According to the study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, "ambient light exposure during sleep at night in the first two years" of a child's life greatly increase that child's chances of developing myopia (nearsightedness.) This study showed that nearly half of the children who had slept in a fully lit room had become myopic later in childhood. Night terrors a few times a month, from my understanding, is not too uncommon, though they can be usually linked to such things as bad "sleep hygiene" as it's called (lack of consistent bedtime, bedtime ritual, no or few naps during the day, etc.) or emotional problems (separation anxiety, recent large changes in life such as a move, etc.) But having them every night, even several times a night, points to something more serious. And that you had such serious sleepwalking and nightmares yourself that you had a sleep study done might point to a possible genetic link as well.
Night terrors can be a trying thing. My 3 year old stepdaughter has them, and we're currently trying to track down what might be the cause. There are a number of good articles on night terrors that will give more information (such as http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/sleep.htm,) but ultimately I think you should contact your daughter's pediatrician and have a chat very soon.
I would recommend you take a look at all of her sleep patterns. Does she sleep walk, sleep talk, snore, have other difficulty breathing, seem to stop breathing for moments at a time (occasionally or a lot,) be sleepy during the day? Any of these, or a combination, could point to possible sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea. Also, keep a sleep journal for her of when she naps during the day and sleeps at night, for how long, and what happened during them. Jot all of it down so you can tell the pediatrician what does and doesn't happen during her sleep cycles.

While in the marketplace three Arab men attack her because she is dressed provocatively, but a stranger, Sabina, saves her. The sophisticated Sabina introduces her to the handsome Sheik Mahmoud and Genie allows him to seduce her. She is then introduced to Paul Chevalier, a weird puppeteer who claims to be a descendant of the Marquis de Sade, who draws her into a series of sadomasochistic sexual games. At the same time those that try to warn her and flee from the games, saying that Chevalier and the others are a cult, start turning up murdered. Tobe Hooper once had a hit with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). But since then Hooper’s career has been a rather ragged one - and in the eyes of some of his more severe critics has been a single downward slide ever since Texas Chain Saw . One doesn’t entirely agree with this as Hooper has made some worthwhile efforts - the slasher movie The Funhouse Poltergeist (1982) under Spielberg, the entertaining

Night terrors are rare, but normal for children
Tuesday, December 09, 2003 By Mackenzie Carpenter, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Carla Weidman still remembers when her pre-school son had his first bout with night terrors. "It was very frightening," said the Children's Hospital psychologist. "It happened in the early part of the night, before we went to bed. He was screaming and crying and yelling at all sorts of creatures in his room, pushing them away, pushing us away." Then, as now, there was very little Weidman could do. "You can't wake them up. They're in a very deep sleep. All we could do was stay with him." Night terrors are, in fact, more terrifying to parents than children, say experts. While relatively uncommon an estimated 4 percent of all children are said to suffer from them they are also considered developmentally normal. Children eventually will grow out of the condition, experts say. Unlike nightmares, which occur later in the night, night terrors surface during the first two hours or so of the night, during deep sleep. Your child may have her eyes open, and her pupils may look larger than normal but she's not awake. If you do manage to wake your child, she probably won't remember the dream, but it's important to have the lights on so she can adjust quickly to the real world around her. Night terrors have no story line, but usually involve fairly primitive images, such as being chased by monsters or spiders. Sometimes the child may try to get out of bed and escape, so it's important to take steps to protect the child by installing safety gates if she is prone to night terrors.

Each night, Bobbi Dempsey waits for her son’s screams to pierce the dullness of sleep. Dempsey’s son has a sleeping disorder that plagues more than 200,000 kids: night terrors. When Sleep Turns Scary
Night terrors strike more than one-third of children in the United States, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Sleep Foundation. The disorder is particularly common in boys and usually occurs between the ages of 3 and 7, says Dr. John Tedeschi, chairman of Virtua Health West Jersey’s pediatric department. “The child may be screaming or yelling something unintelligible which only gets worse when parents try to intervene," Dr. Sheldon says. "When parents start asking questions or touching the child, he becomes even more agitated. Later, he won’t even remember it ever happened.” When Brette McWhorter Sember’s toddler daughter woke up screaming, the Clarence, N.Y., mother found her sitting up in bed, terrified and seemingly unaware of her surroundings.

Also in May, Dr. Steven Hyman, the director of the National Institute of Mental Health issued an alert to family practitioners warning them about the use of antidepressants for children with depression who may have a bipolar disorder. "While it can be hard to determine which young patients will become manic," he wrote, " there is a greater likelihood among children who have a family history of bipolar disorder. Family practitoners should be aware of the signs and symptoms of mania so that they can educate families on how to recognize them immediately."
We consider this great progress and we hope this alert will deter the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of many children.
Certainly a groundswell is developing. The Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation continues to welcome over 2,000 visitors a day and now has 15 online support groups. Give yourself a great gift and go over to www.bpkids.org

The Bottom Line Night Terrors are a sleeping disorder and there are real solutions that work.....
I awoke to find her damp warm hands grasping my shirt so tight I nearly choked. Before I could get out of bed and hit the light, she began hitting me furiously. I grabbed her hands and her body began to shake uncontrollably, the harder I tried to control her the harder she fought to get away. Screams pierced the quite evening air and her body fell limp. I sat awake in the dark shaking. What had just happened?
My child has night terrors.
Night terrors are not nightmares, They are characterized as a sudden arousal from slow wave sleep with a piercing scream or cry, accompanied by autonomic (Controlled by the part of the nervous system that regulates motor functions of the heart, lungs, etc.) and behavioral manifestations of intense fear. Also known as Pavor Nocturnus, incubus, severe autonomic discharge, sleep terror.
She will not sleep alone, and is afraid to sleep at all.

Night terrors Night terrors (parasomnias) are the most extreme and dramatic of arousal disorders and the most distressing to witness. A night terror episode can often begin with a loud scream or shout, and can produce signs that suggest extreme terror, such as dilated pupils, rapid breathing, racing heart, sweating and extreme agitation. The victim may jump out of bed and run around the room or even out of the house. It is possible during the course of a night terror episode that the person could hurt themselves or others. Children who experience night terrors do not typically need a medical evaluation. However, medical attention should be sought if these episodes cause potentially dangerous behavior, an extreme household disturbance or excessive sleepiness during the day. Because night terrors are relatively uncommon after childhood, adults suffering from this disorder should consult a physician or sleep specialist.
