Overview Mitral valve prolapse affects slightly more than 2 percent of the adult population in the United States. Men and women appear to develop MVP in similar numbers. In most people, MVP is harmless and doesn't require any changes in lifestyle. It also doesn't shorten your life expectancy. In some people with MVP, however, the progression of the disease requires treatment. Signs and symptoms Although MVP is a lifetime disorder, many people with this condition never have signs and symptoms. When diagnosed, people may be surprised to learn that they have a heart abnormality because of the absence of signs and symptoms.

Definition
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common, usually benign heart disorder. The mitral valve controls blood flow between the upper (atrium) and lower (ventricle) chambers on the left side of the heart. Normally, blood should only flow in one direction, from the upper chamber into the lower chamber. In MVP, the valve flaps dont work properly; part of the valve balloons into the atrium, allowing blood to leak the wrong direction, back into the atrium. Prolapsed Mitral Valve www.nucleusinc.com
Causes
In most cases, the cause of MVP is unknown. In some cases, it appears to be an inherited genetic condition. Rarely, MVP may be caused by:

Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) What is mitral valve prolapse?
Mitral valve prolapse (also known as "clickmurmur syndrome" and "Barlow's syndrome") is themost common heart valve abnormality, affecting five to ten percentof the world population. A normal mitral valve consists of twothin leaflets, located between the left atrium and the left ventricleof the heart. Mitral valve leaflets, shaped like parachutes, areattached to the inner wall of the left ventricle by a series ofstrings called "chordae." When the ventricles contract, the mitral valve leaflets close snugly, preventing backflow ofblood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. When the ventriclesrelax, the valves open to allow oxygenated blood from the lungsto fill the left ventricle. In patients with mitral valve prolapse, the mitralapparatus (valve leaflets and chordae) becomes affected by a processcalled myxomatous degeneration. In myxomatous degeneration, thestructural protein, collagen, forms abnormally and causes thickening, enlargement and redundancy of the leaflets and chordae. When theventricles contract, the redundant leaflets prolapse (flop backwards)into the left atrium, sometimes allowing leakage of blood throughthe valve opening (mitral regurgitation). When severe, mitralregurgitation can lead to heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Most patients are totally unaware of the prolapsing of the mitralvalve. Others may experience a number of symptoms discussed below.

What is mitral valve prolapse?
Mitral valve prolapse is an abnormality of the mitral valve(1) that is usually quite mild. The mitral valve is located between the left upper chamber of the heart (called the left atrium) and the left lower chamber of the heart (called the left ventricle). The mitral valve is one of four valves within the heart and is comprised of two thin flaps of tissue anchored in a firm ring of tissue. The valve leaflets open (2) allowing blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle and close (3) when the filling is complete.
Mitral valve prolapse is diagnosed when there is a backward bowing of the valve leaflets into the left atrium as the ventricle contracts (4). The valve leaflets are often thicker than normal and sometimes there is leakage of the mitral valve but this is usually mild.
A recent and carefully done study suggests that mitral valve prolapse is not as common as previously reported and probably occurs in 2-3% of the population (Freed, 1999). This study is also reassuring in that very few people have any short or long term problems as a result of mitral valve prolapse. Problems during childhood are extremely rare. There are rare cases of sudden cardiac death attributed to mitral valve prolapse but most of these patients had severe leakage of the mitral valve as well. Mitral valve prolapse is associated with connective tissue disorder such as Marfan syndrome. It can be inherited from the child's parents.

It has two flaps, called leaflets or cusps, which open and close when the heart contracts (beats) and rests. Mitral-valve prolapse (MVP) is frequently diagnosed in healthy people and is, for the most part, harmless. Most people suffer no symptoms at all. New estimates are that about 2 percent of the adult population has the condition. MVP is also called floppy valve syndrome, Barlow's or ReidBarlow's syndrome, ballooning mitral valve, midsystolic-click-late systolic murmur syndrome, or click murmur syndrome. MVP can be present from birth or develop at any age and occurs equally in both men and women. MVP is one of the most frequently made cardiac diagnoses in the United States.

