      Night terrors
by Robert Steele, MD (see more from this expert) Last night I think my son had a night terror experience. He woke up crying and screaming. We tried to console him, thinking he was either teething or having nightmares. My wife and I just held him as he continued this for about 30 minutes. Did he have a night terror? Is this anything to worry about and can they be prevented?
Night terrors generally occur in children between the ages of three to ten, and are reported to be experienced by about three percent of children. The episode usually occurs within the first couple of hours of going to sleep, during the first sleep cycle. The attack may last for several minutes to half an hour after which the child goes back to sleep and has no memory of the event the next day.

Night Terrors
What is the Definition of Night Terrors?
Sleep terror disorder or " night terrors " is a condition that occurs during stages 3 or 4 of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. It is characterized by repeated episodes of abrupt awakening, usually with a panicky scream, and accompanied by intense anxiety , confusion, agitation, disorientation, unresponsiveness, marked motor movements, and total amnesia concerning the event. top ^
Description of Night Terrors
Night terrors usually occur 1/2 hour to 3 1/2 hours after falling asleep. During these episodes people wake up sweating heavily, their hearts pounding and eyes glazed over, screaming in fear. They are unaware of their surroundings and unresponsive to attempts to comfort them. They may not calm down for 10 or 15 minutes, although they return to sleep quickly once the episode ends. Generally they do not remember what scared them, but rarely a person will retain a vague image of something terrifying. A few children and adults who experience night terrors will sleepwalk during the episode.

"I think my child is having night terrors." It's the middle of the night and you are awakened by your child screaming from his bedroom. You rush in to see what's wrong and you find him sitting up in bed with a blank stare but very agitated. You try to wake him, asking him what is wrong but he doesn't respond, he just keeps screaming. You are scared and don't know what to do. After a few minutes, your child goes back to sleep and in the morning he doesn't remember the episode. Characteristics of night terrors:
  • Your child seems frightened, but cannot be awakened or consoled.
  • Your child may sit up in bed, or walk around the room, screaming or talking senselessly.
  • Your child doesn't acknowledge you, his eyes may be open but he seems to stare right through you.
  • Objects or persons in the room might be mistaken for dangers.

Sleep disturbances, Night terrors are commonly mistaken for nightmares, but there are important differences. A child who wakes from a nightmare may be frightened, but he or she is rarely very disoriented. Some details of nightmares can be recalled, but night terrors are completely forgotten when the child wakes up. Finally, nightmares occur during the dream stage of sleep during the second half of the night, while night terrors seem to occur during the transition stage between the first, deep sleep of the night and the first period of dream sleep. Sleepwalking and sleeptalking also occur at this transition. WHAT HAPPENS DURING NIGHT TERRORS?
    WHAT CAUSES NIGHT TERRORS?
Night terrors are not responses to bad dreams or frightening thoughts. They seem, instead, to be caused by immaturity of some part of the central nervous system. Preschoolers are most likely to have night terrors, but babies under age two may also get them. IS MEDICAL ATTENTION NECESSARY?

Symptoms and causes of night terrors in children, as well as various preventative methods. Is it a nightmare or a night terror?
The BBC reports that 3% of children experience night terrors, most of whom are boys. Studies confirm that night terrors tend to run in families, as do other sleep disorders. These children that are afflicted with night terrors many times act like they are awake, but they are asleep. Night terrors are not nightmares. Nightmares occur during an early stage of sleep and night terrors occur in later stages of the sleep cycle. If your child has been exhibiting strange behavior and extreme fear upon awakening (they only appear awake), they are probably having a night terror. Sleep disorders are a very common occurence in toddlers and young children, so parents should not be alarmed. Night terrors are a common in young children ages 3-5, especially boys. In rare cases, girls and adults can even experience night terrors, but the people usually effected have a strong biological predisposition for night terrors or other sleep disorders. Knowing the causes and signs will arm parents with the knowledge that they need in order to help their children have a restful night's sleep. Talking to the family physician or pediatrician will also shed some light on the problem, and offer some practical solutions. What is a sleep disorder?

    What is a night terror?
A night terror is not the same as a nightmare. A night terror occurs when a child is partially awakened from a very deep sleep. Sleepwalking is also another example of partial arousal from a deep sleep. Night terrors generally happen shortly after a child falls asleep. Sometime during the first fifteen minutes of sleep the body goes into the deep non-REM sleep. This normally lasts around forty-five minutes to two hours.
Night terrors happen during this stage of sleep whereas nightmares occur usually during the second half of the night when the child enters REM sleep. Often the night terror will be worse if the child has been in non-REM sleep for a while. Usually during a night terror a child thrash or scream in her sleep, sometimes she might moan, talk or break out in a sweat. A night terror can last any where from five to forty minutes. Unlike a nightmare, a child will fall right back asleep after the night terror and have no memory of what happened. Night terrors can occur in children as young as six months but normally happen in children age three to five.

    Q. My seven-year-old son has always had the habit of sleepwalking. For the past four or five months, however, he often wakes up screaming about two hours after falling asleep. He calls out things like "I don't want to!" These episodes happen about three times a week and he never remembers them the next day. Is he having night terrors? What causes night terrors and how can we help him? A. More Sleep Advice
  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Kids sleeping with parents
  • Sleep disturbances It does sound like night terrors are contributing to the recent interruptions of sleep in your household. Night terrors are related to an abrupt change during the transition from one specific sleep stage to the next. Children usually experience night terrors in the first hour or two after falling asleep, and the terror episode may last up to 15 minutes or so. During night terrors, children commonly scream and jump right up from lying in bed. They may seem agitated, confused, and cry inconsolably. They may breathe more quickly, their heart may beat faster, and they often sweat. There can be a glassy-eyed stare as they are in REM (rapid eye movement) deep sleep and not actually awake. Be reassuring! There isn't much you can do other than protect your son from hurting himself. Once things settle down, he should usually fall right back to sleep and not remember what happened in the morning. This makes sense because he's never actually awake during the episode.
