W elcome to OCDOnline.Com. This web site is exclusively devoted to promoting a greater understanding of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder's (OCD) treatment and mental processes. The creator of this site, Dr Steven Phillipson, recognizes that OCD is still minimally understood by the vast majority of mental health professionals. Although the most commonly known forms of OCD (contamination and checking) have received the greatest amount of media and research attention, lessor known forms of OCD (i.e. the purely obsessional type and the responsibility OC ) make up a very large proportion of the clinical population. The articles presented here represent state of the art conceptual understanding and treatment approaches developed for mainstream and lessor studied forms of OCD. D r. Steven Phillipson is a licensed clinical psychologist who has specialized in the cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) of OCD since 1986. Dr. Phillipson has contributed numerous articles to the OC Foundation's newsletter and was asked in 1991 to produce the first video on the treatment of the purely obsessional type of OCD. In 1987 Dr. Phillipson and his mentor Dr Gordon Ball started the first

Abstract: A new hypothesis is presented within the framework of evolutionary psychology that attempts to explain the origins of obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is hypothesised that obsessional phenomena function as an off-line risk avoidance process, designed to lead to risk avoidance behaviour at a future time, thus distinguishing it from anxiety and related phenomena as

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER What Is OCD? Persons with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have a combination of thought and behavior disturbances which are characterized by recurring unwelcome thoughts and/or compulsions to perform certain behaviors. The person usually views these thoughts and behaviors as irrational. One can have either obsessions or compulsions to receive this diagnosis, but most people have a combination of each. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder affects approximately 2.5% of the population. There is some research evidence that Obsessive-Compulsive disorder may be genetic. Approximately equal numbers of men and women are diagnosed with this disorder. What Is An Obsession? Obsessions are disturbing thoughts, ideas, impulses and/or images that won't go away, even though the individual may view them as irrelevant or unpleasant. We all experience mild obsessions at some points in time such as having songs stick our their heads. However, this usually passes after a little while. In contrast, a person with obsessive thoughts has problematic thoughts almost constantly. Common obsessions include:
  • Contamination: "I have become contaminated by touching another person".

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder which can afflict a person throughout his lifetime: "The individual who suffers from OCD becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive thoughts and behaviors that are senseless and distressing but extremely difficult to overcome" ( http:www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/ocd.htm ). Obsessions and compulsions are the two main components of this disorder. The former are often highly negative such as an ever-present fear of germs. Compulsions such as repeated handwashings are rituals designed to lessen anxiety produced by obsessions. Depending on the severity, OCD can have an adverse affect on every realm of a person's life. The outlook is optimistic, however, because research has shown that even people suffering from severe OCD may benefit from medication, behavioral therapy, or a combination of the two. Researchers have gained much insight into the cause of the disorder by comparing OCD brains with "normal" brains. There is continued debate about whether OCD is caused by neurobiological factors, environmental influences, or both. There is at least evidence to show that the brains of OCD sufferers differ from "normal" brains in systematic ways: "Recent preliminary studies of the brain using magnetic resonance imaging showed that the subjects with OCD had significantly less white matter than did normal control subjects, suggesting a widely distributed brain abnormality in OCD" (

    HEALTH WATCH
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Spring 94 By Michelle Glennie Doctors used to think that obsessive compulsive disorder was a fairly rare psychiatric condition; and, until recently, it was a condition that was largely unknown to the public. Now, recent studies show that the disorder is common and treatable. Dr. Margaret Richter, Staff Psychiatrist at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, writes: "... obsessive compulsive disorder is a chronic, unrecognized psychiatric illness, affecting 2.5% of people at some point in their life". She also points out that this figure is likely to be higher since sufferers often keep their condition "secret, fearing it would be thought weird or crazy". The fear of disclosing this condition stems from OCD's symptoms: obsessions or compulsions, or, in some sufferers, both. Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, ideas, images and impulses that a person recognizes as senseless. Often sufferers experience recurrent fearstypically, causing harm to themselves, or someone else, losing control of their composure, being contaminated by germs.

If you are feeling anxious, you are certainly not alone. It is believed that as many as 16 percent of the adult United States population may have generalized anxiety disorder. Fear is a basic human response. A healthy fear protects you from real harm but an irrational fear, or phobia, can control you and keep you from living life to its fullest. Although the problem is common, you don't have to continue to suffer.
