I remembered that because of embarrassment. I was afraid to tell my parents about the inflammation (swelling of the testicles) at the same time I had mumps. I did not have treatment for the swelling of my testicles due to mumps. Later, the swelling went away about the same time as my mumps. Although I still can produce semen, I am deeply disturbed whether that swelling could have hindered my fertility (i.e., no production of sperm due to the blockage of the sperm channels). Mumps Mumps is one of the commonly acquired viral diseases of childhood and is the most common cause of aseptic meningitis. However, its incidence in developed countries has decline dramatically since the advent of vaccination. A. Properties A member of the paramyxovirus family, closely related to parainfluenza viruses
ss RNA, enveloped virus of helical symmetry.
Single RNA molecule of 16 - 18 kbp, in a helical nucleocapsid in association with the nucleoprotein (NP)
M protein forms the structure which underlies the viral envelope. The HN (haemagglutination and neuraminidase protein) and the F (fusion) protein form the spikes present on the lipid bilayer envelope
only one serotype of the virus exist
significant antigenic cross-reaction occurs with other members of the paramyxovirus genus. B. Epidemiology Mumps is a disease of childhood, the highest incidence occurs in children between 5 - 9 years of age. The disease is less contagious than other childhood diseases such as measles and varicella. According to a recent epidemiological survey in America, 10% of the population had mumps during each of the first 5 years of life, 74% had it by age 10, and 95% by 20 years of age. Mumps is endemic in most urban areas. In temperate zones, a seasonal variation is evident, the highest incidence being around January to May. No such seasonal variation exists in tropical countries. Subclinical infections are common in very young infants (2 - 3 years of age), and the proportion increases with age in adulthood. Up to 90% of infections at the age of 10 - 14 age were associated with symptoms whilst almost all infections are subclinical beyond 60 years of age.

Children become infected with mumps by breathing in small airborne droplets of moisture coughed out by an infected person or by having direct contact with objects contaminated by infected saliva. Mumps is less contagious than measles or chickenpox. In heavily populated areas, it occurs year-round but is most frequent in late winter and early spring. Epidemics may occur when people without immunity are crowded together. Although the infection may occur at any age, most cases occur in children 5 to 15 years old. The infection is unusual in children younger than 2 years. One infection with the mumps virus usually provides lifelong immunity.

Mumps
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Mumps is an infection with a virus that causes swelling of the parotid glands in front of each ear. The parotid glands make saliva. Mumps is caused by the mumps virus, a type of paramyxovirus that spreads from person to person through coughs, sneezes and saliva, as well as through contact with contaminated items and surfaces (used tissues, shared drinking glasses, dirty hands that touched a runny nose). Once the mumps virus enters the body, it passes into the bloodstream and can spread to many different glands and to the brain:

    Mumps
Student Health and Welfare Since 2002 the number of cases of mumps has been increasing in the UK. The increase is being seen in people born between 1982 and 1989. Outbreaks of mumps have been reported in several UK universities and those students at particular risk are those entering university for the first time. In the UK, people born before 1982 are likely to have been infected in childhood and will therefore have lifelong protection. Equally, those born after 1982 that have had mumps will also have lifelong protection. People born after 1992 will have had the opportunity to receive two doses of MMR vaccine.
    Symptoms and effects
Mumps usually presents with swelling of the parotid salivary gland (located at the angle of the jaw, in front of the ears) and a "flu like" illness. It can also cause orchitis (swelling of the testicles), oophoritis (swelling of the ovaries) and can affect the central nervous system causing meningitis or deafness. In addition, mumps can have serious consequences for your studies. If you were to contract mumps you may feel unwell for a number of weeks and you would be asked to stay away from lectures and tutorials and to limit social contact for a minimum of five days.

Mumps vaccinations extended - 26 November UPDATE
Mumps vaccinations will continue at the University for a further two weeks to give students and staff (aged 16-24) the chance to be vaccinated against the disease if they wish. The Primary Care Trust has extended its vaccination programme to try and increase the percentage of students and staff that have been vaccinated and bring an end to the current outbreak of mumps on campus. Medical Centre from 11.00-15.00, on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next two weeks. (30 November, 2, 7 and 9 December). No appointment is necessary. For further information on mumps vaccinations, click here.
Mumps vaccination programme - 12 November
As you may be aware, the University of Bath Medical Centre has had 23 students presenting with mumps; a figure above the average normally expected. The Health Protection Agency and the Department of Health recommend that people aged 16 to 24 who have not received the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR), or have had only one dose, should be offered MMR. Linked to this message is information on mumps and vaccination against mumps prepared by BANES PCT. Please read this to help you decide whether you want to receive the MMR Vaccination. If you still have any questions or concerns, you will be able to discuss them with BANES PCT staff running the vaccination programme prior to deciding whether to go ahead. Staff and students aged 25 and over are advised to approach their own General Practitioner (GP) for further information and advice.

Public Opinion Strategies (Alexandria, Virginia) was commissioned by Merck to conduct a national telephone survey of 600 adults ages 40 and over and 600 children, ages 8 to 12. It is the first national survey to actually question children about their attitudes toward getting shots and to measure their understanding of vaccines and the diseases they prevent. "What's clear is that with the success of our immunization programs, vaccines have reduced the fear of these diseases among adults and even name recognition among children," William Atkinson, M.D., a medical epidemiologist with the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), said today at a press conference releasing the survey findings. Parents believe that vaccines have made it safer for their children, the survey shows. Among adults, concerns about measles, mumps and rubella have definitely diminished over time, since the introduction of a vaccine. Concern over measles, which 74% of adults feel are "life-threatening," dropped a full point, from a mean score of 3.2 on a scale of 5, to 2.2, with 5 being the greatest level of concern.
