Multiple Personality Disorder - Information for Families
by Vicki Koenig, PhD. and Jonathan Kessler, M.A., M.F.C.C.
Multiple Personality Disorder (also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder) is a severe mental illness characterized by the presence of two or more separate identities that control the individual's actions and behavior. This is accompanied by an inability to remember important personal information that is beyond the scope of ordinary forgetfulness. Typically, while in one "identity" the person will not have recall or consciousness of actions that were taken while in another "identity". These identities may have very different aspects, mannerisms, likes and dislikes, etc, and may go by different names. For some general thoughts on dealing with a loved one's diagnosis of a mental illness such as Multiple Personality Disorder , please see our "Mental Illness - Information for Families" page. Although the term "Schizophrenia" is commonly used by lay people to refer to multiple personality disorder, this is in fact completely wrong and inaccurate. Schizophrenia is a separate mental illness, characterized by delusions and/or hallucinations, but without any features of a separate personality. For more information, see our information page on "Schizophrenia" . In addition to the obvious feature of distinct and separate personalities, this disorder is characterized by amnesia, as one identity may have no awareness of the actions of another identity. Significant portions of childhood may also be forgotten. Suicidal or aggressive tendancies may be present in one or more identities. More than 2 identities may be present, but in over half of all reported cases feature 10 or fewer identities. Treatment may include inpatient or outpatient therapy, and may feature medication, "talk therapy", and other therapeutic interventions.

I really had no idea or expectations as to what it would become. My main motive was to get information out to people in a timely manner. I was receiving from 20 to 50 email's a day requesting information on MPD/DID. I thought a webpage would be a better way to get more information to a larger number of people within a shorter amount of time. As I've added more and more things, the webpage has grown at a alarming rate. I opened it towards the end of March 1998 and since then have had 100,000+ visitors. issociative disorders. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is the universal tool in treating MPD. If you have MPD, you are in a trance state everyday, and through hypnosis your inner personality system may be more easily accessed. Hypnosis also allows the patient to recall memories without being overwhelmed by trauma of remembering the event. Hypnosis also usually tends to raise trust issues between the doctor and the patient which is a big factor in getting treated. Hypnosis also shows the patient the difference between the past and the present, and lets each alter know that change is possible. It is also necessary to use therapeutic work to help move the MPD alters down the dissociation spectrum. Group Therapy: Your Therapist will probably advise you against group therapy. This recommendation is usually warranted if the style of the group is to reveal traumatic events by the use of drama or art (emotional catharsis). This is to protect the patient from re-traumatization. Many MPD patients report

The Johns Hopkins University Press

Excerpt
Abstract:
Multiple personality disorder poses a number of problems for philosophers. Ideological battles rage over whether the syndrome is real or an artifact of therapy and of selected therapists. These battles tend to spring from a realist and fairly naive philosophy of mind and depend on an empiricist view of the mind and mental contents. Discursive psychology offers a different way of looking at consciousness and the self in which the narrative role of a subject is an important part of the constitution of the self. The narrative constructed is influenced by cultural and interpersonal contexts and reflects the types of self-conception available from them. In this view there is no simple opposition between the real self and the constructed self, and social and personal influences including prevalent conceptions of the mind are in part responsible for both. Deep Trance Now Hypnosis
Multiple Personality Disorder - MPD
Multiple Personality disorder, or MPD, is a bizarre syndrome in which two or more distinct personalities inhabit a single body. People who suffer from this disorder , or "multiples", often have an awareness of their condition. They do not realize that control of their body is being passed back and forth between different personalities and instead feel they are suffering from some kind of amnesia, confusion, or black-out spells. Most multiples average between eight to thirteen personalities, although so-called super-multiples may have more than a hundred subpersonalities. One of the most telling statistics regarding multiples is that 97 percent of them have had a history of severe childhood trauma, often in the form of monstrous psychological, physical, and sexual abuse. This has led many researchers to conclude that becoming a multiple is the psyche's way of coping with extraordinary and soul-crushing pain. By dividing up into one or more personalities the psyche is able to parcel out the pain, in a way, and have several personalities bear what would be too much for just one personality to withstand. In this sense becoming a multiple may be the ultimate example of what Bohm means by fragmentation. It is interesting to note that when the psyche fragments itself, it does not become a collection of broken and jagged-edged shards, but a collection of smaller wholes, complete and self-sustaining with their own traits, motives, and desires. Although these wholes are not identical copies of the original personality, they are related to the dynamics of the original personality, and this in itself suggests that some kind of holographic process is involved.

