Obesity
Many diseases are associated with overweight and obesity. Women, especially women of color, who are overweight or obese are at increased risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and some types of cancer. The health outcomes related to these diseases, however, often can be improved through weight loss or, at a minimum, no further weight gain. Overweight and obesity affect a large proportion of the total U.S. population. Obesity has been called a true epidemic.

Then last year, at the age of 16, he turned to a drastic measure to lose weight bariatric surgery, or what is sometimes known as stomach stapling. "I wanted something that would work for me and I knew that the surgery would do that," Jose said. With childhood obesity rates soaring, some teenagers are turning to the once adult-only surgery, a procedure that closes off parts of the stomach and, sometimes, intestines. This restricts the amount of food a person can eat and creates a fuller feeling with a much smaller portion. In the seven months after his surgery, Jose lost 100 pounds and says he is still dropping weight.

Satcher: Obesity almost as bad as smoking
Obesity is reaching "epidemic proportions" in the United States, Surgeon General David Satcher said Thursday, and could soon cause as much preventable disease and death as cigarette smoking. More than 61 percent of adults and 14 percent of adolescents are affected by obesity and some 300,000 die each year from health problems directly related to obesity, Satcher noted. He released a "call to action" to battle a condition he has said should be treated as a disease. However, obesity is not just something that affects the individual, Satcher said. Obesity costs the United States $117 billion per year. VIDEO A report by the U.S. Surgeon General suggests obesity is costing us financially. CNN's Sanjay Gupta reports (December 13) Play video Satcher said his call to action will seek to promote the recognition of obesity as a health problem and help Americans learn how to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. In addition, Satcher said programs to treat obesity and encourage people to change their eating and exercise habits will be implemented.

OK, so I was not gonna do a website to track my weight loss progress. I do, look at , teach, analyze, adjust websites, and network related stuff all day for students and clients, so the last thing I really wanted to spend any time on was doing one for me. But, as life would have it, Ive been asked, and convinced it may be a fun way to share my still very young journey into the world of a smaller, better fitting, healthier, less me, well ME. So, here it is! Don't expect a lot of glitzy, flashy, sparkly things that you see on some of these sites, I'm just not into that, and personally think it detracts from the value of the content. But hey, that's just me. On YOUR website, you can have as many jumping beans, flying squirrels, or whatever you desire. Its a free country! This is my site, and what I will promise, is that I will try to have meaningful and interesting content that is pertinent to my weight loss, and learning curve in knowing myself and my food relationships better. If you enjoy it I glad, if not, you can access the complaint department by clicking that little X on the upper right corner of your screen.

Obesity in dogs
Obesity is a major problem for pet dogs
Introduction
Obesity in dogs is a serious medical problem. Fat dogs are more at risk in surgery, more prone to injury, and have more stress on their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints.
A guide to determine if Pal is malnourished
Overweight dogs have increasing amounts of fat over the ribs and minimal or absent waist and tuck-up. Obese dogs have heavy fat over the ribs, along the spine, and around the tail. Morbidly fat dogs have protruding abdomens and fat deposits throughout their bodies. Owners can examine their own dogs for a fat layer on the ribs and the visibility of a waist and tuck-up. Breed characteristics should be taken into account of course, as some breeds have more prominent ribs and tuck-ups when in optimum condition. In general, dogs with protruding bones and the appearance of muscle loss are too thin. Many dog food manufacturers sell low-calorie diets for dogs that are worth a look, and some companies sell prescription weight-loss diets through veterinary practices. However, caution is the rule when using these rations.

Daft: Simplistic solutions won't cure obesity By SCOTT LEITH
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution NEW YORK The growing obesity epidemic has become a key threat to much of the beverage business, the top executive of Coca-Cola said Monday as part of his push to both defend the industry and encourage sales of new kinds of drinks. Doug Daft, Coke's chairman and chief executive, said the obesity issue is "top of mind" and possibly the biggest challenge the soft-drink business has faced in the last 50 years. To cope, he called for cooperation among all those in the industry, along with imploring the public not to look for simplistic solutions to obesity, such as banning soft drinks.

But just how many years will the fat take from you? A new study shows for the first time how much life expectancy is shortened for those who are overweight or obese at 40. For smokers, the statistics are even worse. "If you're overweight, you basically live three years less ... and if you're obese, you live approximately six to seven years less," says Dr. Robert Eckel with the American Heart Association.
