Institute of Medicine report on thimerosal-containing vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders This information is adapted from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
On October 1, 2001, the Institute of Medicine's Immunization Safety Review Committee released its report examining whether or not the use of vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and speech or language delay. The Committee concluded, "The hyphothesis that thimerosal exposure through the recommended childhood immunization schedule has caused neurodevelopmental disorders is not supported by clinical or experimental evidence." However, the Committee also acknowledged that the epidemiological evidence was inadequate to either accept or reject a causal relationship.

NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS The term neurodevelopmental disorder is fairly new in developmental medicine and related fields. It refers to a group of difficulties wherein there are gaps, delays or variations in the way a child’s brain develops. It can be caused by genetic, environmental, or unspecified reasons, many of which are not yet known. We do know however that these dysfunctions often interfere with learning, behavior and adaptability across environments. Neurodevelopmental problems affect one out of every 20 children.
Because of the brain disruption which is at the root of all neurodevelopmental disorder s , there are several common features across the variety of disorders in this group. Some of these include difficulties with motor development, sensory integration difficulties, speech and language delays and a range of cognitive difficulties including learning disabilities, poor organizational skills, poor self regulation and behavioral difficulties.
The types of problems are numerous and wide-ranging. For a listing of known

Exposure to such substances has been associated with developmental disabilities in the form of physical, cognitive, sensory and speech impairments, including in particular learning disabilities and intellectual retardation. Prevalence rates are up to about 10% in certain populations. When incurred early in life such developmental effects are likely to be permanent. Children's intellectual potential at risk. Lead continues to affect children's brains in parts of Europe, putting their development at risk. New research being carried out by WHO and the University of Udine (Italy) focuses on the burden of disease in children caused by chemicals and other environmental factors, such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, water and injuries. Early findings are released on the occasion of the final negotiations with countries prior to the Budapest Conference

The concept of an unknown brain legion is a hypothetical construct that has been supported by evidence such as the latitude effect, which indicates that individuals who live at higher latitudes show an increased risk for developing more malignant forms of schizophrenia . The prenatal environment and gestation period may also play an important role. The seasonality effect describes findings that births occurring in late winter or early spring are associated with a higher risk for developing schizophrenia, especially when temperatures were very low the previous fall. Both the latitude effect and the seasonality effect, however, may point to the mother having contacted some viral infection, or developed some autoimmune response. Support for this theory can also be drawn from the evidence that the influenza epidemic of 1957 was associated with an increased rate of schizophrenia. Also, in times of severe food shortage, such as during the

It is clear that the results of the present study, mandate that additional research should be undertaken, no only for autism, but other childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, by evaluating childhood mercury-associated exposures, especially from thimerosal-containing childhood vaccines."

However, there are limited data examining the effects of low-dose, intermittent mercury exposure, for example, when infants are immunized with thimerosal-containing vaccines. Currently, the only thimerosal-containing vaccine in routine use in the infant immunization schedules of some Canadian jurisdictions is hepatitis B vaccine. In a statement released in December 1999 , Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommended no change to existing infant immunization programs for three reasons: absence of exposure (in eight provinces), or very low cumulative exposure of Canadian infants to vaccine-derived thimerosal (in two provinces and both territories where thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccine was, at that time, used in

The usefulness of Essential Fatty Acids and micronutrient supplementation in neurodevelopmental Disorders. Jacques Duff. MAPS; MAAAPB; AMACNEM; MASNR Presented at the Australian Society for Neuronal Regulation Seminar, Sydney 2001. Of all the fatty acids found in foods, Omega 6, Linoleic acid (LA) and Omega 3, Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) cannot be manufactured by the body. These are called Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) since they must be present in the diet. The liver converts ALA into the long chain Omega 3 fatty acid, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega 6 essential fatty acids undergo a similar conversion. The balance of these two EFAs in our diet and cells is essential for the maintenance of optimum cell wall (membrane) structures. These long chain EFAs are necessary for laying out optimum myelin sheath on brain neurons, and they play a major role in cell membranes of the brain and the retina, as well as lowering blood plasma triglycerides and cholesterol levels. They also play an essential role in all cells, as they are an integral part of their protective membrane . Consequently deficits in these essential nutrients can lead to cellular malnutrition and "leaky" cell membranes that may allow antigens into the cell body.