  • Introduction

  • I/O/D is put together by a production team of three, based in Cardiff and London and also aided and abetted on the nets by Calum Selkirk, based in Columbus, Ohio - a relationship obviously made possible through computer mediated communications. Individuals or groups whose work we feel an affinity with either contribute independently or are asked to submit some work. In most cases these will be people who do not have specific knowledge of multi-media design but whose activity as text, graphics or sound-makers correlates with some of the dynamics we are playing with in the construction of I/O/D.
Before we return to a more detailed discussion of I/O/D though, we need to situate it within an episodic context of some ongoing antagonisms around the nature of a technologised physicality.
  • Inhuman Potential

  • The mind as an interface is no longer viable.
McLuhan's assumption that the media-net would become merely an extension of the human nervous system with the humanoid core remaining its 'same old self' has provided a touch stone for both the liberation rhetoric of writers such as Howard Rheingold and for tele-vangelists seeking the redemption of the free market through the virtual corporation: a model of business as the management of flows that is at once homely and sublime - yet not of course lacking in sadistic perks.

The degree and symptoms of the fragmentation may vary, but the most severe andchronic form occurs in multiple personality disorder (MPD).
    http://jmahoney.com/exorcism.html
EXORCISM AND MPD FROM A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE Added to that issue is the highly variable use of language, with some religious groups considering any encounter with impulses not easily controlled, or an emotional illness not responding to treatment as being evidence of possession or influence by the demonic. Thus, a religious community can refer to being oppressed or possessed "by the spirit of anger" when there is difficulty for someone in controlling their temper. I would like to limit my discussion to the idea of exorcism and its implications in the context of the usual theological and cultural understanding of Catholics. In this discussion, I would define demonic possession as a continuing state or presence of an evil entity that is not "of the person." That external entity is capable of direct control of the person and/or taking over of the person’s body. I would define demonic oppression as a continuing state of severe assault by an external evil entity, but the person retains control of behavior and of the body. Both possession and oppression are far more than a situation of temptation, and are inherently direct contacts with the presence of evil. I would define exorcism as a religious attempt, using prayers, religious symbols, and orders to expel an evil entity. As soon as there is an attempt at expulsion, with a perception that

    Abstract
This paper explores the disorder known as Multiple Personality Disorder. The paper attempts to define this illness and takes into account the different meaning of personality as well. Skeptical views are explored and argued against the fact that many cases of MPD have arisen only in the past three decades. Small changes in character traits are explored across time and due to certain instances which affect a person, resulting in a change of personality. Cases of more than two personalities are explored and deemed extremely rare cases, not comparing in any way to the subtle changes suspect to the culturally conditioned iatrogenic theory of MPD. The childhood traumatic theory of MPD is also explored and compared to the culturally conditioned theory.
    From the Paper:
"Many people have argued the topic of personality and what it is to be a person over the centuries. Exploring the different meanings is very complex and to say that Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) involves multiple persons depends on what we define to be a person. If there are simply changes in attitude in a person over a given time, is it classified as MPD or "excessively moody"? Taylor and Martin (1944) stated that MPD is the presence in one patient of two or more personalities each of which is so well defined as to have a relatively stable mental life of its own (as cited in Gillett 1986). Usually in MPD, the character traits of the other "person" are the opposite of the real person, for example, happy and withheld to hot-tempered and open."

"Being a borderline feels like eternal hell. Nothing less. Pain, anger, confusion, hurt, never knowing how I'm gonna feel from one minute to the next. Hurting because I hurt those who I love. Feeling misunderstood. Analyzing everything. Nothing gives me pleasure. Once in a great while I will get "too happy" and then anxious because of that. Then I self-medicate with alcohol. Then I physically hurt myself. Then I feel guilty because of that. Shame. Wanting to die but not being able to kill myself because I'd feel too much guilt for those I'd hurt, and then feeling angry about that so I cut myself or O.D. to make all the feelings go away. Stress!" Therapists use a book called "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual" (DSM) to make mental health diagnoses. They've outlined nine traits that borderlines seem to have in common; the presence of five or more of them may indicate BPD.
