasn't expected to live and when the doctor told my mom this she yelled at the doctor and got one fired for making such an assumption! I only weighed 2300 grams and I was about 42 centimeters long. The doctors said I wouldn't live at all, maybe 10 days max. After those 10 days they said I may live 3 years. Here I am at 28 years old. I am 3 feet tall and 50 pounds. My voice is very high-pitched and my head is flat in the back because I was born with no bones in my head. Thankfully I have a beautiful head of blond/brown hair .(And people say I'm hard headed). I also cruise around in an electric wheelchair. If people don't move I'll run over their toes. I'm putting out this page so people with OI have a place to give their testimony, for those we love and those who love us to have a place to learn more about this genetic disorder And mostly so we can learn more about this. Because I look a lot younger than I am it's hard to put my self out there and look mature, an adult. Boy do I blow them away when they see I'm an adult!

Collagen is a fibrous protein that provides structural and functional integrity in the human body. (See image above or download this high resolution TIFF image [7.6MB!].) Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder of collagen which occurs when there are mutations in the triple helix. Currently, only the diagnosis of a lethal OI phenotype can be determined in utero. Diagnosis of other OI phenotypes cannot be made until after birth. Mutations in type I collagen lead to an array of minor to lethal disorders. An understanding of the physical properties of native and mutant collagens will provide the basis for comprehending the etiology of OI phenotypes at the molecular level. This information is critical for the ultimate development of more useful genetic counseling protocols. Our strategy involves the development and application of tools to study various physical and chemical properties of collagen molecule fragments in order to predict the effects of amino acid substitution on the stabilities of the collagen helical conformation. Osteogenesis imperfecta is the best known of a group of disorders that disturb bone growth; these disorders are called osteodysplasias. In osteogenesis imperfecta, synthesis of collagen, one of the normal components of bone, is impaired. The bones become weak and fracture easily. There are several types of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Two shadows have recently been cast over the exciting field of gene therapy. One was cast by the unfortunate death of an 18-year-old man at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. The patient was part of a trial in which an adenovirus containing a gene for ornithine transcarbamylase was infused into patients with partial deficiencies of the enzyme. The death highlighted the potential dangers of the direct administration of adenoviruses and, perhaps, other viruses to patients. The second shadow was cast by a clinical trial involving children with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). The trial had an added Full Text of this Article

http://www.brittlebone.org/html/overview.htm
What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta? Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is the medical name for brittle bones. `Brittle Bones' refers to a range of conditions resulting from abnormalities in the protein structure of the bones. This causes the bones to break more easily than normal. What is it like to have brittle bones? Some children with OI are born with fractures, others have their first injury soon after birth, yet others when they try to walk for the first time. This is obviously a difficult time for the family and a large part of the society's work is to provide the guidance, support and information that they need. In a few cases children with brittle bones are, initially thought to have been injured by their parents. This accusation does great damage to the families and the Society can provide advice and support. Does it vary in severity?
