Link found between obesity and brain receptors
February 1, 2001 Web posted at: 6:30 p.m. EST (2330 GMT) Elizabeth Cohen CNN Medical Correspondent UPTON, New York (CNN) Brain scans show that obese people, just like drug addicts, have fewer receptors for dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps produce feelings of satisfaction and pleasure. The finding at the Brookhaven National Laboratory has prompted scientists to theorize that one reason people overeat is to stimulate the dopamine "pleasure" circuits in the brain, just as addicts do by taking drugs. "This is the first scientific contribution that the addictive pathways are deficient in the obese and it may explain their cravings," said Dr. George Blackburn, an associate professor of nutrition at Harvard Medical School. In the study, scientists measured the number of dopamine receptors in the brains of 10 severely obese individuals and in 10 people with normal weight, by giving each subject an injection containing a radiotracer a radioactive chemical "tag" designed to bind to dopamine receptors in the brain. Researchers then scanned the subjects' brains using a positron emission tomography (PET) camera, which picks up radioactive signals. The strength of the signal indicated the number of receptors.

The most important part of being a normal weight isn't looking a certain way - it's feeling good and staying healthy. Having too much body fat can be harmful to the body in many ways. The good news is that it's never too late to make changes in eating and exercise habits to control your weight, and those changes don't have to be as big as you might think. So if you or someone you know is obese or overweight, this article can give you information and tips for dealing with the problem by adopting a healthier lifestyle. What Is Obesity?
Being obese and being overweight are not exactly the same thing. An obese person has a large amount of extra body fat, not just a few extra pounds. People who are obese are very overweight and at risk for serious health problems. To determine if someone is obese, doctors and other health care professionals often use a measurement called body mass index (BMI). First, a doctor measures a person's height and weight. Then the doctor uses these numbers to calculate another number, the BMI. Once the doctor has calculated a child's or teen's BMI, he or she will plot this number on a specific chart to see how it compares to other people of the same age and gender. A person with a BMI above the 95

Proposals include curbing TV ads aimed at children, raising concerns for firms like Coca-Cola By SCOTT LEITH
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution A watchdog group that monitors Britain's food and health is weighing proposals that could ban or restrict ads that target children. The reason: British kids, like those in the United States, are getting fatter and fatter. The urge to do something about the problem could have major ramifications for companies ranging from Coca-Cola to Pepsico to McDonald's, which are fighting against regulations on several fronts.

The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate. On the whole, kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console. And today's busy families have fewer free moments to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals , day in and day out. From fast food to electronics, quick and easy seems to be the mindset of many people, young and old, in the new millennium. Since the 1970s, the percentage of overweight kids and adolescents in the United States has more than doubled. Today, 10% of 2- to 5-year-olds and more than 15% of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight. If you combine the percent of kids who are overweight with the percent of kids who are at risk of becoming overweight, about one out of three children are affected. Preventing your children from becoming overweight means adapting the way you and your family eat and exercise and the way you spend time together. Helping your children lead healthy lifestyles begins with you, the parent, and leading by example. Is Your Child Overweight?

Study blames obesity for rise in disabilities
Story Tools WASHINGTON (AP) Disability rates rose sharply in the last two decades among those under 60, and obesity appears to be the main reason, according to a new study. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Obesity Diseases Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The Rand Corp. study published in the journal Health Affairs said the health of young Americans is getting worse. It found the number of people ages 30-49 who could not care for themselves or do other routine tasks increased by more than half from 1984 to 2000. Meanwhile, the elderly have become less likely to suffer such disabilities. "We've always had the assumption that medical science is advancing and that people are getting healthier, but that is not the case," said Darius Lakdawalla, lead author of the study. For those 30- to 39-years-old, the number reporting disabilities increased from 118 per 10,000 people to 182 per 10,000 people from 1984 to 1996. Among those 40- to 49-years-old, the number rose from 212 per 10,000 to 278 per 10,000 in the same period.

Cohen The rates of diabetes and heart disease are rising rapidly in the U.S. and obesity is part of the problem. But most people don't know that being overweight can also increase a person's risk of cancer. CNN Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joined American Morning host Paula Zahn to tell the story. PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR : Most people realize being overweight is bad for your heart. But a new report out today explains that being fat also makes you more likely to get cancer. CNN medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joins us now for today's house call. They've hinted at this for years. ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT : Yes. ZAHN : Is this the definitive study that would show that link? COHEN : Well, there's no such thing as a definitive study so, you know, who knows? But they won't be telling us that fat is OK.

Story Tools PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) Health care workers should screen all adult patients for weight problems and suggest intensive counseling for those who are obese, an influential government task force is recommending. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Obesity Diet and Fitness Medical Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said behavioral therapy and high-intensity counseling can yield a "modest, sustained weight loss" in obese people. "Eating and exercising are behaviors in themselves and they're behaviors that are difficult to change," said Dr. Janet Allan, task force vice chair and dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. In a report being published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the task force analyzed previous studies of weight loss treatments and reviewed controlled trials involving counseling of obese adults. It found that intense counseling and behavioral therapy can typically result in weight loss of 6.6 to 11 pounds after at least one year.
