The musculoskeletal system is comprised of bones muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other components of joints . The hard outer part of the bone is made up of proteins and a substance called hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite stores most of the body's calcium and is primarily responsible for the strength of bones. Marrow is located in the center of each bone. Blood cells are manufactured within the marrow. Bones come together to form joints. Joints are responsible for the degree and direction of motion.

Pregnancy and reproduction in muscle disorders
Written by Dr. Jane Fenton-May, Associate Specialist in Clinical Genetics, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign with contributions from Prof.KMD Bushby.
Where there is a family history of a muscle disorder both men and women may have a number of concerns when they are considering having children. The potential problems may be different depending on the type of muscle disorder and the sex of the parent. In addition to the concerns outlined in this leaflet there may be more particular genetic issues which should be discussed with the Genetic Specialists in your own locality.

What effect does being pregnant have on muscular dystrophy?
The extra weight associated with being pregnant is generally the main problem for women who have weakness, especially if they are at the stage where they have difficulty walking and frequently trip or fall. Occasionally women may find that they need to use a wheelchair most of the time at the end stage of their pregnancy and this may further aggravate their weakness. Returning to full strength following delivery and the reduction of their weight may be difficult. In addition both men and women will need to consider the problems associated with lifting, carrying and nursing their baby. Remember though that none of these difficulties will be unique, and that someone may well have thought of solutions to them. There are lots of ideas about how to deal with these kinds of issues on other websites.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of inherited muscle disorders that lead to muscle weakness of varying severity. Other inherited muscle disorders include myotonic myopathies, periodic paralysis, and glycogen storage diseases. Glycogen storage diseases are a group of rare inherited disorders in which muscles cannot metabolize sugars normally, so they build up large stores of glycogen (a starch that is formed from sugars). Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophies Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies cause weakness in the muscles closest to the torso. These dystrophies are the most common muscular dystrophies and nearly always occur in boys. On average, 1 of 3,300 boys born has Duchenne dystrophy, whereas on average 1 of 18,000 boys born has Becker muscular dystrophy. The gene defect that causes Duchenne muscular dystrophy is different from the gene defect that causes Becker muscular dystrophy, but both defects involve the same gene. The gene for either of these traits is recessive and is carried on the X chromosome. Therefore, although a female can carry the defective gene, she will not develop the disease because the normal gene on one X chromosome compensates for the gene defect on the other X chromosome. However, any male who receives the defective gene will have the disease, because he has only one X chromosome.
