(CNN) Some Americans have become increasingly anxious about their health in the age of SARS, anthrax mailing scares and West Nile virus. But perhaps obesity should be a bigger concern. It's the No. 1 health threat in the United States at the moment, experts say. Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says that poor diet and exercise habits almost have caught up with smoking in contributing to the leading cause of death. Gerberding adds that 65 percent of American adults are overweight or obese and that nearly 40 million adults face serious health risks as a result of obesity. She calls the nation's rates of obesity a "catastrophe" and says the only way to improve these statistics is for people to make a radical change in their behavior, including more physical activity.

O BESITY IN C HILDREN AND T EENS No. 79 The problem of childhood obesity in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at nearly $100 billion. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. What is obesity?
A few extra pounds do not suggest obesity. However they may indicate a tendency to gain weight easily and a need for changes in diet and/or exercise. Generally, a child is not considered obese until the weight is at least 10 percent higher than what is recommended for the height and body type. Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during adolescence. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. What causes obesity?

Fatter parents, fatter kids: Childhood obesity is a hefty problem
RELATED VIDEO CNN's Holly Firfer reports Windows Media September 8, 1998
Web posted at: 9:14 p.m. EDT (0114 GMT) (CNN) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 percent of all American adults are overweight. And as Mom and Dad get fatter, so do the children. Two new studies provide insight into the rise in childhood weight gain. A study in the journal Pediatrics found feeding an infant solid food before 6 months of age does not contribute to weight gain as some experts had feared. However, numbers say childhood obesity is still a serious problem. About 8 percent of all preschool-age children are overweight, and nearly double that are overweight between age 6 and 11. This latest research underscores the need for parents to become involved in their children's eating behaviors, physical activity and general weight control.

The Complexity of Obesity
by Mary Pat Palmer "Fat is beautiful, along with every other shape, size or form. The oldest depiction of divinity on earth is the Goddess of Willendorf, a large-breasted, large-bellied clay Mother figure 30,000 years old," observes Diane Stein, author of "Natural Remedy". Certainly this is good to recall when fat has become an obsession, such as with anorexia, bulimia, constant dieting and bingeing, when the issue of weight is clearly out of perspective. While fat is a feminist issue, it is also a health issue. Obesity can endanger the internal organs through clogging, making exercise difficult and slowing down the entire system. All of the internal organs can be endangered, particularly the heart. Obesity arises from many general places. Obesity can be hereditary, although there is some question about the behavioral component and the genetic, or it can result from a glandular dis-order. Eating the "wrong foods" can contribute to obesity. Over-eating is another factor, again somewhat complicated because conditions can become habitual in the system, such as the slowing of the metabolism. People do have different metabolic rates, and these play a very strong role in their body type.

Fat or not? The NIH weighs in again on obesity
October 1, 1998
Web posted at: 6:33 p.m. EDT (1833 GMT) From CNN Medical Corrrespondent Elizabeth Cohen ATLANTA (CNN) The National Institutes of Health has some advice for people who are no more than 30 pounds overweight: quit trying to lose weight. The obesity experts say that being 30 pounds overweight isn't all that dangerous, and studies show most people gain it back anyway. The NIH this week published information relating to the strict set of guidelines it set out in June for determining who is considered overweight. The guidelines, which were seen as controversial, are based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) , a height-to-weight formula that ignores whether the weight is from fat or muscle. It also ignores whether someone has a large or small frame. The weights are the same for men and women. The new NIH guidelines mark a turning point in the way doctors think about weight loss, Dr. Xavier Pi-Sunyer , chairman of the NIH obesity panel and director of endocrinology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, said in an interview with CNN.
