Related NINDS Publications and Information What is Kleine-Levin Syndrome? Kleine-Levin syndrome is a rare disorder that causes recurring periods of excessive drowsiness and sleep (up to 20 hours per day). Symptoms, which may last for days to weeks, include excessive food intake, irritability, disorientation, lack of energy, and hypersensitivity to noise. Some patients may also experience hallucinations and an abnormally uninhibited sex drive. Affected persons are normal between episodes, although depression and amnesia may be noted temporarily after an attack. It may be weeks or more before symptoms reappear. Onset is typically around adolescence to the late teens. The disorder is 4 times more common in males than in females. Symptoms may be related to malfunction of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that governs appetite and sleep.

Welcome!
The primary focus of this site is to help owners of dogs with a neurologically based behavioral disorder such as Compulsive Tail Chasing learn more about these issues and find out where they need to go to get help. We also provide a support group hosted by Yahoo! Groups where people can share their experiences with other owners of affected dogs. Another goal of this site is to provide details on the Bull Terrier Compulsive Tail Chasing study coordinated by Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli at Tufts. Dr. Moon-Fanelli, who has spent over a decade studying spinning and helping affected dogs, has made available to us all the necessary forms and information for those interested in participating in the study. The human brain is probably the most complex structure that nature ever produced. 100 billion neurons and 10 times as many glia cells build up an intricate network that accomplishes extraordinary tasks, such as sensation, learning and memory. All these functions are in the last instance conducted by molecules. A modern molecular physiology investigates the molecules' function and their role in the context of the brains' network systems. The application of insights from this research field to the therapy and diagnostic of neuronal diseases is one of the great challenges of this century. The CMPB pursues this goal with an interdisciplinary research program.
