Multiple System Atrophy guide
Multiple System Atrophy - A brief guide:
Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects adult men and women. MSA is caused by degeneration of nerve cells in specific areas of the brain. This cell degeneration causes problems with movement, balance and automatic functions of the body such as bladder control.
How common is MSA?
Until recently MSA was thought to be a very rare disorder. As we learn more about the condition, it becomes easier to recognise and diagnose. Recent research suggests that MSA affects 5 people per 100,000 in the UK. This means that there may be up to several thousand people with MSA at any time in the UK.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) refers to three slowly progressive related disorders that affect the central and autonomic nervous systems. The disorders are characterized by their foremost symptoms: olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA), which primarily affects balance, coordination, and speech; a parkinsonian form ( striatonigral degeneration ), which can resemble Parkinson's disease because of slow movement and stiff muscles; and a form with predominant autonomic nervous system involvement (formerly

Multiple system atrophy with orthostatic hypotension is the current classification for a neurological disorder that was once called Shy-Drager syndrome. A progressive disorder of the central and autonomic nervous systems, it is characterized by orthostatic hypotension (an excessive drop in blood pressure when standing up) which causes dizziness or fainting. Multiple system atrophy can occur without orthostatic hypotension, but it is rare. Doctors classify the disorder into 3 types: the Parkinsonian-type includes symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as slow movement, stiff muscles, and tremor; the

Multiple system atrophy is a rare neurological disorder characterized by a combination of parkinsonism, cerebellar and pyramidal signs, and autonomic dysfunction. The term "Multiple System Atrophy" is synonymous with striatonigral degeneration (SND) when Parkinsonism predominates, olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) when cerebellar signs predominate, and Shy-Drager syndrome when autonomic failure is dominant. The incidence (new case per 100,000 person years) for ages 50 to 99 years is 3.0 (Bower et al, 1997), or about half as frequent as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) . The mean age of onset is 54. The Parkinsonism of MSA is generally an akinetic rigid syndrome, similar to that of PSP . Rest tremor may occur but is not a predominant feature. Postural instability is common. Parkinsonism is generally the most common initial sign and eventually develops in about 90% of all patients. The cerebellar signs inlude finger-to-nose or heel-shin dysmetria, gait ataxia, intention tremor and nystagmus. Cerebellar signs are the first feature on only about 5% of patients. Cerebellar signs are observed in 50% of cases (Ben-Shlomo et al, 1997). Sporadic OPCA evolves into MSA in roughly 25% of cases within 5 years.

First Mouse Model For Multiple System Atrophy Points To New Treatment Targets For Brain Diseases
Philadelphia, PA - A newly developed animal model for Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) - a collection of neurodegenerative disorders once thought to be three separate diseases - sheds new light on this little-studied brain disease, according to research from investigators at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Related News Stories (February 1, 2001) full story (October 31, 2003) A new mouse model developed by Harvard Medical School researchers and reported in the October 30 Neuron may allow scientists for the first time to spotlight two key proteins in a living animal and ... full story (November 3, 2000) full story (February 21, 2000) full story related stories Related sections: Virginia M.-Y. Lee, PhD, Director of Penn’s Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, and colleagues demonstrated that the mice showed symptoms similar to human MSA. These include an accumulation of a protein called a-synuclein in oligodendrocytes - cells that produce the protective myelin sheath that covers axons. This protein accumulation disables oligodendrocytes, leading to a loss of the sheath on neurons and eventually nerve-cell malfunction and death. The mice also showed slowly progressive problems with their motor skills associated with the nerve-cell damage. Neurons are important in transmitting signals and in maintaining learning and memory.

Multi System Atrophy and My Story was designed to provide a better understanding of this rare disorder. Everyday someone asks me what Multi System Atrophy (or MSA or Multiple System Atrophy) is and it's hard to explain. In my case I started off with symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, which progressed more rapidly as the months went on. I left work on Long Term Disability in late July 2000 after being Diagnosed with PD (Parkinson's Disease) on February 20, 2000. The stage that many Parkinson's patients reach over many years I had managed to "achieve" in a short period of time. Even very few folks with PD understand MSA. Treatment of Multiple System Atrophy
at Mayo Clinic
(Synonyms: Shy-Drager syndrome, Neurologic orthostatic hypotension, Shy-McGee-Drager syndrome, Parkinson's plus syndrome) Multiple system atrophy (MSA), one of several Parkinson's plus syndromes, is a rare disorder, although specialists at Mayo Clinic evaluate about 400 MSA patients each year. Patients receive state-of-the-art treatment and can participate in valuable research studies and clinical trials. Mayo Clinic staff have been at the forefront of Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's plus syndrome research.
Diagnosis
Patients with multiple system atrophy eventually develop symptoms of both Parkinson's disease (slowed movement, rigidity) and autonomic dysfunction (problems with blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, sexual function, etc.), but patients often develop one set of symptoms before the other, making diagnosis difficult.
