Abstracts/Annual Meeting Publications Full size image available below Beta Interferon and Multiple Sclerosis Recent research suggests that multiple sclerosis is triggered when the immune system goes awry and attacks the protein sheath of nerve cells. This led scientists to test beta interferon, a substance which inhibits certain white blood cells, to treat the disease. Studies showed beta interferon can reduce the number and severity of multiple sclerosis attacks and brain abnormalities in patients. It was recently approved for widespread use by patients with one form of MS. For decades, doctors could do little to treat multiple sclerosis, a disabling neurological disease of the brain and spinal cord affecting 300,000 Americans. Therapies could ease some symptoms, such as muscle spasms and fatigue, but could not change the course of the disease.
Recent developments, however, offer hope to patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). These advances are the fruit of years of basic and clinical research.
At the forefront is beta interferon 1b, a treatment approved in 1993 by the Food and Drug Administration for the roughly 40 percent of patients with a "relapsing, remitting" form of MS. This type is characterized by alternating acute episodes and partial or complete recovery.

BEFORE
AFTER I had the Lap Roux- n-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery on August 5, 2002. The surgery was performed by Dr. Donald Waldrep and his assistant Dr. Richard Suh @ Sutter Roseville Hospital, CA.
While I was losing weight my pictures (more pics coming soon) and my measurements were taken to track my weight loss progress and I have posted them on my web site for you to see.
On July 16, 2004 I had a done by Dr. Victor Nava in Lincoln, CA. Mastoplexy is where the breasts are lifted (caused from drooping) and a breast reduction. I have been battling my weight since I was a child. Now that I have a child of my own, I finally decided it's time to do something for me, to give myself a second chance at life. To watch my daughter grow up, be active with her and for my daughter to be proud of who her Mom is. I have Multiple Sclerosis as well and was dx in 1987. This is another reason for me to have surgery.

Imagine a world where one day you are an elite athlete full of life and vitality, a young woman living out your dreams. Now imagine that world being stripped away and replaced by a different world, a world that consisted of lying in a nursing home bed completely paralysed, unable to eat, speak or communicate with your loved ones. That was what happened to Trish Langsford after being struck down in the prime of her life by the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis. Trish represented New South Wales in the Open Women's Cricket Team, was a member of the Australian Squad and captained the Australian Youth Team against New Zealand. She graduated from university with a degree in Human Movement and was appointed Development Officer for Women's Cricket NSW. She was devastated when, at the age of 23, she had to relinquish her job because of the effects of multiple sclerosis.

Bringing FES to South Africa
What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?
Functional Electrical Stimulation is the clinical application of a small electric current to the intact nerves of the body, in order to trigger a muscle contraction. This contraction is then incorporated into a functional activity, for example walking. A clear distinction needs to be made between Therapeutic Stimulation and Functional Stimulation. The former being of an exercise orientation, where one would relax whilst the stimulation works on its own. Functional Electrical Stimulation on the other hand, incorporates this elicited muscle movement into an everyday activity, like standing, walking, reaching out etc. Much work has been done in the field of FES world wide, but one of the largest clinical applications of FES is found in Salisbury District Hospital, Department of Medical Physics, England. They have up to now seen more than 1100 patients, trained more than 300 clinicians, and employ an active Research and Development programme. Their clinical service began in 1994, and they currently employ Clinical Engineers, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists and technicians to this end.
