Magnesium
Covers common conditions linked to a deficiency
Part One
Magnesium is a must. The diets of all Americans are likely to be deficient........Even a mild deficiency causes sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers. Adelle Davis, writing in Let's Have Healthy Children Read my Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries. Common conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, migraines, attention deficit disorder, fibromyalgia, asthma and allergies

Mitral Valve Prolapse WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE? The mitral valve is one of the four valves of the heart. It is located in the left side of the heart, and it separates the left atrium (or upper chamber) from the left ventricle (or lower pumping chamber). Because the mitral valve lies between the left atrium and left ventricle, it is also known as the left atrioventricular valve. Valves open and close, like doors. The closure of the valves in the heart is what produces the characteristic "lub-dub" heart sounds. They help direct the flow of blood through the heart, normally allowing flow in one direction. The mitral valve leaflets open equally when blood is flowing from the left atrium and filling the left ventricle. The mitral valve leaflets then close, with both leaflets firm and shut, when the left ventricle contracts and pumps the blood out to the body. WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE? Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a condition in which there is a slight variation in shape or structure of the mitral valve, causing one or both of the mitral valve leaflets to "billow" or "bulge" backward into the upper left atrium during the contraction of the lower left ventricle. Remember, when the left ventricle contracts and ejects blood into the aorta and to the body, the mitral valve leaflets should remain firm and shut. Instead, the mitral valve leaflets(s) billow backward causing prolapse Sometimes when the mitral valve leaflet prolapses, it may produce a "click". As mentioned earlier, valves help direct the flow of blood in one direction through the heart. Often, when the mitral valve leaflet billows, or prolapses, it allows for a small backward leak of blood. This may produce a soft murmur. The "click-murmur", if present, can sometimes be heard with a stethoscope. Over the years, MVP has also been called the Click-Murmur Syndrome, the Floppy-Valve Syndrome, and Barlow's Syndrome, after the name of its discoverer.

Introduction: Mitral-valve prolapse
Mitral-valve prolapse: A common heart condition that is often harmless. Mitral-valve prolapse: Mitral-valve prolapse (MVP) is frequently diagnosed in healthy people and is, for the most part, harmless. Most people suffer no symptoms at all. New estimates are that about 2 percent of the adult population has the condition. MVP is also called floppy valve syndrome, Barlow's or Reid-Barlow's syndrome, ballooning mitral valve, midsystolic-click-late systolic murmur syndrome, or click murmur syndrome. MVP can be present from birth or develop at any age and occurs equally in both men and women. MVP is one of the most frequently made cardiac diagnoses in the United States. Researching symptoms of Mitral-valve prolapse: Further information about the symptoms of Mitral-valve prolapse is available including a list of symptoms of Mitral-valve prolapse , other diseases that might have similar symptoms in differential diagnosis of Mitral-valve prolapse , or alternatively return to research other symptoms in the

Mitral Valve Prolapse
(MVP)
What is mitral valve prolapse?
Mitral valve prolapse (also known as "click murmur syndrome" and "Barlow's syndrome") is the most common heart valve abnormality, affecting five to ten percent of the world population. A normal mitral valve consists of two thin leaflets, located between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. Mitral valve leaflets, shaped like parachutes, are attached to the inner wall of the left ventricle by a series of strings called "chordae." When the ventricles contract, the mitral valve leaflets close snugly, preventing backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. When the ventricles relax, the valves open to allow oxygenated blood from the lungs to fill the left ventricle. In patients with mitral valve prolapse, the mitral apparatus (valve leaflets and chordae) becomes affected by a process called myxomatous degeneration. In myxomatous degeneration, the structural protein, collagen, forms abnormally and causes thickening, enlargement and redundancy of the leaflets and chordae. When the ventricles contract, the redundant leaflets prolapse (flop backwards) into the left atrium, sometimes allowing leakage of blood through the valve opening (mitral regurgitation). When severe, mitral regurgitation can lead to heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Most patients are totally unaware of the prolapsing of the mitral valve. Others may experience a number of symptoms discussed below.

Mitral valve prolapse
Definition: Mitral valve prolapse is a disorder in which the heart's mitral valve which separates the left upper chamber (atrium) from the left lower chamber (ventricle) billows out and does not close properly.
Alternative Names: Barlow's syndrome; Floppy mitral valve; Myxomatous mitral valve; Billowing mitral valve; Systolic click-murmur syndrome; Prolapsing mitral leaflet syndrome
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Mitral valve prolapse can be caused by a variety of mechanisms. In most cases, it is harmless and does not cause symptoms or need to be treated. In a small number of cases, it can cause severe mitral regurgitation (leakage of blood back through the valve) and needs to be treated with surgery. Some forms of mitral valve prolapse seem to be hereditary. Mitral valve prolapse has been associated with

What is mitral valve prolapse (MVP)?
Mitral valve prolapse, also known as click-murmur syndrome, Barlow's syndrome, balloon mitral valve, or floppy valve syndrome, is the bulging of one or both of the mitral valve flaps during the contraction of the heart. One or both of the flaps may not close properly, allowing the blood to leak backward. This may result in a mitral regurgitation murmur.

Mitral Valve Prolapse: A Patient Guide
The most common heart valve abnormality is called Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), which affects between 5 percent and 20 percent of the population. It is more commonly found in women than men and can go undetected for years, as symptoms usually do not occur until adolescence or even adulthood. MVP is most commonly diagnosed among patients between the ages of 20 and 40. What is it? MVP is a condition of the mitral valve, a two-flapped heart valve between the left atrium and left ventricle. In MVP, one or both of the valve flaps are too large, and the mitral valve does not close evenly with each heartbeat. Because of this imperfect closing, the valve itself slightly balloons back into the left atrium, sometimes causing what is known as a "click." With the flap there may sometimes be a slight backward leaking of blood (regurgitation) as well, resulting in a heart murmur. MVP seems to be an inherited disorder, although the precise genes are not known. If proper precautions are taken (see below) it will not affect life expectancy, and generally has no impact on normal activities. What are the symptoms?

Mitral Valve Prolapse
Mitral Valve Prolapse Overview
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is also called click-murmur syndrome, floppy mitral valve syndrome, and Barlow syndrome after the doctor who first described MVP. The mitral valve is one of 4 valves in the heart. It opens and closes to control blood flow between the heart's left atrium and the left ventricle. The mitral valve has 2 flaps, or "leaflets." In mitral valve prolapse , one or both leaflets of the valve are too large, or the chordae tendinea (the strings attached to the underside of the leaflets, connected to the ventricular wall) are too long (redundant), resulting in uneven closure of the valve during each heartbeat. Because of uneven closure of the leaflets, the valve bulges back , or "prolapses," into the left atrium like a parachute. When this happens, a very small amount of blood may leak through, moving backward from the ventricle to the atrium. The valve still works well, and the heart pumps normally. Prolapse does not cause damage to the heart over time. Only 2% of people have other structural heart problems along with mitral valve prolapse.
