Expanded Disability Scale
As a way of quantifying how much MS has affected individuals physically, Dr. John Kurtzke developed a scale for measuring the severity of disability. The 1-10 scale is the most widely used systems for clinically judging the status of people with MS. The Expanded Disability Status Scale is also useful in measuring the efficacy of treatments in clinical trials.

A cynical but amusing guide on how to cope when diagnosed with a chronic andincurable disease such as MS.

How to Suffer From a Chronic and Incurable Disease
Without Appearing to be a Total Loser After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (usually abbreviated to MS) in February 2001 at age 41, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was kind enough to send me a glossy book called Incidental Heroes: Disabling the Myths About Multiple Sclerosis (published by the The National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1999). It's an impressive book but I'm not a hero and, to tell you the truth, I'm not really interested in heroes. Right from the start I wanted to know how ordinary people cope with MS. What are they thinking? What are they doing? I mean, what are they really thinking? An alarmingly large fraction of the MS literature that I've read has been serious, sensible, and sanctimonious, and therefore runs the risk of being turgid, tedious, and trite. This website is one man's attempt to change that. I think it is important that MS sufferers and their caregivers maintain a sense of humor. I've read that humor can improve health, and that it improves the quality of life. If you have MS and you're not ready for humor yet - many MS patients will take years to reach that point and some will never get there - then read no further. If you don't have MS and are looking for humor only, I should warn you that MS is a serious subject so if you are squeamish, then likewise, now is a good time to bail out. Betaseron is a medication manufactured by a biotechnological process from one of the naturally occurring interferons (a type of protein). In a clinical trial of 372 ambulatory patients with relapsing-remitting MS, those taking the currently recommended dose of the medication experienced fewer exacerbations, a longer time between exacerbations, and exacerbations that were generally less severe than those of patients taking a lower dose of the medication or a placebo. Additionally, patients on interferon beta-1b had no increase in total lesion area, as shown on MRI, in contrast to the placebo group, that had a significant increase. Approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Important Note
Each benefit plan defines which services are covered, which are excluded, and which are subject to dollar caps or other limits. Members and their providers will need to consult the member's benefit plan to determine if there are any exclusions or other benefit limitations applicable to this service or supply. The conclusion that a particular service or supply is medically necessary does not constitute a representation or warranty that this service or supply is covered (i.e., will be paid for by Aetna) for a particular member. The member's benefit plan determines coverage. Some plans exclude coverage for services or supplies that Aetna considers medically necessary. If there is a discrepancy between this policy and a member's plan of benefits, the benefits plan will govern. In addition, coverage may be mandated by applicable legal requirements of a State, the Federal government or CMS for Medicare and Medicaid members. CMS's Coverage Issues Manual can be found on the following website: http://cms.hhs.gov/manuals/pub06pdf/pub06pdf.asp

136. Campath For MS Or Multiple Sclerosis - Home
Gives details of UK patient's experiences of Campath 1h as a treatment for MS. Also includes links, news and technical information about this drug.
http://www.davidscampathstory.org/
Background Campath-1H is a potentially new treatment for Multiple Sclerosis or MS. It is currently undergoing trials in the UK, USA, Russia, Italy and Croatia to determine whether it can help those with an early form of MS. The drug is a monoclonal antibody designed to target that part of the immune system which is assumed to be harming people with MS (PwMS). Campath's scientific name is alemtuzumab and it is currently manufactured by ILEX Pharmaceuticals and distributed by Berlex Laboratories. It has been developed for a number of years, and has already been used as a treatment for B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. This Site Following a number of requests, I have decided to reinstate my web diary about how this drug has affected me. I understand that there is an extended trial of the drug being conducted in or around Plymouth (UK), so there appear to be more patients seeking information about this course of treatment. The diary is not yet up to date. I hope to bring it up to date within the next few days, so please bear with me. Important I am not a doctor, but a person with MS who has undergone this treatment. This site is no substitute for professional medical advice, but merely a tool for those seeking more information on this subject. Campath-1H is a powerful drug, and should only be considered as a treatment option after extensive consultations between a patient and their own medical practitioners.

multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS), (multiple sclerosis is well named. Sclerosis comes from the Greek word skleros
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc17.html
Multiple Sclerosis December 2001 WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS), the nerves that comprise the brain and spinal cord. Its cause is unknown, and it cannot be prevented or cured. It is not fatal, however, and great progress is being made in treating it and identifying underlying mechanisms that trigger this disease.
  • The process begins with the destruction of myelin , a fatty insulation covering the nerve fibers.
  • The end results of this process, called demyelination, are multiple patches of hard, scarred tissue called plaques . (Multiple sclerosis is well named. Sclerosis comes from the Greek word skleros , which means hard.)
The symptoms, severity, and course of MS vary widely depending partly on the sites of the plaques and the extent of the demyelination.
Experts generally group multiple sclerosis into two major categories:
  • Relapsing-remitting.
  • Chronic-progressive MS. Chronic progressive, in turn, is often subcategorized as primary-progressive, secondary-progressive, and progressive-relapsing MS.
Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis generally occurs in younger people and is the most common form of MS. It generally follows this course:
