2. Murmurs Of The Heart
Discussion by Daniel J. Waters, D.O., FCCP on the causes and diagnosing of this disorder.
http://www.mcclinic.com/MCC/murmurs.htm
Murmurs of the Heart A heart murmur is a sound produced as blood flows through the chambers and large blood vessels of the heart during the cardiac cycle of contraction and relaxation. Some murmurs are benign or harmless and are more of a finding than a condition. A benign murmur is not associated with any significant underlying abnormality of the heart or its vessels. Many young people can have benign flow murmurs and still have normal cardiac structure and function. A pathologic heart murmur is one associated with a structural or functional abnormality of the heart. Most murmurs are produced as blood flows past the cardiac valves, which separate the chambers of the heart, or through the valves that lead to the great vessels of the lungs and the systemic circulation. If the flow is excessive or turbulent, a murmur may be manifest. Blood flowing through a tight valve will produce a murmur. Blood that is leaking back across an improperly sealing valve also can cause a murmur. Occasionally, abnormal communications (holes) between chambers of the heart can result in the presence of a murmur. Diagnosing a heart murmur begins with auscultation of (listening to) the heart-usually with a stethoscope. The location, quality, pitch and variation in the sound are all important clues to whether the murmur is benign or pathologic. One of the most useful tests in evaluating a murmur is an echocardiogram. This is a sound wave test that produces a real-time image of the beating heart and is very good in assessing the status and function of the cardiac valves and chambers. Sometimes further studies, such as cardiac catheterization, will be required to further track down the specific abnormality and its significance, and to determine which cases will require treatment.

Often, they are caused by turbulent blood flow through the heart valves. Considerations Return to top A doctor can evaluate heart sounds by listening with a stethoscope. They can be further evaluated with an echocardiogram to see what the exact cause of the murmur is. The heart has four chambers two upper chambers (called atria) and two lower chambers (ventricles). The heart has valves that temporarily close to permit blood flow in only one direction. The valves are located between the atria and ventricles, and between the ventricles and the major arteries from the heart. Normal heart sounds are called S1 and S2. They are the "lubb-dupp" sounds that are thought of as the heartbeat. These sounds are produced when the heart valves close.

What is a heart murmur?
A heart murmur is a noise that the blood makes as it flows through the heart. It's like the noise water makes when it flows through a hose. Heart murmurs are common in children and are usually harmless. Return to top
What is an "innocent" or "functional" heart murmur?
Heart murmurs usually don't mean there is anything wrong with your child's heart. Your doctor may call these murmurs "innocent" or "functional." An innocent murmur is just a noise caused by blood flowing through a normal heart. These noises are commonly heard in children because their hearts are very close to their chest walls. An innocent murmur can get louder or softer depending on your child's heart rate, such as when they're excited or scared. Doctors often hear heart murmurs when they check children who have a fever. Many innocent murmurs become hard to hear as children grow older and most usually go away on their own. Return to top

Although many parents fear the worst when their child is diagnosed with a heart murmur, it's important to know that this diagnosis is actually extremely common. In fact, many kids are found to have a heart murmur at some point during their lives. Most murmurs are not a cause for concern and do not affect the child's health at all. So what, exactly, is a heart murmur? By itself, the term heart murmur isn't a diagnosis of an illness or disorder; but to understand what it does mean, it's important to know how the heart works. The heart is divided into four chambers; two are on the left side of the heart and two are on the right. The blood returning from the body is pumped to the lungs where it's oxygenated, then pumped through the arteries to the rest of the body. After the oxygen has been used, the blood returns to the heart through the veins and is pumped through the lungs again. The word murmur describes a swishing sound made as the blood flows through any of the heart's chambers or valves or even through a hole within the heart. How Are Heart Murmurs Diagnosed?

Interview with Heather Grody and Leisha Hailey.
http://www.lesbiannews.com/2000/00_03.html
The Incredibly True Musical Adventures of the Murmurs By Dian Katz West Hollywood’s hip, artsy Abbey was the perfect backdrop to catch up with the hip, trendy duo known as The Murmurs. Despite their New York beginnings, the band became known as the quintessential all-girl L.A. band, brash, cool and OUT!. Since we last chatted with them, the band has undergone some changes, but Heather Grody and Leisha Hailey are still as fresh and lively as ever—and still finishing each other’s sentences! The two met in acting school in New York and clicked instantly. Leisha hails from Bellevue, Nebraska, outside Omaha; Heather grew up in Brooklyn, Long Island and Florida. They spent their early years together and developed a taste for life on the wild side. Along the way, they discovered they were equally talented as singers, guitarists and writers, and acting school gave way to the acoustic band that eventually became The Murmurs. For the first six or seven years, they paid their dues, touring endlessly, opened for bigger and bigger acts, played bigger venues, including Lilith Fair. Currently, they are working in the studio recording another CD, which is due out this spring.

You know the sound of your heartbeat: lub-dub, lub-dub. In some people, there's an extra noise that the blood makes as it flows through the heart. It sounds sort of like the noise of water flowing through a hose. This sound is called a murmur (say: mer -mer). Most murmurs don't mean anything is wrong. But sometimes they are a sign of a problem with the heart. The Heart and How It Works
The heart is a strong muscle about the size of your fist that pumps blood around the body. It sits inside the chest and is protected by the rib cage. The heart has four different areas, or chambers. These chambers are connected to each other by valves that control how much blood enters each chamber at any one time. The valves open and shut with every beat. As the valves shut to control the flow of blood through the heart, they make the sound you recognize as your heartbeat. Depending on a person's age, the heart beats about 60 to 120 times every minute. Each heartbeat is really two separate sounds: lub-dub, lub-dub. Your heart goes "lub" with the closing of the valves that control blood flow from the upper chambers to the lower chambers. Then, as the valves controlling blood going out of the heart close, your heart goes "dub."
