TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) Some 97 million American adults, or 55 percent, are considered overweight or obese. According to the National Institutes of Health, this epidemic of obesity, which is also a growing problem among children, costs nearly $100 billion annually. That includes costs for weight loss treatment and treatment of many serious health problems caused by obesity.

Obesity and overweight Facts
  • Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese. Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. The key causes are increased consumption of energy-dense foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and reduced physical activity.
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. Often coexisting in developing countries with under-nutrition, obesity is a complex condition, with serious social and psychological dimensions, affecting virtually all ages and socioeconomic groups. Increased consumption of more energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats, combined with reduced physical activity, have led to obesity rates that have risen three-fold or more since 1980 in some areas of North America, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, Australasia and China. The obesity epidemic is not restricted to industrialized societies; this increase is often faster in developing countries than in the developed world.

First Federal Obesity Clinical Guidelines Released
The first Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults were released today by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). These clinical practice guidelines are designed to help physicians in their care of overweight and obesity, a growing public health problem that affects 97 million American adults 55 percent of the population. These individuals are at increased risk of illness from hypertension, lipid disorders, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and certain cancers. The total costs attributable to obesity-related disease approaches $100 billion annually. "Overweight and obesity pose a major public health challenge. The development of these guidelines was a pioneering achievement since they were the first ever developed by the Institute using an evidence-based model and methodology," said NHLBI Director Dr. Claude Lenfant. "This report will be an invaluable clinical tool for any health care professional who works with overweight or obese patients," he added.

Obesity Overview
The foods we eat every day contribute to our well-being. Foods provide us with the nutrients we need for healthy bodies and the calories we need for energy. If we eat too much, however, the extra food turns to fat and is stored in our bodies. If we overeat regularly, we gain weight, and if we continue to gain weight, we may become obese. Obesity means accumulation of excess fat on the body. Obesity is considered a chronic (long-term) disease, like high blood pressure or diabetes. It has many serious long-term consequences for your health, and it is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States (tobacco is the first). Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30. The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height. See eMedicine's Body Mass Index Calculator Each year, Americans spend billions of dollars on dieting, diet foods, diet books, diet pills, and the like. Another $45 billion is spent on treating the diseases associated with obesity. Furthermore, businesses suffer an estimated $20 billion loss in productivity each year from absence due to illness caused by obesity. Last updated: Aug 10, 2005

People from all across America and around the world are choosing the MGB as the Best in Bariatric Surgery. New Findings: Controlled Prospective Randomized Trial of MGB vs. RNY Gastric Bypass shows MGB simpler and safer! Mini-Gastric Bypass Outperforms Biliopancreatic Diversion MGB outperforms Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass, MGB outperforms Laparoscopic Gastric Banding and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty Roux-en-Y Versus Mini-Gastric Bypass for the Treatment of Morbid Obesity: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial. Citation: Annals of Surgery. 242(1):20-28, July 2005. Obesity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Obesity is a significant public health concern throughout the developed and developing world. Scientists investigating the mechanisms and treatment of obesity are using transgenic animals, such as the mouse on left, to learn more. Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve of humans or other mammals , which is stored in fat tissue , is expanded far beyond usual levels to the point where it impairs health . Obesity in wild animals is relatively rare, but it is common in domestic animals like pigs and household pets who may be overfed and underexercised . In humans it is considered a major challenge to health. While cultural and scientific definitions of obesity are subject to change, it is accepted that excessive body weight predisposes to various forms of disease , particularly cardiovascular disease . Interventions, such as

Welcome to the Website of the Minnesota Obesity Center!
The Minnesota Obesity Center is an Obesity Nutrition Research Center funded by the National Institute of Diabetes, and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Our Mission is to find ways to prevent weight gain, obesity and its complications. Center resources for research are organized into Core Facilities which provide the support for conducting the research. The Center incorporates 46 Participating Investigators who are studying the causes and treatments of obesity. The Minnesota Obesity Center awards small research grants through its Pilot and Feasibility Program , with additional support provided through the Core Facilities. The Education Enrichment Program for the Minnesota Obesity Center provides the general public with a source of information on the happenings of the Center and on the current developments in the field of obesity. This program includes a bimonthly Seminar Series
Our Mission
The mission of the Minnesota Obesity Center is to find ways to prevent weight gain and secondarily the onset of obesity and complications of obesity Obesity is clearly a major source of illness and death, and is the most common nutritional ailment in the United States. Despite its prevalence, there is little known about effective measures to prevent obesity, and therefore its attendant complications. Further, it is well known that obese individuals can more easily lose weight than maintain the loss. It now seems clear that the emphasis should be prevention of initial weight gain, and failing that, prevention of regain after weight loss.
