161. Assessing Migraine Headaches
Assessing your migraine headaches is the first step. Learn more about migraineheadaches; take two questionnaires and then take your results to your doctor
http://www.burnsurvivorsttw.org/articles/mighead.html
Assessing Migraine Headaches By: Michael Appleman, M.S. It has been seen that some people suffer from other types of headaches, not just migraine headaches. It has also been seen that not just individuals that have been burned or injured in other ways suffer from migraines and other types of headaches. The question we must ask is; How can I tell if I am suffering from a migraine headache or some other type of headache? Migraine headaches often have the following symptoms: pain on one side of the head, throbbing pain, pain that disrupts normal activity., or pain that's aggravated by activity. Migraine symptoms may also include nausea, with or without vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. Below you will find a Migraine Self Assessment Questionnaire. This questionnaire may help you recognize if you are having a migraine or other type of headache. Migraine Self Assessment Questionnaire If you answer yes to two of the following questions; 1,2,3, or 4 and Yes to either 5 or 6, you may have migraine headaches. The questionnaire is just a tool to help you recognize the possibility of having a migraine headache. It is best to discuss your medical and psychological problems with your doctor. That will help your doctor to evaluate your difficulties and make the proper diagnoses.

Migraine
Migraine is used to describe a particular type of headache. It is a medical condition that can only be confirmed by a doctor. An attack of migraine is often accompanied, although not always, by the following:
  • blurred vision
  • flashing and/or coloured lights before the eyes
  • nausea and vomiting
  • tingling or numbness of the extremities i.e. the hands or feet

The usual course of treatment is the same as for a headache, that is analgesics (pain killers). However, there are also specialist products available that assist with the added symptoms of a migraine. These products usually contain an anti-emetic . These agents act to suppress the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
Analgesics
There is a huge range of analgesics available on the market today, some contain one pain killer some contain combination of two or more.
There is no preferred analgesic, individuals respond differently to different analgesics. The best way to find out which pain killer is best for you is to try several over a period of time and base your decision on personal experience.
Always follow the instructions given with any analgesic. Always read any labelling to ensure the medication is suitable for your use. Never give prescription analgesics to, or accept them from, another person.

Causes of Migraine Headaches
by Sue Dyson Anyone who has ever suffered from migraine will be only too aware of the effects of the illness on daily life. According to the National Headache Foundation — an organization set up to help migraine and other headache sufferers — American industry loses around $50 billion from absenteeism and medical expenses, all linked to headache pain. In fact, headaches account for about 157 million lost working days in a year. But we are not just talking about inconvenience and economic difficulties; the cost in terms of individual suffering is infinitely higher. Apart from the practical problems they face, sufferers and their friends and families are often in a state of anxiety and bewilderment, particularly in the days following initial diagnosis.

Methods of prevention and control
Ivy Fettes, PhD, MD, FRCPC VOL 101 / NO 5 / MAY 1997 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables. This is the second of four articles on headaches Preview : Migraine headaches can affect anyone of any age but are particularly troublesome for women in the reproductive years, when occurrence patterns are tied to the menstrual cycle. Prophylaxis involves short-term rather than continuous treatment, and preventive measures include establishment of a stable estrogen state and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. A healthy, active lifestyle is encouraged. In this article, Dr Fettes examines causes of menstrual migraine, describes phases of an attack, and reviews methods of both prophylaxis and therapy. M igraine is a headache disorder that affects more than twice as many women as men, although the sex difference does not appear until after puberty. The incidence in female patients increases during adolescence and peaks at the menarche. Up to 25% of women have migraine during their reproductive years, with an average prevalence of 16% (11% without aura and 5% with aura) (1). In 60% to 70% of cases in women, the headaches are related to the menstrual cycle. Attacks that occur exclusively with menses, called "true menstrual migraine," affect about 14% of migraineurs. MacGregor and associates (2) have suggested that migraines occurring on a regular basis between days -2 and +3 of the menstrual cycle be considered menstrual migraine.

Migraine Headaches, Vision Effects
Migraines and Vision Effects Overview
Migraine headache is one of the most common complaints in medicine today. Migraine headaches usually involve one side of the head. Various early symptoms may occur before a typical migraine episode. Other symptoms, together known as an aura, may also occur before a migraine headache, or they may begin when the headache starts. Recent studies show that 23 million Americans, approximately 18% of females and 6% of males, have at least 1 migraine headache a year. Migraine headaches are experienced by 64% of all females and 43% of all males who get severe headaches. The American Migraine Study showed that more than 85% of women and 82% of men with severe migraines had headache-related disability. The estimated cost of lost productivity is $1-13 billion a year. Male migraineurs (persons who get migraines) required 3.8 bedrest days per year; female, 5.6 days.
Race Another recent study showed that, among women, 20.4% of whites, 16.2% of African Americans, and 9.2% of Asian Americans met the criteria for migraine.

Causes and Treatments of Migraine and Related Headaches
Migraine Headaches Introduction
Headaches are very common; in fact, almost everyone will have a headache at some point. Headaches have been written about since the time of the Babylonians. Migraine headaches are even discussed in the Bible. Some very famous historical figures (for example, Napoleon Bonaparte) suffered from severe headaches. Experts do not agree about what causes headaches, but they agree that more studies are needed. Headaches are hard to study because of the following reasons:
  • People experience pain differently (in other words, a headache one person rates as a 10 on a scale of 10 might be rated as a 5 by another person).
Measuring headache pain in a standard way that accounts for the personal way people feel pain is almost impossible.
Studies are limited to human subjects.
Although headaches might rarely be due to infections or diseases, most are probably the result of an inborn protective mechanism responding to an external environmental stress. Headaches can be divided into 2 broad categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are not caused by problems with a person's internal structure or organs or by bacteria, viruses, or other organisms. Migraine, cluster, tension, and rebound headaches are types of primary headache. Secondary headaches are those caused by an underlying structural or organic disease.

http://www.bme.jhu.edu/labs/chb/disorders/migraine.html
Vestibular migraine
Patients with migraine syndromes may have vertigo as a prominent part of their clinical presentation, and not necessarily with other signs of posterior circulation ischemia. Either pure vertigo (70% ) or dizziness, imbalance, rocking and motion sensitivity (30% ) may be the predominant symptom. Only 5% always had a consistent relationship between the head ache and the vestibular syndrome. In 30% the head aches and vertigo always occurred independently. The duration of vestibular symptoms was usually one of two time frames. In 25% of patients the duration was from minutes to 2 hours, in 50% it was greater than 24 hours and occasionally up to weeks of motion sickness and sensitivity, dizziness and imbalance, often punctuated by spells of vertigo. Diamox and sansert may be of particular help in this syndrome, though conventional migraine treatment (calcium channel blockers, tricyclics) as well as clonazepam or ativan may also be effective.

Migraine
Migraine is a painful headache that is associated with changes in the size of the arteries within and outside of the brain or caused by inherited abnormalities in certain areas of the brain. There is a familial tendency for the development of migraines. They may be triggered by a sudden increase or decrease in stress, weather changes, light exposure and stimulants, including caffeine. Because migraines often produce visual symptoms, many people feel that they are caused by eyestrain or vision problems. Headaches may become worse because of intense and lengthy use of the eyes. However, migraines seldom result from eye disease or the need for eyeglasses. Signs and Symptoms
  • Type of Pain: Pounding or throbbing pain. The headache often begins as a dull ache and develops into throbbing pain. The pain is usually aggravated by physical activity. Severity/Intensity of Pain: The pain of a migraine can be described as mild, moderate, or severe.
