Conduct Disorder
In some ways, conduct disorder is just a worse version of ODD.  However recent research suggests that there are some differences.  Children with ODD seem to have worse social skills than those with CD.  Children with ODD seem to do better in school.  Conduct disorder is the most serious childhood psychiatric disorder.  Approximately 6-10% of boys and 2-9% of girls have this disorder.  Here is the Definition. A. A repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major society rules are violated.  At least three of the following criteria must be present in the last 12 months, and at least one criterion must have been present in the last 6 months. Aggression to people and animals
  • often bullies, threatens, or intimidates others
  • often initiates physical fights
  • has used a weapon that can cause serious physical harm to others (a bat, brick, broken bottle, knife, gun)
  • physically cruel to animals
  • physically cruel to people
  • has stolen while confronting a victim ( mugging, purse snatching, extortion, armed robbery)

ODD-CD part 10
What can be done?
As far as ODD goes, the same feelings you can have about children and adolescents with ODD have probably influenced the research community.  This is the most common psychiatric diagnosis in children. It persists into adulthood.  One would think a lot of research would be done on this condition. That is not the case.  A search of the medical literature for the last 3 years show 293 articles on ADHD in children, 276 on depression in children, but only 19 on ODD. The same is not true for CD.  There is a lot of research on different treatment methods for this problem.  There are hundreds of psychological techniques which have been tried, but none have been found to be always successful.  They involve behavior modification, working with families, and tight supervision.  The best results have been found with what is called multisystem therapy.  What that means is, do a lot of different things at the same time.  As far as this pamphlet goes, it means you should not rely on just one type of intervention.  Ideally, you should use a little of all of them.  Overall, since CD is usually just a very severe form of ODD, all of the below can be useful in CD.  At the end of this section are some other suggestions for CD. Treat Comorbid disorders
CD plus ADHD
Treating the comorbid disorders is absolutely key.  Recent studies have shown that treating CD plus ADHD with stimulants helps the conduct disorder and the ADHD symptoms.  This effect appears independent of how bad the ADHD is.  Since 60-70% of children who go to a clinic for help with CD also have ADHD, this is extremely important.  Serious consideration should be given to medically treating all children with CD plus ADHD.  Although this type of medical intervention does not make the children "normal", it can make a big difference.  It often means that the non-medical interventions will work much better.

AD/HD and Co-Existing Disorders - CHADD Fact Sheet #5 As many as two thirds of children with AD/HD have at least one other coexisting condition. The constant motion and fidgetiness, interrupting and blurting out, difficulty waiting in lines or sitting in restaurants, and need for constant reminders may overshadow these other disorders. But just as untreated AD/HD can leave lasting scars, so too can other untreated disorders cause unnecessary suffering in individuals with AD/HD and their families. Any disorder can coexist with AD/HD, but certain disorders seem to occur more commonly with AD/HD. How are These Co-Existing Conditions Identified? Which Conditions most Commonly Co-Exist with AD/HD? AD/HD may co-exist with one or more disorders. The most common disorders to occur with AD/HD are (1) Disruptive Behavior Disorders; (2) Mood Disorders; (3) Anxiety Disorders; (4) Tics and Tourette’s Syndrome; and (5) Learning Disabilities. Disruptive Behavior Disorders (Oppositional-Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder) About 40 percent of individuals with AD/HD have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Among individuals with AD/HD, conduct disorder (CD) is also common, occurring in 25 percent of children, 45-50 percent of adolescents and 20-25 percent of adults. ODD involves a pattern of arguing with multiple adults, losing one’s temper, refusing to follow rules, blaming others, deliberately annoying others, and being angry, resentful, spiteful, and vindictive.

A major conflict has arisen in the local school district between mostly white teachers and administrators and mostly black parents over corporal punishment. The superintendent asks you to consult with the school board and the parents association as they seek an evidence-based approach to the dispute. Their first question to you is: “Doesn’t corporal punishment harm children’s behavioral/emotional development?” What evidence might be helpful in illuminating this conflict? a. Point out Deater-Deckard et al’s finding that corporal punishment indeed was associated with poor outcomes, particularly for already-stressed African American children; but it was relatively harmless for White children. b. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
What is it?
ODD is a psychiatric disorder that is characterized by two different sets of problems. These are aggressiveness and a tendency to purposefully bother and irritate others. It is often the reason that people seek treatment. When ODD is present with ADHD, depression, tourette's, anxiety disorders, or other neuropsychiatric disorders, it makes life with that child far more difficult. For Example, ADHD plus ODD is much worse than ADHD alone, often enough to make people seek treatment. The criteria for ODD are:
A pattern of negativistic, hostile, and defiant behavior lasting at least six months during which four or more of the following are present:

One of the most important thing to know about ADHD is that children with ADHD are at increased risk for developing other types of behavior disorders, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD). The reason this is so important is that when this occurs, the long-term outcomes for children are likely to be much worse than for a child who has ADHD alone. The information below is intended to provide your with an overview of the diagnostic criteria for these conditions and how they differ from ADHD.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Listed below are DSM-IV symptoms for ODD:
1. often loses temper;
2. often argues with adults;
3. often actively defies or refuses to comply with adult requests or rules;
4. often deliberately annoys people;
5. often blames others for mistakes or misbehavior;

WIDE AWAKE IN MY HEAD
Since right now I'm kinda between bands (except for the wonderful Nortons) I started digging through some of my old recordings, desperately seeking validation. I was surprised by the amount of good songs and recordings I'd made over the years. I'd actually forgotten, and in one case lost(!), some of my older recordings. (Thanks for the save, Rick Allison.) I thought about making a "Greatest Hits" CD, and then realized I'm not that desperate. So I came up with a "rarities" concept: material that I like a lot, and I think deserves a second look. The result is "Wide Awake In My Head: retakes, remakes, and other Odd Fish, 1989 -2003". Sixteen tracks. Many of them are alternate, previously unreleased, versions of songs you may already know if you're a Velvet/Mox fan. For instance there's a version of "Corrina Gets Away" performed by me and Jim Chapdelaine that's quite different from the Mox' version on "...Gone/Tomorrow..." There are two versions of "She Comes And Goes." And, of course, wonderful versions of "Wide Awake" and "In My Head." The release date is November 1. I'll be selling the discs at gigs and locally at Exile On Main Street. I hope you'll get one or two for your family and friends.

Introduction
Although it is normal for both children and adolescents to exhibit some type of oppositional behavior as they mature, some children and adolescents may exhibit behaviors that are significantly disruptive to the point where they may impair functioning. Such troublesome and provoking behaviors comprise a host of syndromes and typically are behaviors exhibited by children that are diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD). Typically, children who suffer from these mental health disorders display behavior that is disturbing, potentially dangerous as well as disruptive (Boesky, 2002). However, this section will specifically address ODD and CD since these two disorder are often referred to as the “disruptive disorders” (Boesky). Disruptive disorders are complex and may lead to long-term adverse consequences affecting academic performance, as well as difficulties in social and emotional development.
