  • To understand the basic mechanisms that underlie neuropathic pain
  • To know the epidemiology and clinical features of trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, and postherpetic neuralgia
  • To become familiar with drugs used to treat these three neuralgias
The authors disclose no financial interests in this article. They disclose unlabeled uses of all drugs mentioned for trigeminal neuralgia except carbamazepine and all drugs mentioned for postherpetic neuralgia except topical lidocaine, capsaicin, and gabapentin. Preview : The pain experienced by patients with trigeminal, occipital, or postherpetic neuralgia is often severe, chronic, and difficult to treat. In this article, Drs Ashkenazi and Levin outline the pathologic mechanisms of pain in these common neuralgias and discuss individually tailored pharmacologic and surgical approaches to their treatment.

Central Nervous System The causes of neuralgias are varied. Chemicals can cause nerve irritation. Inflammation, trauma (including surgery), compression by adjacent structures (tumors or inflamed tissues), and infections can all lead to neuralgias. In many cases, however, the cause is unknown or unidentifiable. Neuralgias are most common in elderly persons, but they can occur at any age.

Alternate Names : Nerve Pain, Postherpetic Neuralgia Neuralgias Prognosis (Expectations) Most neuralgias are not life-threatening and do not indicate other life-threatening disorders. However, pain can be severe and in some cases, incapacitating. For severe pain, be sure to see a pain specialist so that all options for treatment can be explored. Most neuralgias will respond to treatment. Attacks of pain are usually episodic (occurring in intervals, alternating with relatively pain-free periods of time). However, attacks may become more frequent in some patients as they age.

Dental Disorders
Related Disorders Trigeminal neuralgia is probably the best known of the very rare and painful conditions affecting the cranial nerves. As a group, these conditions are known as facial neuralgias. These disorders cause facial and intra-oral (inside the mouth) pain ranging from mild burning sensations to incapacitating lightning bolts of excruciating pain. No one knows with certainty what causes these conditions. In the case of trigeminal neuralgia, some suspect compression of the trigeminal nerve by a vein or artery. In some cases, physical injury causes the condition. In rare cases, tumors or multiple sclerosis can cause nerve damage resulting in facial neuralgia pain. Treating pain caused by nerve damage can be very challenging. Common pain medications usually have no effect on this type of pain. In the following sections we discuss both facial and other cranial neuralgias along with other conditions that involve nerve damage or in which facial neuralgias are a complication. It is our hope that by examining these conditions and their treatments we might find something in common that could be of benefit. At the very least, people with similar conditions can share different strategies for dealing with pain from nerve disorders.

Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Pains which follow the paths of specific nerves.
Alternative Names: Nerve pain; Postherpetic neuralgia
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The causes of neuralgias are varied.
Trigeminal neuralgia
is the most common form of neuralgia. It affects the main sensory nerve of the face, the trigeminal nerve ("trigeminal" literally means "three origins", referring to the division of the nerve into three branches). This condition involves sudden and short attacks of severe pain on one side of the face, along one of the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve. The pain attacks may be severe enough to cause a facial grimace, which is classically referred to as a painful tic (tic douloureux).

Neuralgias
Informaci³n general Sntomas Tratamiento Prevenci³n Definici³n:
