What is Nystagmus? N ystagmus Network Homepage or the UK Nystagmus Action Group page. What is the difference between congenital and acquired Nystagmus? Congenital Nystagmus is that which exists from birth or soon after. Apparently, some Nystagmus is normal in an infant, but it should be investigated if it persists. Acquired Nystagmus can appear later in life as a result of medications, head trauma, tumors, and a variety of other things. What is visual acuity like with Nystagmus? Anywhere from 20/20-20/400 with Nystagmus alone. ( What do those numbers mean? What causes congenital Nystagmus? Nystagmus is not the result of something the parent did or failed to do. It can be hereditary but often it isn't. It can be the result of another condition (which is why, when the symptoms of Nystagmus are noted, the parents should see a doctor) or it can appear alone. Sometimes a cause can be attached to it, but for the most part, the reason for it remains unknown. Has Nystagmus been linked to Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Eye movements - uncontrollable
Overview Treatment Definition:
Uncontrollable eye movements are involuntary, rapid, and repetitive movement of the eyes.
Alternative Names: Back and forth eye movements; Horizontal nystagmus; Involuntary oscillation of the eye(s); Nystagmus; Rapid eye movements from side to side; Rotary nystagmus; Side to side movements of the eyes; Uncontrolled eye movements; Vertical nystagmus
Considerations: Nystagmus refers to rapid involuntary movements of the eyes that may be from side to side (horizontal nystagmus), up and down (vertical nystagmus) or rotary. Depending on the cause, these movements may be in both eyes together or in just one eye. The term "dancing eyes" has been used in regional dialect to describe nystagmus. The abnormal eye movements of nystagmus are caused by abnormalities of function in the areas of the brain that controls eye movements, but the exact nature of these disorders is often poorly understood. Nystagmus may be either congenital (present at birth) or may be caused by disease or injury later in life.

Nystagmus TYPES CAUSES DIAGNOSIS TREATMENT ... DIET AND NYSTAGMUS Nystagmus is characterized by an involuntary movement of the eyes, which may reduce vision or be associated with other, more serious, conditions that limit vision. Most frequently it is composed of a mixture of slow and fast movements of the eyes. Nystagmus can occur normally, such as when tracking a visual pattern. Nystagmus may also be abnormal, usually in situations where one would want the eyes to be still, but they are in motion. The involuntary eye movements of nystagmus are caused by abnormal function in the areas of the brain that control eye movements. The exact nature of these disorders is poorly understood. Muscles of the eye T here are six muscles that control the movement of each eye ball. The image shows the six muscles of the right eye. TYPES Nystagmus may be either congenital (present at birth) or may be acquired (caused by disease or injury later in life).
  • Congenital Nystagmus- It is the most common. It is usually mild, does not change in severity, and is not associated with any other disorder. Affected people are not aware of the eye movements, although they may be noticed by a careful observer. If the movements are of large amplitude, visual acuity (sharpness of vision) may be less than 20/20. Surgery may improve visual acuity. Acquired Nystagmus A less common cause of nystagmus is disease or injury of the central nervous system. The most common cause of acquired nystagmus is head injury from motor vehicle accidents in young people. In older people the most common cause is

General Discussion Benign Paroxysmal Positional Nystagmus is a disorder of the vestibular system in the middle ear that causes dizziness due to altered function of the semicircular canals, usually involving the posterior canal but sometimes involving the horizontal canal. The dizziness, which is accompanied by abnormal eye movements or nystagmus, occurs suddenly and without warning; thus, it is "paroxysmal". It is also "positional" because the symptoms increase with certain movements of the head or body. It is the position of the head, rather than the movement, that causes the symptoms. closely observe eyes Tracking objects is a complex activity under normal circumstances, but the complexity is markedly increased during movement of the head. There is a system within the brain located in the superior colliculi which receives information on rotation of the head from the semicircular canals. The superior colliculi then directs eye movements via the extrinsic muscles of the eye to compensate for these head movements. The effects of this system can be seen when it over compensates from prolonged rotation of the body. The semicircular canals become accommodated to the rotation, and when the rotation is halted, the endolymph continues to move, triggering impulses interpreted in the superior colliculi as strong rotational acceleration signals. It therefore directs the compensating jerking of the eyes called nystagmus (from the Greek, meaning to nod). Nystagmus may also be a sign of malfunction in one of the stages of the system responsible for this reflex.

78. VOR Nystagmus Model
the ramp stimulus the eye breaks into nystagmus a sawtooth waveform of quick and slow phases. In Assgn 3N you will model nystagmus, but only for VOR.
http://www.engin.brown.edu/courses/en122/Assgn/Assgn3Nb.htm
Assgn 3N Nystagmus Background: It will be important to keep in mind that vestibular and optokinetic responses attempt to match eye speed with stimulus speed , without much importance as to what the eye is foveating on, if anything (consider VOR in the dark).
Requirements:
(1)Add to your VOR model a nystagmus feature. Make sure the quick phase of nystagmus is about 400 deg/sec.
You will want to study the SR flip flop (latch) under the EXTRAs menu of Simulink.
A SR latch will help add hysteresis to your controller, so the quick phase endures for a radian or so. Notice that when S = R = = logic-low the output Q remains unchanged, and is therefore a memory state of the latch; furthermore S=R=1 is NOT ALLOWED, or the output is "unspecified".
efference copy of eye position, from the integrator in the OMN. (Another case of feedback, this time to create a bang-bang controller.)
The output Q of your SR latch can go to a switch control, with threshold likely 0.5.
The two choices of "data input" for the switch can be the quick and slow phase controls for nystagmus. Let the output of the switch go to the OMN (whose integrator provides eye position information to the relational operators).

    1) NORMAL NYSTAGMUS: There is endpoint nystagmus at the extremes of lateral gaze, opto-kinetic nystagmus when the eyes follow stripes on a rotating drum, nystagmus when stimulating the semicircular canal and voluntary nystagmus, which can only last a few seconds. 2) PATHOLOGICAL NYSTAGMUS: Most commonly it is congenital and of little consequence. It is exaggerated when one eye is occluded. The defect is equal (pendular) in the case of a sensory deficit, and jerky if there is a motor deficit. There is frequently a null point (at which there is minimal or no nystagmus) and patients are usually asymptomatic.
