Lung function impairment following mycoplasmal and other acute pneumonias
LA Laitinen, AK Miettinen, E Kuosma, L Huhtala, and K Lehtomaki We prospectively studied the lung function of 106 consecutive young patients with pneumonia. At the time of hospital admission we observed impaired spirometric function in 48% of the patients. During and following treatment, the frequency of abnormalities in pulmonary function tests decreased rapidly. However, at the 15th day of hospitalization, abnormal ventilatory function was still demonstrated in 21% of the patients. Such prolonged impairment of ventilatory function was significantly more likely to result from pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae than from forms caused by adenovirus or Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Abstract. The aim of the study is to investigate the presence of different mycoplasmal species in blood samples from patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. We previously found that more than 60% of patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Fibromyalgia Syndrome had mycoplasmal blood infections, such as M. fermentans . In this study, patients with chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia syndrome were examined for multiple mycoplasmal infections in their blood. A total of 91 patients diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Fibromyalgia Syndrome and with a positive test for any mycoplasmal infection were investigated for the presence of M. fermentans

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Mycoplasmal infections are associated with several acute and chronic illnesses. Some mycoplasmas can enter a variety of tissues and cells, and cause system-wide or systemic signs and symptoms. METHODS: Patients (14 female, 14 male) diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were investigated for mycoplasmal infections in their blood leucocytes using a forensic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure. Amplification was performed with genus- and species-specific primers, and a specific radiolabelled internal probe was used for Southern hybridization with the PCR product. Patients were investigated for the presence of Mycoplasma spp., and positive cases were further tested for infections with the following species: M. fermentans, M. hominis, M. pneumoniae and M. penetrans. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that a high percentage of RA patients have systemic mycoplasmal infections. Systemic mycoplasmal infections may be an important cofactor in the pathogenesis of RA, and their role needs to be explored further

Project Summary
Title:
Testing for Mycoplasmal Infection Replicability of Nucleoprotein Gene Tracking and Forensic Polymerase Chain Reaction Synopsis: This study seeks to determine the reliability of three tests use for Mycoplasmal infection, which was postulated as a possible cause of unexplained illnesses in Gulf War Veterans. Overall Project Objective: To determine the reliability of three molecular biology-based tests for Mycoplasma fermentans (incognitus strain) in human pure blood mononuclear cells. These tests include 1) "usual" polymerase chain reaction procedure (UPCR), 2) an optimized chelex polymerase chain reaction (OCPCR) procedure, and 3) a nucleoprotein gene tracking (NGT) procedure. Status/Results to Date: The analyses have been completed, and indicate that there is no greater than chance reliability between laboratories and within laboratories, for all three tests. Currently, disagreements among the investigators regarding the interpretation of results remain. An independent group of experts reviewed the protocol, data, results, and a draft manuscript and concluded that additional research should be conducted before these data could be adequately interpreted. Over the last ten years, I have been diagnosed with numerous health conditions. Although doctors tell me they aren’t related, I feel that somehow they are. I would like to know what you think. I have been diagnosed with:
Bronchiectisis – chronic cough and throat clearing. Left lung found to have damage due to “untreated pnemonia” in childhood, or so the doctors surmise. CT scan done in 2002 and bronchoscopy in 1994. Both showed scaring.
Rhemetoid Arthritis – Also diagnosed in 2002 through blood tests (Rheumatoid factor was 126, and ANA was 2.2,)after seeing a neurologist, but now my Rheumatoid factor is normal. Been taking Remicaid treatments every 6 weeks for the past year. Also take sulfasalazine, not methotrexate, neurontin
Severe Degenerative Disk Disease in my neck causing pain down my shoulder and arm, found in CT scan 2002 w/ severe narrowing. Need surgery.

The Topic of This Month Vol.19 No.2(No.216) Mycoplasmal pneumonia Atypical pneumonia is a term contrary in meaning to typical bacterial pneumonia and implicated in the concept of nonbacterial pneumonia, showing a feature of transient pulmonary infiltration in an X-ray photograph of the chest. Although the proportion differs from report to report, usually 30-40% and about 60% of atypical pneumonia cases during an epidemic period are caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae . Adenoviruses or chlamydiae besides M. pneumoniae are also implicated. Mycoplasma is the smallest self-replicating microorganism. The organism shows polymorphism because of the lack of the cell wall and is insensitive to such inhibitors of cell wall synthesis as penicillin and cephem antibiotics. Seven species of Mycoplasma are frequently isolated from human sources, but only one of these species, M. pneumoniae , has proved to be pathogenic, causing upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Pneumonia is evoked in 3-5% of cases of M. pneumoniae

