These glands are located on either side of the face, below the ears.
Swellings appeared about the earsÂ…. In all cases they disappeared without giving trouble, neither did any of them come to suppuration, as is common in swellings from other causes. They were of a lax, large, diffused character, without inflammation or painÂ… In some instances earlier, and in others later, inflammations with pain seized sometimes one of the testicles, and sometimes both.

free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Accelerating MUMPS Database Integration iWay Software's intelligent MUMPS adapter provides highly efficient access to MUMPS data. The adapter is engineered in the same way as other iWay data adapters, so developers may use ANSI-standard SQL statements to access MUMPS data from any iWay tool. Third-party products can also access the adapter via iWay connectors, including ODBC, OLE DB, JDBC, XML , iWay Business Services (Web services), and others. In addition, data may be integrated with more than 200 other information sources , including other relational and nonrelational databases, transaction systems custom or packaged applications , message-oriented middleware, XML documents, EDI networks, and more. How iWay Intelligent Data Adapters Work Together All iWay Intelligent Adapters are designed for consistent operation within iWay's robust middleware framework, thereby minimizing the skill sets required to use each database and support new projects. Each adapter consists of a communications interface, an SQL translator that manages adapter operations in either SQL or iWay's universal Data Manipulation Language (DML), and a database interface that translates ANSI SQL into native API calls. Multiple iWay adapters running on the same platform can all share communications and translation components for greater efficiency. Highly Optimized for MUMPS The iWay Intelligent Adapter for MUMPS receives ANSI-standard SQL requests and translates them into iWay's universal DML. These DML statements are used to access the target database using native MUMPS API calls to retrieve data targeted in the request. If required, the adapter will generate the appropriate iWay SQL and DML statements to perform cross-database joins with other data sources.

Mumps is caused by a paramyxovirus. This fact sheet covers: the disease and its agent; spread of infection; prevention; surveillance and reporting. The disease and its agent
Mumps is a caused by a paramyxovirus, which is antigenically related to the parainfluenza viruses. Infection with the virus causes fever, headache and inflammation of the parotid glands. It is mainly a childhood disease, with a peak incidence in the group aged 5-9 years. Mumps was common prior to the introduction of vaccination, and was a relatively common cause of viral meningitis. Nerve deafness is one of the most serious, but rare, complications (1 in 500 hospitalised cases) of the disease. About 30 per cent of people with mumps will have only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Spread of infection
Spread of infection is by direct contact with droplets from the sneeze or cough, or by direct contact with saliva, from an infected person. The incubation period for mumps ranges from 12-25 days, but is usually 16-18 days. The infectious period is up to six days before overt parotitis (swelling of the glands) and up to nine days after onset of swelling. Prevention
A vaccine is available for mumps. There is a measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) available in Australia and is given as part of the standard vaccination schedule at 12 months and 10-16 years. Children should be excluded from child care centres for nine days after onset of swelling. (

    Mumps What is mumps?
Mumps is an acute and highly contagious viral illness that usually occurs in childhood. Spread by airborne droplets from the upper respiratory tract, the disease usually takes two to three weeks to appear. Cases of mumps in the US have declined dramatically with the introduction of the mumps vaccine. What are the symptoms of mumps?
Many children have no or very mild symptoms. The following are the most common symptoms of mumps. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
    • mild sickness
discomfort in the salivary glands, which may become swollen and tender
      difficulty chewing
      fever
      headache
pain in salivary glands when eating sour foods
    Complications commonly associated with mumps:
Complications of mumps occur more frequently among adults than children, and may include:
    • meningitis - an inflammation of the membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord. orchitis - inflammation of the testicle. mastitis - inflammation of breast tissue. oophoritis - inflammation of the ovary.

Reported Increase in Mumps Activity in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland
Released: December 13, 2004 The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently monitoring increased mumps activity in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Ireland. In the UK there has been a national rise in the incidence of mumps since 1999, especially among teenagers. From January to September of 2004, 3 756 confirmed cases of mumps were reported and as in recent years, the majority of cases (more than 70%) were among teenagers and young adults (born 1982-1990). In 1999, 372 confirmed cases were reported. In 2002, 495 cases were reported and in 2003, 1 529 cases were reported. The reason for this continuing rise in mumps cases among teenagers and young adults is because this age group was too old to have been offered the combined Measles - Mumps - Rubella (MMR) vaccine when it was introduced in 1988. Most only received the combined Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine. In addition, many were not eligible for a second dose of MMR which was introduced in 1996. In the Republic of Ireland there has been an increase in reports of mumps among teenagers and young adults. Annually, the Republic of Ireland reports approximately 40 cases of mumps. As of November 19th, 2004, 153 cases of mumps were reported. A number of educational institutions are reporting outbreaks. The cases appear to be occurring in individuals who were never immunized or only received one dose of MMR.

    • rejects calls for compulsory childhood immunisation, and
    • supports the abolition of the immunisation target payments system without financially penalising GPs.
Two million children in the world die every year from vaccine-preventable diseases. Immunisation programmes have probably saved more lives than any other public health intervention apart from the provision of clean water.
Measles, mumps and rubella can be serious diseases with potentially fatal consequences. Using single dose vaccines would leave children exposed to the risk of infection for longer periods.

What is mumps? Mumps is an acute viral infection that is spread from person to person. It is a potentially serious disease for children and young adults and is very common in young children not vaccinated against it. Who gets mumps? Mumps usually occurs in school-aged children, teenagers or young adults, although older people may contract the disease. Most infections in children less than two years are subclinical (no apparent symptoms). Mumps is more common in winter and spring. What are the symptoms of infection? Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache and malaise and swollen, tender salivary glands (usually the parotid gland which is located just below the front of the ear). Mumps often gives the appearance of swollen cheeks or jaw. Symptoms of mumps begin to appear 14 to 25 days Symptoms tend to decrease after one week and have usually resolved after 10 days.

MMR is a combination vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles). It is given to children at 12 months and again at 4 years of age. A link between the MMR vaccine and development of bowel inflammation (IBD) and autism has been suggested by some researchers. However, numerous carefully performed studies and reviews have now been done that have found no relationship between MMR vaccine and autism or IBD.
This fact sheet answers the following commonly asked questions. More general information on the MMR vaccine is also available by following the links in Further reading below.

    What is MMR vaccine?
Since the introduction of vaccination against these diseases, measles, mumps and rubella have become rare in Australia. However, it is extremely important that children continue to be immunized because these diseases remain very common in other parts of the world, and even slight decreases in the number of immunized children can result in major epidemics of measles, mumps or rubella (including the congenital rubella syndrome which seriously affects unborn children).

This virus multiplies in the nose, throat, and lymph nodes; salivary glands are most often directly affected. More rarely, the pancreas, reproductive organs, and the brain can be affected. Who gets Mumps? Anyone not previously vaccinated with at least one dose of a mumps containing vaccine on or after the first birthday or who has not developed mumps previously is susceptible. Mumps outbreaks have occurred in settings where large numbers of children or young adults congregate in close contact such as schools, child care centers, military services, colleges, and other institutions. How is Mumps spread? A susceptible person becomes infected with mumps after being exposed to an infected person's respiratory droplets or saliva. What are the symptoms of Mumps? One third of persons have inapparent or no symptoms. For those persons exhibiting symptoms, they may include non-specific signs such as malaise, headache, appetite loss, or low grade fever. More specific symptoms may last about one week and include swelling of the salivary glands, tenderness in the jaw, and earache. How soon do symptoms occur?
