    Mitral Valve Prolapse
Easing Symptoms of a Troubled Heart N ormally, the valves that regulate blood flow through the heart close neatly, snapping shut with the lub-dub sound that we recognize as a heartbeat. In mitral valve prolapse, however, an additional click—lub-dit-dub—is added to the heartbeat. The extra sound occurs because the valve between the two left chambers of the heart is pushed out of shape by high blood pressure in the compressing heart. The valve pops upward, almost like a parachute being snapped in the wind. The condition happens when one of the fibrous cords that hold the valve in place stretches out too far or when either of the two leaflets that make up the valve is elongated, thickened or floppy. If the valve does not seal perfectly, blood may leak backward, causing the swishing noise that’s known as a heart murmur. “Mitral valve prolapse syndrome is considered a hereditary disorder,” explains Kristine Scordo, R.N., Ph.D., assistant professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, director of the Mitral Valve Prolapse Program of Cincinnati and author of Taking Control: Living with the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. “People with the disorder—and there are three times as many women as men—are often tall and slender, with long arms and fingers and thin chests.”

Introduction. Heart murmurs are abnormal heart sounds occurring due to abnormalities in one or more of the hearts four valves (1). The most common type of heart murmur is a mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Poor closure of the mitral valve and/or subsequent regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium causes a clicking or shuffling sound heard mid- to late-systole. MVPs are reported to be the most common valvular heart disease in industrialized countries, affecting about 3% of adults (2,3,4). MVP occurs in 6-10% of young women and 4% of young men. The prevalence may exceed 10% in women ages 14-30. Following is a brief orientation to characteristics of MVP including methods of detection, associated disorders, and treatment. Abnormal Heart Sounds (Heart Murmurs). Depending upon when they occur during the normal cardiac cycle, heart murmurs can be classified into three types: systolic, diastolic, and continuous. Brukner and Khan identify eight systolic, two diastolic, and two continuous types of murmurs (5). Fabius identifies six systolic and two diastolic types of murmurs (6). Lillegard and Rucker identify five systolic, two diastolic, and one continuous type of murmur (7). Although sources differ regarding the number of diagnosable murmurs, the classification of when the murmur occurs is critical to an appropriate diagnosis. (Systolic murmurs are typically benign and diastolic murmurs are always pathological.) MVP is classified as a systolic murmur.

Full Review After suffering with a multitude of strange symptoms for months, I have been newly diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome, or "MVPS". Heart disease, high blood pressure and heart attacks at a young age run in my family. So, even at my age, 27, I became overwhelmed by the prospect of having a "heart condition". Feeling rather scared, alone, and uninformed, I browsed eBay for books about MVPS. I decided to buy Confronting Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome , partly based on availability, partly because of its price. With shipping included, I only paid around ten dollars.

Mitral Valve Prolapse Is mitral valve prolapse (MVP) serious?
If you have been told that you have a heart murmur from your mitral valve, or you have been previously diagnosed as having mitral valve prolapse syndrome, floppy valve syndrome, or Barlow's valve syndrome, you may be worried that you have significant heart disease. However, recent studies have shown that most patients who carry these diagnoses actually do not have significant heart disease. This condition is unlikely to get worse or require an operation. Still, it is a good idea for people with MVP to have a baseline echocardiogram to determine how closely they need to be followed by their doctors. What services are available for the care of MVP at the University of Michigan? The University of Michigan is a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of mitral valve disease. We have a multi-disciplinary Mitral Valve Clinic that offers diagnostic echocardiographic studies and the most modern medical treatment available. Most patients who have MVP never need surgery. However, those who do will be cared for by some of the leading mitral valve surgeons in the country. The University of Michigan is a nationally recognized Center of Excellence in mitral valve reconstruction. This procedure, in which a patient's own mitral valve is repaired, is preferable over replacing the valve with an artificial valve.

    Stress Echo
I went this morning to a heart specialist for a stress echocardiagram. I had an irregular EKG at the doctor's last week and my total cholesterol was high,231, up from 220. But all my other numbers were better, and the HDL was good so I had a ratio of 3.0 which is good. My CRP (C-Reactive Protein) was good0.6. But he thought because of the EKG I should check out my heart. So I got all hooked up and walked on the treadmill and it showed that everything was fine. My mitral valve prolapse was the same. Very little leakage but still advised to take penicillin when having teeth cleaned. Since my HDL is good and CRP is O.K. no statins now. That was a relief because I REALLY don't want to do that. And I think my new diet can only make things better. I'm supposed to recheck just the cholesterol in six months. I think this good diet must have helped all my other cholesterol numbers but I can't figure out what I'm eating that would raise the overall number. I was very shocked because we have a Lifestream cholesterol monitor at home. I did the test one hour before I went to the lab and it was 193. I have been monitoring with that for a while and thought I was getting it down. Then I get the test back and it's 38 points higher! Obviously there is something wrong with my machine and I sent it back to the company to be checked for the second time. I sure can't rely on that if there is such a discrepancy. I'll be going back to Lisa on Monday to continue with NAET.

    Mitral Valve Prolapse
What is it? Mitral valve prolapse, or MVP, happens when the doors of the mitral valve in your heart do not close smoothly or evenly. MVP may also be called click-murmur syndrome or floppy-valve syndrome. The heart has 4 rooms or chambers in it. The upper chambers are called atria and the lower chambers are called ventricles. When the heart "beats," the atria push blood into the ventricles. The ventricles then push blood out of the heart. There are valves between each of these rooms. These valves are like doors that direct the blood flow through the heart. The mitral valve is between the left atrium and the left ventricle. It is made up of two smaller leaflets or doors. These leaflets come from each side of the valve and meet in the middle. The job of the leaflets is to keep blood from moving back into the left atrium. The valve opens to let blood flow into the ventricle. It closes to keep blood in the ventricle until the ventricle pushes it out. With mitral valve prolapse, part of one or both leaflets falls backward into the left atrium. This may let a small amount of blood leak backward through the valve. Your caregiver may hear a clicking sound of the floppy leaflets. Some of the blood from the ventricle may come back into the atrium. This causes a leaking or "whooshing" sound and is called a murmur.

    Mitral valve prolapse syndrome- mvp
Mitral valve prolapse syndrome is a medical term describing an abnormal movement of the mitral valve as the heart beats.
Mitral valve prolapse is a medical term describing an abnormal movement of the mitral valve as the heart beats. It is frequently abbreviated as MVP. In order to understand this condition a brief description of the heart, its structure and function, what the mitral valve is and the role it plays in the circulatory system is necessary. The heart is made of four chambers the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. The ventricles are the lower chambers the atria are the upper chambers. Each atrium and ventricle combination form a pump. The atrium where blood enters the heart is a collecting camber. It then pumps into the ventricle and out of the heart. Newly oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium, the top and left side of the heart. It is ten pumped through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. It then is pumped throughout the body to nourish the body’s cells. Blood is so vital as it transports oxygen nutrients and removes waste products. The entire circulatory system takes sixty seconds and will continue your entire lifetime. It is critical that blood flows in the correct direction from the chambers by contractions. The valves protect the heart from an incorrect flow. They are flaps that separate each chamber. At the appropriate time they open to allow blood to flow through, and close to prevent the blood form following backwards. The mitral valve allows blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.
