Mumps bei Kindern
(Parotitis epidemica) Dr. Petra Kraml
Dr. Peter Voitl Was ist Mumps?

Parents reassured on vaccine

MMR vaccination can prevent disabling and even fatal diseases
Medical researchers have given parents the strongest reassurance yet that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine will not cause their children to develop autism. And they emphasised that there is no link between bowel disease and the jab. The BBC's Fergus Walsh: "Two major studies have ruled out any link with autism or bowel disease" Experts have also warned if confidence in the vaccine, known as MMR, does not return, new epidemics of childhood diseases could break out in as little as three years. Two new studies published in "The Lancet" on Friday show there is no link between the introduction of the vaccine and the sharp rise in autism diagnosed in children. Doctors and government health experts are now hoping the new findings will convince parents who have shunned the jabs that they are safe. 'Mothers must trust MMR' Professor Brent Taylor, of the Royal Free Medical School in north London, which carried out the research, said it was important mothers began to trust MMR again.

Mumps
(infectious parotitis) What is mumps? Mumps is an acute viral disease characterized by fever, swelling and tenderness of one or more of the salivary glands. Who gets mumps? Although older people may contract the disease, mumps usually occurs in children between the ages of five and 15. Mumps occurs less regularly than other common childhood communicable diseases. The greatest risk of infection occurs among older children. Mumps is more common during winter and spring. How is mumps spread? Mumps is transmitted by direct contact with saliva and discharges from the nose and throat of infected individuals. What are the symptoms of mumps? Symptoms of mumps include fever, swelling and tenderness of one or more of the salivary glands, usually the parotid gland (located just below the front of the ear). Approximately one-third of infected people do not exhibit symptoms. How soon after infection do symptoms occur?

These pages are a work in progress where I would like the opportunity to introduce myself to you. Like most people, I have many different experiences. I am a: Work I have many years' experience working with client server systems. From larger to smaller systems, I have done complete life cycle development. As far as a general direction, I believe that knowledge is useless unless it is shared. To that end, I enjoy listening to the end user as well as help them to ask better questions. Some of the projects that I have completed are:
  • OOP conversion. Part of the time that I was with CSG systems, I was working with a team of programmers. The design of the programs when I started with them was modular. I was the technical lead and principal programmer in the conversion of the code. I used COM/COM+, ADO disconnected recordset (Oracle), and custom library functions to convert the VB based code. Document distribution. The documentation department had a long history of distributing paper on a quarterly basis to describe the newest updates. With the close partnership with the training manager we designed, created, tested, and demonstrated to top management another approach. The change saved the company as well as the clients a huge amount of money. LAN Admin.

In October of 2000, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine completed a 3 million dollar renovation and complete redesign of the exhibits. With nearly 7,000 square feet of exhibit space on two floors, the expanded Museum can better illustrate the medical story of the American Civil War. It is a story of care and healing, courage and devotion amidst the death and destruction of war. It is also a story of major advances that changed medicine forever. Through the dedication, innovation and devotion of Civil War surgeons and medical support staff on both sides of the conflict, the foundation for today's modern military medicine was laid. Their tenacity and compassion to heal stemmed a death rate that could have easily been twice the 620,000. Throughout the exhibits are special blue panels that highlight the military career of Union Private Peleg Bradford. In his own words, Bradford tells us his thoughts on the war, the condition of his regiment and the effect his enlistment had on the family he left behind.
Medical School Education
As the Civil War began, the practice of medicine was emerging from the "heroic era", with its theory of bringing a balance to the humors of the body. Medical practitioners had no knowledge of germ theory or antiseptic practices. Both discoveries were still years away. Over 40 medical schools existed in America before the war, and apprenticeships with established physicians were also common. The usual course of study in a medical school consisted of two terms of six-month lectures, with the second term often being a repeat of the first. Featured objects in this gallery include medical school documents, teaching models, and mid-nineteenth century medical instruments.

IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION - MUMPS
OVERVIEW The Disease
Mumps is a common childhood disease. The most obvious sign of mumps is swelling of the cheeks and jaw, caused by inflammation in the salivary glands. There is usually fever and headache too. But mumps can also cause more serious illness. It can cause deafness. About 1 child in every 10 who gets mumps also gets meningitis (an inflammation of the coverings of the brain and spinal cord). Occasionally the disease also causes encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain itself. Usually, the child recovers without permanent damage. About 1 out of every 4 teenage or adult men who get mumps develops a painful swelling of the testicles. People get mumps through contact with others who are already infected. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking. Before a vaccine was available, nearly every child got mumps. Now the number of cases is much lower. However, children who are not immunized are still very likely to get the disease. Mumps Immunization
Mumps vaccine is usually given together with measles and rubella vaccines in a shot called MMR.
