Nutrition, obesity and perception
Focusing on America's children
CHICAGO, Illinois A spate of recent medical studies points to Americans' fears and concerns regarding obesity and diet - both real and imagined. Five studies focused on a variety of obesity-related issues, including unnatural body image expectations among girls as young as 5 and the effects of actual obesity on children's health. All are published in this month's issue of the journal Pediatrics. The reports surface even as concern grows over the number of overweight youngsters 25 percent and rising, by some estimates. Even very young children are aware of society's fixation on thinness, according to a study from Penn State University. Researchers found that lowered self-esteem was associated with being overweight in girls as young as 5. This attitude was closely correlated with parents' perceptions. "Don't tease girls about their weight, even in a gentle way," Dr. Leann Birch, head of the university's department of human development and family studies and a study co-author, advised in a statement. "It's clear from our study that the notion that one's weight can be a social liability emerges early on."

Obesity linked to virus, new experiments suggest
(AP) A cold-like virus may cause obesity, new experiments suggest. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison have found that mice and chickens infected with a common human virus put on much more fat than uninfected animals. They have also discovered that the same virus is more prevalent among overweight people, a strong indication that it may also cause obesity in humans. In four experiments, the Wisconsin researchers inoculated chickens and mice with adenovirus-36, a member of a viral family that includes about 50 strains. Most adenoviruses cause colds, diarrhea or pinkeye.

Obesity drugs alone won't do it
By Christy Oglesby CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) The pitch is all in the verbs: Absorb. Block. Burn. Metabolize. The names and promises of obesity drugs make it sound as if the pills will do all the work consuming, searing and routing fat right out of a body. Hardly. "I know of no drugs that absorb fat. It would be nice to say there's this drug that's a sponge that will suck it up, but it won't," said Dr. Arthur Frank, medical director of the weight management program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. And the obesity drugs that do increase metabolism or block the absorption of fat also require work and diet modification. None of the obesity drugs on the market is particularly potent, experts said. And they won't work without a decrease in food and fat consumption coupled with an increase in physical activity. VIDEO Some have been let down by new diet drugs. CNN's Elizabeth Cohen reports (August 22)

Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, released the first Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity. About 97 million adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity and overweight substantially increase the risk of morbidity from hypertension; dyslipidemia; type 2 diabetes; coronary heart disease; stroke; gallbladder disease; osteoarthritis; sleep apnea and respiratory problems; and endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancers. Higher body weights are also associated with increases in all-cause mortality. The following items related to the guidelines are available below:

Roc W. Bauman, MD, F.A.C.S.
This website is intended as a source for those patients seeking information regarding obesity surgery including the laparoscopic gastric bypass and the
Lap-Band (laparoscopic adjustable band). Carolina Weight Loss Surgery is located in Concord, NC, USA and specializes in the practice of laparoscopic obesity surgery.
Morbid obesity is defined as the maintenance of body weight to such an extent that it significantly increases the risk for the development of other medical illnesses and the shortening of life span. A weight greater than 100 pounds over ideal body weight and/or those persons whose body mass index (BMI) (weight in pounds x 703/height in inches x height in inches) is greater than 40 qualify as super obese and are considered candidates for weight loss surgery. Patients who feel they have exhausted all efforts at medical, dietary, and exercise approaches may be candidates for obesity surgery. Patients with medical illnesses associated with obesity (Diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, arthritis/degenerative joint disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, coronary artery disease) or conditions made more severe with obesity are considered surgical candidates at a BMI of 35.
Weight loss surgery can reduce if not eliminate these comorbidities, lengthen lifespan, and return the enjoyment of everyday activities to the patient.

Obesity Education Initiative
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the Obesity Education Initiative (OEI) in January 1991. The overall purpose of the initiative is to help reduce the prevalence of overweight along with the prevalence of physical inactivity in order to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and overall morbidity and mortality from CHD. In addition, reducing the prevalence of overweight will help reduce the prevalence and severity of sleep apnea.

Overview Do you weigh more than you should? If so, you're like the two-thirds of American adults who are overweight. About one in three American adults is considered to be obese. And childhood obesity is at an all-time high. Obesity is more than a cosmetic concern. Being seriously overweight puts you at greater risk of developing high blood pressure and many other serious health risks. Ultimately, obesity can even be life-threatening. Annually in the United States, more than 300,000 deaths are linked to obesity. The good news is that even a modest weight loss can bring health improvements. In many cases, you can accomplish this by eating healthier, exercising and changing behaviors. For people who don't respond to lifestyle changes, prescription medications and surgical techniques are available to enhance the weight-loss process.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Former President Bill Clinton said his weight problem and brush with death are the catalysts behind his foundation's initiative of tackling childhood obesity. Once famous for his love of fast food, Clinton told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta that bad health habits since childhood led to his September 2004 quadruple bypass surgery. That operation, he said, opened his eyes to a larger issue, and he turned his attention to the problem of overweight American children. "The brush with death I had maybe had the biggest impact of all," Clinton recalled. "I realized that one more time I've been given another chance, and I wanted to make the most of it."
