Strep Throat Neurological Disorders
Air Date: 07/06/2005 Reported by: Dr. Deanna Lites Producer: Dana Paravati Email this story to a friend Strep throat can leave you feeling pretty crummy with a sore throat and fever. After a few days and maybe some antibiotics, it should go away and you'll be fine. Or at least that's the case for most of us. According to a new study, the problems may be just beginning. A new study shows that some kids can develop neurological disorders after a strep infection. Strep throat is a very common infection. While most children get over a strep infection without any problems, a study in The Journal Pediatrics finds that for a small group of kids that's not the case.

Additional resources from MEDLINEplus What is Muscular Dystrophy? The muscular dystrophies (MD) are a group of genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. There are many forms of muscular dystrophy, some noticeable at birth (congenital muscular dystrophy), others in adolescence (Becker MD), but the 3 most common types are Duchenne, facioscapulohumeral, and myotonic. These three types differ in terms of pattern of inheritance, age of onset, rate of progression, and distribution of weakness. Duchenne MD primarily affects boys and is the result of mutations in the gene that regulates dystrophin - a protein involved in maintaining the integrity of muscle fiber. Onset is between 3-5 years and progresses rapidly. Most boys become unable to walk at 12, and by 20 have to use a respirator to breathe.

NEUROMUSCULAR conditions are a major health problem in the Australian community. There are many hundreds of categories of neuromuscular disease and the social and economic cost to our community is enormous.
The objective of the Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute is to significantly improve the health and welfare of the Australian community by searching for and pioneering the introduction of methods of prevention and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. In particular conditions in which it has special expertise the Institute seeks to provide a focal point for the integration of all possible basic and clinical research approaches with ongoing health care in a sympathetic and supportive environment.

Neurological Disorders Topic Index Overview of the Nervous System Anatomy of the Brain Diagnostic Tests ... Online Resources The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates the body's basic functions and activities. It is made up of two major divisions, including the central nervous system (consisting of the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (consisting of all other neural elements). In addition to the brain and spinal cord, principal organs of the nervous system include the eyes, ears, sensory organs of taste, sensory organs of smell, and sensory receptors in the skin, joints, muscles, and other parts of the body. The nervous system is vulnerable to various disorders. Because of its complexity and the high technology used in evaluation and treatment of its disorders, the branches of medicine, physician specialists, and clinical services that manage it are as numerous and varied as the disorders and conditions. Additional resources from MEDLINEplus What is Polymyositis? Is there any treatment? Treatment for polymyositis generally consists of a steroid drug called prednisone. For patients in whom prednisone is not effective, immunosuppressants such as azathioprine and methotrexate may be prescribed. Intravenous immunoglobulin has also helped difficult cases. Physical therapy is usually recommended to avoid muscle atrophy. What is the prognosis?

What is the role of the thymus gland in myasthenia gravis? What are the symptoms of myasthenia gravis? ... Where can I get more information? What is myasthenia gravis? Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease characterized by varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal (voluntary) muscles of the body. The name myasthenia gravis, which is Latin and Greek in origin, literally means "grave muscle weakness." With current therapies, however, most cases of myasthenia gravis are not as "grave" as the name implies. In fact, for the majority of individuals with myasthenia gravis, life expectancy is not lessened by the disorder. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Certain muscles such as those that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, chewing, talking, and swallowing are often, but not always, involved in the disorder. The muscles that control breathing and neck and limb movements may also be affected.