Garth L. Nicolson, Ph.D.
Nancy L. Nicolson, Ph.D. IntroductionThe problem A few of the patients that have some of the multiple chronic symptoms shown in Figure 1 may eventually have their diagnoses linked to chemical exposures in the Persian Gulf, such as oil spills and fires, smoke from military operations, chemicals on clothing, pesticides, chemoprophylactic agents, chemical weapons and others. In some cases, such exposure may have resulted in Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). MCS shares some but certainly not all of the symptoms in Figure 1. In many of the soldiers with GWI the spread of the illness to immediate family members was not consistent with a diagnosis of MCS. The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs found that 77% of the spouses and 65% of the children of GWI patients have developed the same or similar signs and symptoms. Thus we feel that the most appropriate syndrome that characterizes GWI is CFIDS, and this type of GWI/CFIDS is apparently being transmitted to close family members.5 Hypotheses on the origin of Gulf War Illness Mycoplasmal infections in GWI/CFIDS patients Some GWI/CFIDS case reports We consider it quite likely that a large fraction of the Desert Storm veterans suffering from GWI/CFIDS may have been infected with pathogenic mycoplasmas and other possible pathogens (invasive bacteria), and such infections can produce the signs and symptoms in Figure 1, sometimes long after exposure. This would also explain the apparent contagious nature of GWI/CFIDS seen in many veterans, and the appearance of similar GWI/CFIDS symptoms in their immediate family members.

Mycoplasmal Arthritis
The Science
An arthritic form of Mycoplasma pulmonis. It has been suggested that poor cage sanitation and abrasions of the extremities are factors involved in helping the organism to get into the joints. Since the organism appears to be of low virulence, the healthiness immune system of a rat may be a major factor in the outcome of infection. This form of Mycoplasma resides in the pharynx (throat), middle ears, and lungs of rats. Although it is often considered to be the principal agent involved in arthritis in rats, the disease has been rarely reported. The organism is transmitted by direct contact between mother and babies (i.e. placental), by sexual transfer, other animal carriers and can even be passed on to baby rats while travel through the birth canal, but only if the mother is infected with myco. It is also airborne over short distances.
Symptoms
Rats with arthritis will generally limp and move with difficulty due to pain. Affected joints are hyperemic and swollen. Any of the joints in the limbs and vertebrae can be affected.

(Article prepared and published in "Farmers Guide" February 2004)
Enzootic pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a difficult disease to control and has stretched the minds of farmers, veterinarians and academicians for several decades. On its own the mycoplasmal infection can be quite mild causing occasional coughing, depression of growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and lung lesions can be from zero to moderate, affecting about 25% of the lung experimentally. Under today's intensive production systems, the primary infection is frequently invaded by secondary bacterial infections, especially Pasteurella multocida which can lead to bronchopneumonia, acute respiratory signs (difficulty breathing) and even death, with the lung lesions doubling in size upto 50% of the lung. In addition over recent years, with PRRS virus and PMWS (circovirus type 2), the poor pig's lung receives such an overwhelming infection leading to a complete swamping, with 70-80% of the lung with consolidated lesions. Mycoplasmas are immunosuppressive, i.e. they confuse the immune defence system in the lung to stop it destroying them. It takes upto 4 weeks for the lesions to develop; they then consolidate for a further 4 weeks and then progressively heal from 10 weeks, as the pig's own immunity/resistance develops. Normally a respiratory infection (such as the common cold) is cleared within 14 days. This immuno-suppression allows the secondary bacteria and other primary bacteria such as

Garth L. Nicolson, PhD, Marwan Y. Nasralla, PhD, Joerg Haier, MD, PhD, Robert Erwin, MD, Nancy L. Nicolson, PhD, Richard Ngwenya, MD Abstract:
Invasive bacterial infections are associated with several acute and chronic illnesses, including: aerodigestive diseases such as Asthma, Pneumonia, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases; rheumatoid diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA); immunosuppression diseases such as HIV-AIDS; genitourinary infections and chronic fatigue illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) and Gulf War Illnesses (GWI). It is now apparent that such infections could be (a) causative, (b) cofactors or (c) opportunistic agents in a variety of chronic illnesses. Using Forensic Polymerase Chain Reaction we have looked for the presence of one class of invasive infection (mycoplasmal infections) inside blood leukocyte samples from patients with CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), FMS, RA, and GWI. There was a significant difference between symptomatic CFS, FMS, GWI, and RA patients with positive mycoplasmal infections of any species (45-63%) and healthy positive controls (~9%) (P
