SYMBOLISM IN DREAMS
I Dreams I Nightmares I Eating Disorders I Multiple Personality Disorder I
I Borderline Personality Disorders I Alcoholism I Dreams have been objects of boundless fascination and mystery for humankind since the beginning of time. These nocturnal vivid images seem to arise from some source other than our ordinary conscious mind. They contain a mixture of elements from our own personal identity which we recognize as familiar along with a quality of otherness in the dream images that carries a sense of the strange and eerie. The bizarre and nonsensical characters and plots in dreams point to deeper meanings and contain rational and insightful comments on our waking situations and emotional experiences. The ancients thought that dreams were messages from the gods. Today we know that they are messages from a deep source of wisdom and understanding within ourselves. Every dream is a message from some deeper unconscious part of myself to the more conscious everyday part of myself expressed in a language that needs to be learned and understood. The dream has been called the royal road to the unconscious. A modern way of saying that would be that the dream is the window to the soul. It is often helpful to make a conscious reminder to oneself before retiring for bed by saying I will remember a dream tonight I would like to explore some of the possible meanings and associations to some common dream images and symbols that most people will have experienced at one time or another. One caveat is that each dream is the unique personal experience and possession of the dreamer and that the same image may have different meanings for different people based on their own individual experiences and the context of the lives and the context of the dream in which it occurs. Only the dreamer can ultimately know the correctness of any particular interpretation of an image or symbol that occurs in a dream as to the meaning for that particular dreamer. We can look at some of the universal images that commonly occur in dreams and reflect on the possibilities that the image suggests. This can be a way of amplifying the image to enrich and deepen its significance and to present deeper layers of meaning.

Multiple Personality (DID): A Controversial Diagnosis
Consider what two major editors of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV say about MPD (also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID): "A good rule of thumb is that any condition that has become a favorite with Hollywood, Oprah, and checkout-counter newspapers and magazines stands a great chance of being wildly overdiagnosed" (p. 288). "Many therapists feel that the popularity of Dissociative Identity Disorder represents a kind of social contagion. It is not so much that there are suddenly lots of people with lots of personalities as there are lots of people and lots of therapists who are very suggestible and willing to climb onto the bandwagon of this new fad diagnosis" p. 286. "[W]e are worried that the current overdiagnosis of multiple personality is an illusory fad that leads to misdiagnosis and mistreatment and does a disservice to the vast majority of patients who fall under its sway" p. 287. "If you are wondering whether you qualify for this diagnosis it is a very good bet that you almost surely do not" p. 289.

The Infinite Mind: Multiple Personality Disorder Week of December 8, 1998 (Originally aired June 8, 1998) From time to time, we all experience differing states of mind, like happiness or anger, but underneath our changing reactions to the changing world around us lies our personality, fixed and stable traits that determines who we are. Hence, switching from one personality to another in a moment seems strange, even frightening. The root of the condition we call multiple personality disorder is dissociation. Mild dissociation, the feeling we get when we "zone out" when things feel too overwhelming, is considered a normal defense mechanism. But when children exposed to severe, prolonged trauma must dissociate constantly, the need to shift from one personality state to another can become permanent. Carol Jean Darby Cline would often find herself greeted by people she didn't recognize, or suddenly find herself in a place without any idea of how she got there. Cline wrote

Few psychological disorders have interested people as much as multiple personality disorder. Movies like Sybil and The Three Faces of Eve have been very popular. Multiple personality disorder is now known as dissociative identity disorder. Everyone has different sides to their personalities. Sometimes we may be serious and sometimes playful. Some people may show a change in their personalities when they are drinking or using drugs. Dissociative personality disorder is different. In it, more than one distinct identity exists within a person's body. These identities control behavior. The person has an inability to remember important personal information. This problem is too severe to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. The person with a dissociative identity disorder has a primary identity that usually carries the individual's given name. This identity is usually depressed, guilty, passive, and dependent. Other identities, or personalities, generally have their own names, likes, dislikes, and skills. Different personalities may act like they have different ages, genders, or races. There may be as few as two identities or more than one hundred. The personalities may or may not have knowledge of the others. Stress tends to bring on changes in personalities. The cause of this disorder remains unknown. Some professionals believe it is related to severe physical or sexual abuse in childhood. Many people with dissociative identity disorder also have depression, sexual disorders, eating disorders, or sleep disorders. Many have post-traumatic stress disorder.

By Nilesh Parekh, 9/27/2004 Multiple personality disorder, which is also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), is a psychotic (neurosis) disorder in which a person suffering from the mental disturbance undergo different experiences and his/her personality becomes dissociated into more than one personalities. These personalities dominate and control the behavior of the patient alternatively or depending on the mental stress condition.
Multiple Personality Disorder can be caused by many reasons such as childhood abuse, social environment of the patient; problems in brain functioning, over-exposure (i.e. repeated episodes) to some traumatic situations, lack of proper support from someone in countering stress filled situations, influence of a particular personality may be from surrounding or from history etc. Situations where mental stress and pressure are high induce vulnerability of a person to this disorder.

Multiple Personality Disorder is perhaps one of the most discussed mental disorders, something that is probably a result of the widespread acclaim commanded by the famous book, Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And while the condition was quite monumentally dramatized in the case of the book, actual features and characteristics of the disorder are not all that dissimilar, fundamentally, from those portrayed in the book. It would be relevant to here acknowledge that Multiple Personality Disorder is contemporaneously referred to as the Dissociative Personality disorder.

Short Description: Schizophrenia/MPD: (Damaged Past Life Filters)
In many cases, Schizophrenia (SCH) and/or Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD) are caused by damaged memory filters which allow past life personalities to control the present day body-mind in ways that are both inappropriate and damaging. Causes: Memory filters in the mind are designed to help individuals access their past life skills and talents without connecting with the "past life personalities" who earned them. What normally happens is, when an individual is in crisis, they access the "unused" part of their brain (where all their past life data is stored) to help them overcome it. Often the past life personality was an integral part of exercise of the talent or skill, which is why the mind needs to filter out the "personality" from the "learned skill or talent". When the crisis is averted, the pathway to that part of their brain is automatically shut off by the mind's past life filters.
In both Schizophrenia (SCH) and/or Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD), the crises are either so severe or so chronic and long lasting that past life filters will no longer function properly. The mind then has difficulty distinguishing between the current and all prior personalities. In a sense, the prior personalities come back to life and fight for the attention of the current body-mind. In MPD, a host of prior personalities jockey for position at the forefront of the person's awareness and end up "taking turns". In SCH, there is usually a very dominant prior personality which drives out all others except themselves and the current day personality.
