Abstract

References Prenatal exposure to alcohol is one of the leading preventable causes of birth defects, mental retardation, and neurodevelopmental disorders. In 1973, a cluster of birth defects resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure was recognized as a clinical entity called fetal alcohol syndrome . More recently, alcohol exposure in utero has been linked to a variety of other neurodevelopmental problems, and the terms alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder and alcohol-related birth defects have been proposed to identify infants so affected. This statement is an update of a previous

Neurodevelopmental Disorders Branch
(B2-ND)
The Neurodevelopmental Disorders Branch supports research leading to a fuller understanding of childhood psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and autistic spectrum disorders, as well as development of more efficacious prevention and treatment strategies for these disorders. Also supported is research on human neurodevelopment and on basic biobehavioral processes involved in these disorders, such as attentional and perceptual processing, executive function, inhibitory controls (e.g., sensory gating), social cognition and communication, and affiliative behaviors.

Introduction: Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children Mental Retardation
Emerging Issues: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children
Researchers estimate that between 3 and 8 percent of the babies born in the United States each year will be affected by neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder or mental retardation. Studies also have found that childhood exposure to lead contributes to attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder and hyperactivity and distractibility; increases the likelihood of dropping out of high school, having a reading disability, lower vocabulary, and lower class standing in high school; and increases the risk for antisocial and delinquent behavior.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of genetics and cognitive and behavioral measures in addition to understanding elements of neuroimaging and neuroanatomy
Course Description
There will be 4 lectures, each 2.5 hours:
1) Organic causes of autism: This course will review known genetic or medical causes of autism and will describe gene, brain, and behavioral relationships related to these causes. We will review the medical workup of children who present with autism and what is known about biological markers and environmental toxicology. Treatment issues will be addressed.
2) X-linked mental retardation including fragile X syndrome and FXTAS: New genes associated with X-linked mental retardation and their neurobiology will be presented. Overlap and commonalities of function will be emphasized. Fragile X syndrome and the fragile X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) will be detailed including gene, brain, behavior relationships and treatment issues.
3) Microdeletion syndromes, fetal alcohol syndrome and sex chromosomal disorders: The behavioral and cognitive phenotypes and molecular-clinical correlations in Williams syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome, Smith Magenis syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman syndrome and sex chromosomal disorders will be described. Commonalities in molecular mechanisms will be emphasized. Fetal alcohol syndrome will also be reviewed as a model of environmental toxicity leading to mental retardation.

Neurodevelopmental disorders
The WHO states that the developing nervous system is particularly vulnerable very early in life to damaging effects of exposure to specific contaminants such as lead, methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A child can absorb as much as 50% of the lead present in food, while an adult takes up only 10% (United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) estimates in 1986). Exposure to such substances has been associated with developmental disabilities in the form of physical, cognitive, sensory and speech impairments, including in particular learning disabilities and intellectual retardation. The European Commission also set up a Technical Working Group looking into neurodevelopmental disorders which made recommendations for various form of action to be taken into consideration.
US research shows large range of jobs tied to degenerative brain disease
A study published in the July issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine shows that a variety of jobs are associated with an increased risk of death from several forms of brain degeneration, namely Alzheimer Parkinson
Many of the associations had been seen in earlier research and could potentially be explained by on-the-job exposures to the chemicals that farmers, welders and hairdressers routinely use or (...)

Health concerns
In two companion papers published in the journal NeuroToxicology (Dec. 2004 and Feb. 2005), University of Rochester researchers have identified early environmental risks for , a progressive neurological disorder that affects one in every 100 Americans over age 60.
