Cincinnati 29, Ohio. Recent experience at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital with bilateral nephroblastoma (Wilms' tumor) has led us to review the literature, as well as the necropsy material available, and to re-evaluate more critically the current methods of management. The purpose of this report is threefold: 1) to report our experience with bilateral nephroblastomas; 2) to emphasize that this is not necessarily an incurable condition; 3) to make specific recommendations concerning the surgical procedures. The three cases herein

Wilms' tumor
Definition: Wilms' tumor is a cancerous tumor of the kidney that occurs in children.
Alternative Names: Nephroblastoma; Kidney tumor
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Wilms' tumor is one of the most common tumors of the abdomen in children and the most common type of kidney tumor. The exact cause of tumor formation in most children is unknown. It is associated with certain birth defects including urinary tract abnormalities, absence of the iris (aniridia), and hemihypertrophy (enlargement of one side of the body). It is more common among some siblings and twins, which suggests a possible genetic cause. The tumor may become quite large, but usually remains encapsulated (self-enclosed). It may spread to other body tissues, especially the lungs.
The disease is estimated to occur in about 1 out of 200,000 to 250,000 children. The peak time of occurrence is at 3 years old, and Wilms' tumor is rare after the age of 8 years.

Nephroblastoma overexpressed gene NOV ) codes for a growth factor that induces protein tyrosine phosphorylation. NOV nephroblastoma overexpressed gene ) is a member of the CCN ( connective tissue growth factor CTGF NOV ) family of proteins.
These proteins are cysteine-rich and are noted for having growth-regulatory functions.
We have isolated the rat NOV gene, and the DNA sequence shares 90% identity with the mouse and 80% identity with the human sequences.
The rat NOV gene was expressed in all rat tissues examined, including brain, lung, heart, kidney, liver, spleen, thymus and skeletal muscle.
Higher levels of rat NOV mRNA were seen in the brain, lung and skeletal muscle compared to the other tissues.
Examination of NOV expression in various human cell lines revealed that NOV was expressed in U87, 293, T98G, SK-N-MC and Hs683 but not in HepG2, HL60, THP1 and Jurkat.
The human NOV gene was transfected into 293 cells and the expressed protein purified.
