Yesterday I decided to spend the day was resting on my screen porch while doing my first weekend of the Cornell University winter bird count, since I had gotten up at 5:00 A.M. that morning to see the Leonids. I decided to read my new addition of Living Bird which featured an article on Mycoplasmal Conjunctivitis in House Finches. While I was reading the article a house finch came to my tube feeder. As I put the binoculars on it I noticed an infected eye. The article I was reading mainly focused on surveys done between 1994 and 1997. I had several infected finches in 1996. I didn't see many after that until this year. About a month ago the numbers at my feeders started to decline again. I was wondering if this disease was still prevalent in the Carolinas. I have not heard much about it in several years. As anyone else seen diseased finches recently? Linda Sharp Greenville, SC nljsharp@worldnet.att.net

Department of Farm Animal Health and Resource Management, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina 27606, USA Abstract: A field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of conjunctivitis, and later Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infections, in house finches ( Carpodacus mexicanus ) from Mercer County, New Jersey (USA). We captured and examined 1597 individuals between November 1994 and August 1999. Clinical conjunctivitis (eyelid or conjunctival swelling, erythema, discharge) was observed in 11% (n = 183) of the birds examined. Monthly conjunctivitis prevalence ranged from 0% to 43% during the study. Conjunctivitis in house finches exhibited marked seasonal fluctuation, with peak disease prevalence during winter months, and lower disease prevalence during the breeding season (March through August). During the peak of the breeding seasons (April through June), disease was most prevalent in males not in breeding condition compared to males in breeding condition ( p p Key words: Carpodacus mexicanus , Conjunctivitis, Epidemiology, House finch, Mycoplasma gallisepticum Introduction

Title Study of Mycoplasmal Infections in Gulf War Veterans Research Focus: Miscellaneous Research Type: Epidemiology/Clinical Research Agency DoD Study Location Walter Reed Army MC Study Start Date 10/10/95 Estimated Completion Date 8/30/97 Project Status Ongoing DoD-47 Summary OVERALL PROJECT OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to find evidence for mycoplasmal infections in symptomatic Operation Desert Storm veterans, by comparing the rate of seroconversion in symptomatic veterans as compared to healthy Gulf veterans and by culturing for Mycoplasma organisms in symptomatic and healthy Gulf veterans. SPECIFIC AIMS: See objectives. METHODOLOGY: This study has two parts: (1) Sera from 200 symptomatic Gulf veterans and 200 healthy Gulf veterans, stored in the U.S. Armed Forces HIV Repository are used. Sera prior to and after deployment to South West Asia are tested for antibody to M. fermentans, M. genitalium, and M. penetrans. (2) Blood, urine, oropharyngeal, and rectal samples in 100 consecutive veterans undergoing evaluation at WRAMC and 100 asymptomatic veterans are tested for evidence of mycoplasmal infection by culture, serology and PCR. EXPECTED PRODUCTS (MILESTONES): August 1996 - Initial Part One results; March 1997 - Addendum Part One results; August 1997 - Part Two complete.

Project Summary
Title:
Testing for mycoplasmal infection replicability of nucleoprotein gene tracking and forensic polymerase chain reaction Synopsis: This study seeks to determine the reliability of three tests use for Mycoplasmal infection, which was postulated as a possible cause of unexplained illnesses in Gulf War Veterans. Overall Project Objective: To determine the reliability of three molecular biology-based tests for Mycoplasma fermentans (incognitus strain) in human pure blood mononuclear cells. These tests include 1) "usual" polymerase chain reaction procedure (UPCR), Status/Results to Date: The analyses have been completed, and indicate that there is no greater than chance reliability between laboratories and within laboratories, for all three tests. Currently, disagreements among the investigators regarding the interpretation of results remain. An independent group of experts reviewed the protocol, data, results, and a draft manuscript and concluded that additional research should be conducted before these data could be adequately interpreted.
