Diagnosis and Management of Ocular Motility Disorders
Alec M Ansons and Helen Davis Blackwell Science, published December 2000 The aim of this book has always been to give guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of ocular motility disorders which is based on clinical experience rather than to provide a comprehensive treatise on the subject drawn from the primary literature. The Third Edition sees a new team of authors who have kept very much to this priniciple in their nevertheless thorough revision of the book. Whilst there are no new chapters as such, the immediate impact of the revision is in the improved page layout with increased use of diagrams and flowcharts. There are new sections on feigned visual loss in adults and children, the management of residual defects and the section on botulinum toxin treatment in chapter 8 has been re-written to take account of the great advances in this form of treatment.

Visual Sciences Training Program Major Research Themes of the Visual Sciences Training Program The development of the VSTP became possible as research in vision science became a major area of emphasis at CWRU and five major research themes evolved. The thematic organization of our program is a major benefit to trainees as the opportunity exists to take advantage of both departmental-specific and vision theme-specific activities. Brief descriptions of each of the five vision research themes follow and more information can be obtained from links in the Program Faculty section. To get an idea where vision research is going nationally, look at a special report from the National Eye Institute: Vision Research—A National Plan: 1999-2003 http://www.nei.nih.gov/publications/plan/plan.htm Ocular Development Understanding ocular development is critical because there are numerous developmental diseases that affect eye function. Equally important is the fact that information about development is necessary to design optimized therapeutic approaches to ocular pathologies due to traumatic injury and disease of the mature eye. Members of the Ocular Development Theme study both the front and back of the eye as well as extraocular tissues, using modern cell biological and molecular biological approaches.

I. Introduction
Dalhousie University offers the programme Master of Science Clinical Vision Science in cooperation with the IWK Health Centre and the IWK School of Orthoptics and Ophthalmic Medical Technology. This is a two-year degree programme with thesis, requiring two years (six terms) full time fees, with a thesis continuation fee charged each term over the two years.
Orthoptists/ophthalmic medical technologists are professionals integral to eye care. They perform a wide range of diagnostic and highly technical procedures, and, in consultation with an opthalmologist, plan, implement and monitor treatment of a wide variety of ocular disorders, including disorders of binocular vision and ocular motility. They are engaged in a wide range of activities including research into ocular motility, education of other eye care professionals, patient education and vision screening.

Visual Requirements for Aviation (Europe, USA, South Africa and Australia)
One of the most commonly asked questions by aspiring pilots is about the visual standards required and the possibility of refractive surgery. The pages that follow represent a summary of the current ophthalmological standards for four of the common aviation authorities from which medical certificates are sought, the European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) in the USA, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority of Australia (CASA). The standards are significantly different between the authorities, and are laid out here to allow comparison.
It is believed that the European Joint Aviation Authorities are considering modifying their limitations on refractive error to be more in keeping with the current FAA standards. However, this is still under consideration and, if accepted, is unlikely to be applicable before 2001 (Perry I.C., Pilot, July 1999).
Explanation of terms Distance visual acuity is a measure of the sensitivity of the eye in terms of differentiating between objects of similar size.

Alison Y. Firth Supranuclear and internuclear control of eye movements: a review
Fiona Rowe Abstract: Aim: To review conjugate and disjugate eye movement systems Methods: A literature review was undertaken to review saccadic, smooth pursuit and vergence eye movements in particular but also the integration of vestibulo-ocular and opto-kinetic responses Results : The type of movement generated, the mechanism of reaction to produce the eye movement, supranuclear pathways and internuclear pathways plus neural integration of the eye movement are described. The neural substrate for horizontal and vertical gaze control is addressed and the clinical disorders of eye movement that may be encountered are disucssed. Conclusion : Knowledge of neuro anatomy is pertinent to the understanding of eye movement pathways and the subsequent disorders that occur due to pathology affecting these structures Key words: Eye movement, Internuclear, Opto-kinetic response, Saccades, Smooth pursuit, Supranuclear, Vergence, Vestibulo-ocular response.