  • Another name for mitral valve prolapse is click-murmur syndrome. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is one of the most common conditions affecting the valves of the heart. It occurs when the twin flaps (leaflets) of tissue that make up your heart's mitral valve billow up and don't close correctly. The mitral valve separates the two chambers on the left side of your heart: the left atrium and the left ventricle. When the mitral valve malfunctions and doesn't close properly, blood may leak from the ventricle back into the atrium.

The “mitral valve prolapse (MVP) syndrome” is said to be characterized by a symptom complex of palpitations, chest pains, easy fatigue, exercise intolerance
    http://www.ucheepines.org/mitral_valve_prolapse.htm
Mitral Valve Prolapse A Case History A 41-year-old white woman arrived at Uchee Pines Institute in a wheelchair. She had had increasingly severe chest pains, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, and anxiety over the previous 18 months. Electrocardiogram was normal; echocardiogram confirmed MVP. Several days were spent in reassurance and tapering off medications. She was given hawthorn berry tea, Epsom salts, and catnip tea as needed through the day for anxiety; hops and catnip tea allowed her to sleep without medication. She began a graduated walking program with her Lifestyle Counselor at her side for reassurance. Each day she went further and gained confidence. By the end of the third week she was walking 6-8 miles a day and was almost totally asymptomatic. She donated her wheelchair to the Institute and returned home with no further significant symptoms. The advent of echocardiography, which for the first time allowed the cardiologist to see what was going on inside the heart in real time, allowed the diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse. It involved between 25 and 30% of all women in the U.S., most being diagnosed in the 25-35 age group.

  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Mitral valve prolapse, also known as Barlow's syndrome or systolic click-murmur syndrome, is a malfunction of the heart's mitral valve, the physical doorway between the heart's left atrium and left ventricle. Normally, the mitral valve closes when the ventricle's muscles contract, preventing a blood from flowing back into the left atrium when the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. In mitral valve prolapse, however, a slight deformity of the mitral valve prevents the valve from closing normally. This appears as an abnormal floppiness or "prolapse" of the valve. The result is that small amounts of blood leak back into the left atrium, with very little effect on the heart's overall ability to pump blood.

Visit The University of Maryland Heart Center's Mitral Valve Disorders Overview to learn more about this condition. What is mitral valve prolapse (MVP)?
The mitral valve is the heart valve between the left atrium and left ventricle consisting of two flaps or cusps. When one or both valve flaps become enlarged, some of the supporting strings may stretch and become too long. This causes the flaps to not close correctly when the heart contracts. Part of the flaps may collapse backward into the atrium, allowing blood to leak backward through the valve. This could cause a heart murmur. How is mitral valve prolapse treated?
People with mitral valve prolapse may have no symptoms, or they may experience symptoms including heart palpitations, chest pain, difficulty breathing after exertion, fatigue, cough and shortness of breath while lying down. People who have leaky (regurgitant) prolapsing valves, may be treated with antibiotics during certain surgical or dental procedures likely to cause bleeding (to prevent endocarditis). Medication may also be used in a small number of MVP patients who have chest pain (angina pectoris) or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

Mitral Valve Prolapse and Thyroid Disease

    by Mary Shomon

If you are experiencing heart palpitations, heart pounding, dizziness, sleeplessness, or panic attacks, and there doesn't appear to be an explanation for it, you may have mitral valve prolapse syndrome, or MVP syndrome. Recent medical research has found that the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse is substantially greater in patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. One medical reference that supports this finding includes the research reported in the journal Cardiology
    Major Symptoms of MVP include:
    Pounding, fast heartbeat
    Palpitations
    Fatigue
    Weakness
Low tolerance for exercise Chest pain Panic attacks Headaches, migraines
