Mumps
Mumps is an acute viral illness characterised by swelling of the parotid glands, which may be unilateral or bilateral. It can cause permanent unilateral deafness at any age. The incubation period is 14-21 days. Before vaccination, mumps was a common cause of viral meningitis. Now the vaccine is given as part of the triple MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine, introduced in 1988, the same year that mumps became a notifiable disease.

Mumps!
I've become yet another statistic in the Bath Mumps epidemic of 2004 . I'm quarantined until next Monday, and this afternoon we had a camera crew from ITV West come round to film some doom-and-gloom footage warning students to get vaccinated. Amusingly the camera man hadn't had Mumps and took suitable precautions to avoid infection. I'm told that the piece will go out on ITV news for the south west at 6pm this evening. Overview However, your odds of contracting mumps aren't very high. Mumps was common until the mumps vaccine was licensed in 1967. Before the vaccine, up to 200,000 cases of mumps occurred each year in the United States. Since then, the number of cases has dropped dramatically, so there are now fewer than 300 cases a year. Mumps is still a common disease in many parts of the world, though, so prevention is important. Signs and symptoms About one-third of people infected with the mumps virus have no signs or symptoms. When signs and symptoms do develop, they usually appear about two to three weeks after exposure to the virus and may include:

Mumps - General Information
Topics A-Z Mumps Reviewed on 17 June 2005
Introduction
Mumps is an acute viral illness transmitted by direct contact with saliva or droplets from the saliva of an infected person. Humans are the only known host of the mumps virus. Mumps is a notifiable disease, which means that a doctor who sees a patient whom they suspect has mumps is required by law to report it.

The illness
Symptoms begin with a headache and fever for a day or two before the disease is characterised by swelling of the parotid glands which may be unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides). However, at least 30% of cases in children have no symptoms. Complications of symptomatic mumps include swelling of the ovaries (oophoritis), swelling of the testes (orchitis), aseptic meningitis and deafness. Cases may have no salivary gland involvement but develop symptoms elsewhere (orchitis, meningitis). Despite common belief there is no firm evidence that orchitis causes sterility. Other symptoms may include pancreatitis, neuritis, arthritis, mastitis, nephritis, thyroiditis and pericarditis. Mumps was the commonest cause of viral meningitis in children prior to 1988, when vaccine was introduced.
