Use of Misoprostol during Pregnancy and Mobius' Syndrome in Infants
Anne L. Pastuszak et al.
Abstract
Background. Patients with upper gastrointestinal ulceration may be treated
with misoprostol, but it is not recommended for pregnant women because it
may stimulate uterine contractions and cause vaginal bleeding and
miscarriage. Recent data from Brazil, where misoprostol is used orally and
vaginally as an abortifacient, have suggested a relation between the use of misoprostol by women in an unsuccessful attempt to terminate pregnancy and Mobius' syndrome (congenital facial paralysis) in their infants. Methods. We compared the frequency of misoprostol use during the first trimester by mothers of infants in whom Mobius' syndrome was diagnosed and mothers of infants with neural-tube defects in Brazil. All diagnoses in

Clinical Characteristics and Diagnostic Considerations
Approximately 4% of the general population has strabismus. Estimates of the prevalence of non-strabismus anomalies of binocular vision range from 25% to 50%! If the patient has no strabismus under natural conditions, the patient has an ortho- or heterophoria, and is said to have a latent ocular deviation. More people have heterophoria than orthophoria. When evaluating binocularity (especially in cases of strabismus) consider the following: frequency and periodicity
AC/A ratio

deviation with the fixating eye in primary position

cosmesis
...
ocular dominance
Frequency and Periodicity
The frequency of the manifest deviation must be determined. That is, is the strabismus intermittent or constant? Is the strabismus periodic, and if so, is it manifest at near, distance, or unpredictably? Return to characteristics list
AC/A ratio
The relationship between accommodation and convergence is an extremely important consideration in the diagnosis and management of binocular anomalies. The efficacy of lens, prism, and vision training therapy is dependent upon AC/A relationships. Return to characteristics list
Direction of deviating eye when the fixating eye is in primary position
Horizontal deviations
  • Eso - Inward rotation of the eye (towards the nose)
  • Exo - Outward rotation of the eye (towards the ear)
Vertical deviations
  • Hyper - Upward rotation of the eye
  • Hypo - Downward rotation of the eye
Torsional deviations
