Rehabilitation for Neurological Disorders
What conditions may benefit from neurological rehabilitation?
The nervous system is vulnerable to various disorders. It can be damaged by injuries, infections, degeneration, structural defects, and tumors, as well as disorders in the circulatory system. Disorders of the nervous system, which may be helped by physical medicine and rehabilitation, may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • vascular disorders - stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage and hematoma, and extradural hemorrhage infections - meningitis, encephalitis, polio, and epidural abscess structural, trauma, or neuromuscular disorders functional disorders - headache, seizure disorder, dizziness, and neuralgia degenerative disorders - Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's chorea, and Alzheimer's disease
The neurological rehabilitation team:
Neurological rehabilitation programs can be conducted while a person is a hospital inpatient, or on an outpatient basis. The neurological rehabilitation team revolves around the patient and family. The team helps set short- and long-term treatment goals for recovery and is made up of many skilled professionals, including the following:
  • neurologist/neurosurgeon orthopaedist/orthopaedic surgeon physiatrist internist rehabilitation nurse dietitian physical therapist occupational therapist speech therapist/language therapist psychologist/psychiatrist

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD)-also called spinocerebellar ataxia type 3-is a rare hereditary ataxia. (Ataxia is a general term meaning lack of muscle control.) The disease is characterized by clumsiness and weakness in the arms and legs, spasticity, a staggering lurching gait easily mistaken for drunkenness, difficulty with speech and swallowing, involuntary eye movements, double vision, and frequent urination. Some patients have dystonia (sustained muscle contractions that cause twisting of the body and limbs, repetitive movements, abnormal postures, and/or rigidity) or symptoms similar to those of Parkinson's disease. Others have twitching of the face or tongue, or peculiar bulging eyes.

Treatment of Paraneoplastic Neurological Disorders at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
(Synonyms: cerebellar degeneration, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, limbic encephalitis, myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic disorder, stiff-man syndrome) Patients who have cancer can develop problems with the brain, spinal cord or nerves, even though their cancer is small and has not spread to the nervous system. These "paraneoplastic neurological disorders" are uncommon and usually appear in patients even before their cancer is diagnosed. In fact, the cancer can be extremely difficult to find. It is thought that the neurological problems occur when the body's immune system becomes activated to fight the cancer cells but accidentally attacks the brain or nerves as well. The most common cancers are lung, breast and ovary. Patients who have these disorders often have abnormal antibodies in their blood or spinal fluid, and tests for these antibodies help to make the diagnosis. Doctors at Mayo Clinic have been interested in paraneoplastic neurological disorders for over 30 years and have published many articles on this topic. In fact, many paraneoplastic syndromes and paraneoplastic antibody tests were first discovered at Mayo Clinic.

Is there any treatment? What is the prognosis? What research is being done? ... Related NINDS Publications and Information What is Batten Disease? Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. In some cases, the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling. Symptoms of Batten disease are linked to a buildup of substances called lipopigments in the body's tissues. Lipopigments are made up of fats and proteins. Because vision loss is often an early sign, Batten disease may be first suspected during an eye exam. Often, an eye specialist or other physician may refer the child to a neurologist. Diagnostic tests for Batten disease include blood or urine tests, skin or tissue sampling, an electroencephalogram (EEG), electrical studies of the eyes, and brain scans.

Is there any treatment? What is the prognosis? What research is being done? ... Organizations What is Von Hippel-Lindau Disease (VHL)? Is there any treatment? Treatment for VHL varies according to the location and size of the tumor and its associated cyst. In general, the objective of treatment is to treat the growths when they are causing symptoms but while they are still small so that they do not cause permanent problems by putting pressure on the brain or spine, blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the nervous system, or impairing vision. Treatment of most cases of VHL usually involves surgery to remove the tumors before they become harmful. Certain tumors can be treated with focused high-dose irradiation. Individuals with VHL need careful monitoring by a physician and/or medical team familiar with the disorder.
