Out of the 8 million people in the UK who suffer from arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common This degenerative joint disease affects the cartilage - the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another and absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. Osteoarthritis causes the surface layer of cartilage to break down and wear away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, bone swelling and loss of joint motion. advertisement
Over time, the joint may lose its normal shape. Also, bone spurs (small growths called osteophytes) may grow on the edges of the joint. Bits of bone or cartilage can break off and float inside the joint space, causing more pain and damage. Osteoarthritis only affects joints. Rheumatoid arthritis - the second most common arthritis - affects other body parts besides joints. It also begins earlier than osteoarthritis, causes inflammation and can make the sufferer feel sick, tired and sometimes feverish.

Although the term osteoarthrosis may be more appropriate because in this condition inflammatory changes are not pronounced, the term osteoarthritis is more widely accepted. In osteoarthritis, cartilage and bone are the primary sites of abnormality, with only mild alterations occurring in the synovial membrane. Typically radiographs reveal loss of joint space eburnation , cyst formation and osteophytosis . Complications of this disorder include subluxation joint malalignment , fibrous ankylosis and intra-articular osseous and cartilaginous bodies. Two special varieties of osteoarthritis (generalized osteoarthritis and inflammatory [erosive] osteoarthritis) have also been described but may not be discrete entities. Joint degeneration may result either from an abnormal concentration of force across a joint with normal articular cartilage matrix or from a normal concentration of force across an abnormal joint. Among the causes of osteoarthritis are inherited factors, obesity, inflammation, trauma, mechanical factors, nutritional and metabolic status, osteoporosis and preexisting joint disease or deformity. In one way or another, these factors create a situation in which the joints can no longer resist the physical forces.

Osteoarthritis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as arthrosis osteoarthrosis or degenerative joint disease , is a disease featuring pain and impaired function of the joints . It is the most common form of arthritis . While inflammation contributes to the disease process, the main cause is "wear and tear" to the synovium (joint lining). Treatment is with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), local injections with glucocorticoids and with joint replacement surgery. There is no cure for osteoarthritis.

Signs and symptoms
The main symptoms are pain and restricted movement . The pain is chronic pain or gives varying amounts of discomfort when standing and walking. Pain is generally described as aching, sharp, or a burning sensation in the associated muscles and tendons, and includes loss of mobility and often stiffness. Humid weather increases the pain in many patients. Patients can experience muscle spasm and contractions in the tendons. Osteoarthritis can cause a crackling noise (called crepitus) when moved or palpated. Occasionally, affected joints may fill with fluid. Some develop Heberden's nodes and/or Bouchard's nodes in the fingers when these are affected.

The scientists looked at osteoarthritis of the hand
Scientists have identified genetic factors which may increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis. The breakthrough brings closer the prospect of effective treatments for the crippling disease. The US study, which looked at osteoarthritis in the hand, found eight areas of the human genome indicated an inherited risk for the disease. The discovery could provide information for doctors looking for new ways of diagnosing and treating osteoarthritis. Identifying so-called chromosomal regions on the genome, each which contain 50 to 100 genes, allows scientists to narrow down their hunt for the specific genes responsible for an individual condition.
If we do manage to identify the genes that provide a disease risk in OA, it will tell us a great deal about how the disease develops
Dr Madeleine Devey, Arthritis Research Campaign

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, affecting over 5% of adults, causes the progressive loss of protective cartilage in the joints. Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research found a mutant form of a gene called asporin was more common in osteoarthritis patients. The research is published in the journal Nature Genetics. It adds another piece to the jigsaw of understanding OA and also may provide a promising target for therapy
Dr Madeleine Devey The scientists, who focused on Japanese patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis, also found that the more severe the disease, the more likely the mutant form of asporin was to be present. To keep cartilage tissue healthy and functioning properly, the body must strike a delicate balance between breaking down cartilage that has come to the end of its useful life, and replacing it with fresh tissue.

About
Basics of osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a form of arthritis characterized by the loss of joint smoothness and range of motion without major joint inflammation. Facts and myths Fact: Low bone density is not associated with osteoarthritis Bone density is actually HIGHER, rather than LOWER, in osteoarthritis. Low bone density is the telltale sign of osteoporosis , a skeletal disorder characterized by weakened bones due to excessive loss of bone mass. Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is characterized by increased bone density and bony growths (osteophytes) in conjunction with articular cartilage degeneration. Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are two different diseases with opposite bone density problems. Fact: Drinking milk cannot prevent osteoarthritis Milk is an excellent source for calcium, which is important for bone formation. Good dietary practices may help protect individuals against osteoarthritis to some extent.
