What are night terrors?
Night terrors are sleep disturbances in which a child may suddenly bolt upright in bed, cry, scream, moan, mumble, and thrash about with his eyes wide open, but without being truly awake. Because he's caught in a sort of a twilight zone between being asleep and being awake, he's unaware of your presence and isn't likely to respond to anything you say or do. In fact, researchers think of night terrors as mysterious glitches in the usually smooth transitions we make each night between sleep stages. As many as 15 percent of children have night terrors, typically beginning in the toddler and preschool years but sometimes starting later and continuing up to adolescence. An episode can last anywhere from two to 40 minutes, and when it's over your child falls back to sleep abruptly with no memory of the incident.

Night terrors, sometimes referred to as confusional arousal, occur in five to 15 per cent of children between the ages of four and six, though they can appear in babies as young as nine months. Technically speaking, they are caused by partial awakenings from non-REM, or non-dream, sleep. A child in this state may cry, whimper, and flail. "He won't look scared, but he'll appear to be confused," says Dr. Richard Ferber, author of Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems (Dorling Kindersley). How are they different from nightmares?
Nightmares occur during rapid eye movement (REM) or dream sleep. A child who has had a nightmare is likely to have a clear idea of what scared him, though before before he is about two, he probably won't be able to articulate his fright. He may also be afraid to fall back asleep, and in the morning, he may remember that he had a bad dream. How long do night terrors last?

Does Bipolar Disorder Affect Dreams?
from Marcia Purse
Part 2: Nightmares and Night Terrors
Nightmares also occur frequently in bipolar disorder. In The Reinterpretation of Dreams , the authors write:
Bipolar patients report bizarre dreams with death and injury themes before their shift to mania (Beauchemin and Hays, 1995). Beauchemin and Hays (1996) found that dreams of bipolar depressed patients have more anxiety than those of unipolar patients. Dreams of bipolar patients, particularly those with rapid cycling, may show evidence of the subsequent shift prior to noticeable affective and behavioral changes (Frayn, 1991).
Bipolar children particularly suffer from nightmares. The

Night (Sleep) Terrors
  • Night terrors are benign (not harmful) sleep behavior, but they may cause a lot of anxiety for parents. Night terrors are fairly common in children. Night terrors and sleepwalking often run in families. Most children outgrow night terrors by adolescence. Night terrors occur during the stage of sleep called slow wave or deep sleep. This sleep stage is most frequent in the early part (first third) of the night. Although a child having a night terror may appear awake, she is really asleep. Night terrors in children are not a sign of psychological problems. However, there are certain things, like stress, that make it more likely for someone who is prone to night terrors to have an episode. These include:
not getting enough sleep an irregular sleep schedule fever, illness some medications sleeping with a full bladder sleeping in a different environment a noisy sleeping environment
A child having a night terror may have her eyes open, but usually appears very agitated, frightened and even panicked, as well as confused and dazed during an episode. A child will often cry out or scream at the beginning of the night terror and may mumble or give inappropriate answers to questions. A child having a night terror is often clumsy and may flail around, push a parent away, or behave in other strange ways.
