It is found mostly in the small bones of the hand and/or feet, although it can also occur in long, tubular bones, primarily the humerus, femur and ribs. Occasionally, focal areas of mixoid degeneration may result in a mistaken diagnosis of chondrosarcoma. The lesions have a characteristic rings-and-arcs pattern of calcification, which suggests cartilaginous tumors. No pathologic fracture of any of these lesions is seen. The lesions are consistent with enchondromas. Multiple enchondromas in the hand are characteristic of Ollier disease or Maffucci syndrome. The differential diagnosis for a single lesion with this characteristic appearance includes epidermoid inclusion cyst, unicameral bone cyst, giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia, bone infarct, and chondrosarcoma.
