Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome is marked by multiple symptoms in multiple organ systems (usually the neurological, immune, respiratory, skin, "GI," and/or musculoskeletal) that recur chronic-ally in response to multiple chemical exposures. MCS usually starts with either an acute or chronic toxic exposure, after which this initial sensitivity broadens to include many other chemicals and common irritants (pesticides, perfumes and other scented products, fuels, food additives, carpets, building materials, etc.).
MCS Symptoms
commonly include difficulty breathing, sleeping and/or concentrating, memory loss, migraines, nausea, abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, aching joints and muscles, and irritated eyes, nose, ears, throat and/or skin. In addition, some with MCS show impaired balance and increased sensitivity not just to odors but also to loud noises, bright lights, touch, extremes of heat and cold, and electromagnetic fields.
MCS Studies
show about 2/3 of those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia also have MCS (and vice versa), as do 1/2 of those with allergies. Like CFS, MCS is more common in women and can start at any age, but usually begins in late puberty to mid-life. There is no unique test for MCS, but immune, porphyrin, EEG, balance, and SPECT scan abnormalities are common.

MCS What Is It Really?
MCS stands for Multiple Chemcial Sensitivities, also known as Environmental Illness. It is allergic reactions to chemicals, often not clearly antibody driven. Symptoms can be quite bizzare, from sneezing to loosing the ability to do math, "brain fog", or even progressive coordination imparement. This is often "simply" due to the inability of the body to clear various toxins, be they from the chemicals we use in our daily lives, or from the toxins formed by various infections, infestations, etc. within our bodies. But this apparent simplicity belies a host of complex interlocking underlaying causes and systems involved. There have been tales of sometimes spectacular successes in treating MCS, but when one talks with the "cured" person some months or years later, one finds the success did not restore health all the way, or sometimes, did not do very much at all despite early good feelings. Why? What is this thing called MCS really about? The problem is that these ailments are often not simple problems with single point cures. It is often a Whole Big Mess of things going wrong and causeing other things to go wrong. With many of the victims having several problems at once, few are treated for the total impact, often resulting in only temporary cures which are later followed by "unrelated" ailments or lingering symptoms.

In theory, MCS is an adverse physical reaction to low levels of many common chemicals. Chemical sensitivity is generally accepted as a reaction to chemicals but debate continues on whether MCS is classifiable as an illness. There are a number of synonyms for MCS, including 20th century disease, environmental illness, total allergy syndrome, idiopathic environmental illness and chemical AIDS.
Proposed theories to explain the cause of MCS include allergy, dysfunction of the immune system, neurobiological sensitization, and various psychological theories. There is insufficient scientific evidence to confirm a relationship between any of these possible causes and symptoms. Due to the lack of definite information an evaluation must be performed by a physician knowledgeable of the symptoms of this condition. The following commonly asked questions link to resources that provide information about MCS.

Allergies: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Question: Two years ago there was a chemical spill at my workplace, and many of my co-workers and I became ill immediately after the exposure. Since then, I haven't been the same. It feels like I can't think as clearly now, and I seem to be allergic to almost everything, including perfumes, cosmetics, detergents and household cleaning products. I heard about multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) on a radio talk show, and I think I am chemically sensitive. When I asked my doctor about MCS, he didn't have much to say about it. What can you tell me about multiple chemical sensitivity? Answer: I can tell you that multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is something of a medical mystery. The medical community is divided over whether or not MCS actually exists. Some physicians acknowledge MCS as a medical disorder that is triggered by exposures to chemicals in the environment, often beginning with a short term, severe chemical exposure (like a chemical spill) or with a longer term, small exposures (like a poorly ventilated office building). After the initial exposure, low levels of everyday chemicals such as those found in cosmetics, soaps, and newspaper inks can trigger physical reactions in MCS patients. These patients report a range of symptoms that often include headaches, rashes, asthma, depression, muscle andjoint aches, fatigue, memory loss, and confusion. Others in the medical community, however, do not accept MCS as a genuine medical disorder. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, do not recognize MCS as a clinical diagnosis. There is no official medical definition of MCS, partially because symptoms and chemical exposures are often unique and are widely varied between individuals. Some physicians are skeptical of concluding that low concentrations of the same chemicals that are tolerated by everyone else can cause dramatic symptoms in MCS patients. The American Medical Association denies that MCS is a clinical condition because conclusive scientific evidence is lacking.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Syndrome (MCSS)
Question: What is it and What is Known About MCSS? Answer: Actually, the preferred medical term is Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI), which can be defined as a "chronic, recurring disease caused by a person's inability to tolerate an environmental chemical or class of foreign chemicals." Six criteria of IEI
Several years ago a committee of experts in thie field decided upon a consensus as to what "qualifies" the patient as truly having IEI [Arch Environ Health 1999; 54: 147]. Six criteria were decided upon:
  • Symptoms are reproducible with repeated (chemical) exposures. The condition is chronic. Low levels of exposure (lower than previously or commonly tolerated) result in manifestations of the syndrome (i.e. increased sensitivity). The symptoms improve, or resolve completely, when the triggering chemicals are removed. Responses often occur to multiple chemically-unrelated substances. Symptoms involve multiple-organ symptoms (runny nose, itchy eyes, headache, scratchy throat, ear ache, scalp pain, mental confusion or sleepiness, palpitations of the heart, upset stomach, nausea and/or diarrhea, abdominal cramping, aching joints).
