A fatty substance (called myelin ) surrounds and insulates nerve fibers and facilitates the conduction of nerve impulse transmissions. MS is characterized by intermittent damage to myelin (called demyelination ) caused by the destruction of specialized cells (oligodendrocytes) that form the substance. Demyelination causes scarring and hardening (sclerosis) of nerve fibers usually in the spinal cord, brain stem, and optic nerves, which slows nerve impulses and results in weakness, numbness, pain, and vision loss.

Abstracts/Annual Meeting Publications Full size image available below Beta Interferon and Multiple Sclerosis Recent research suggests that multiple sclerosis is triggered when the immune system goes awry and attacks the protein sheath of nerve cells. This led scientists to test beta interferon, a substance which inhibits certain white blood cells, to treat the disease. Studies showed beta interferon can reduce the number and severity of multiple sclerosis attacks and brain abnormalities in patients. It was recently approved for widespread use by patients with one form of MS. For decades, doctors could do little to treat multiple sclerosis, a disabling neurological disease of the brain and spinal cord affecting 300,000 Americans. Therapies could ease some symptoms, such as muscle spasms and fatigue, but could not change the course of the disease.
Recent developments, however, offer hope to patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). These advances are the fruit of years of basic and clinical research.
At the forefront is beta interferon 1b, a treatment approved in 1993 by the Food and Drug Administration for the roughly 40 percent of patients with a "relapsing, remitting" form of MS. This type is characterized by alternating acute episodes and partial or complete recovery.

80. DIRECT-MS
There is a great deal of scientific evidence which links dietary factors tomultiple sclerosis. Diet revision is an excellent therapy for controlling MS
http://www.direct-ms.org/
Welcome to the DIRECT-MS Website
In 1995 my son received the devastating diagnosis of MS. Having been a research scientist for 30 years, I decided to plunge into the scientific literature for MS to determine the most likely factors which cause MS and to use this information to develop an effective therapy for my son. Notably, many people are having great success in halting or greatly slowing MS with nutritional strategies; many Testimonials are available. I am most pleased to report that my son remains in excellent health with no MS symptoms. I discovered abundant scientific evidence that indicates that various nutritional factors potentially play major roles in the onset and progression of MS. Strangely, this information was not being made available to persons with MS by doctors nor by established MS charities. My wife and I and a group of others dealing with MS decided to make this information freely available and established a federally registered charity which we called DIRECT-MS , short for DI et RE search into the C ause and T reatment of M ultiple S clerosis.
